Chris Matthews: If Titanic Sank Today GOP Wouldn’t Support Requiring More Life Rafts on Ships

Chris Matthews said Friday that if the Titanic sank today, Republicans wouldn’t support requiring the shipping lines to have more life rafts and life preservers on their vessels. In an at times heated discussion about energy policy with Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Steve Scalise (R-La.), the “Hardball” host continually bashed the GOP. “The smartest move for your party is to screw things up for the next couple of years, right through November, get the country completely bollixed up, and they will vote Republican out of desperation, and you will have more power,” said Matthews. “Is that the strategy of the Republican Party this year?” When Scalise refuted this claim, Matthews added, “If the Titanic sank today, you know what the Republicans would be saying? Don`t be telling the shipping lines they need more life rafts or life preservers.” Scalise marvelously responded, “If the Titanic sank today, I`m sure the president would try to blame it on George Bush. And we have seen where that has gotten us” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):  CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Here`s Mitch McConnell`s position, which I think is not a position. He said: “What I believe most of my members, if not all of them, will not be interested in is seizing on the oil spill in the Gulf and using that as a rationale, if you will, for passing a national energy tax referred to down here at the White House as cap and trade.” Now, that`s a negative position. What is the positive position in terms of moving forward? And do you support some kind of negotiation with the Democrats, which never seems to get done in this presidency? You guys — McConnell from day one has said you guys` platform is no. That`s your platform. REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ (D), FLORIDA: That`s right. MATTHEWS: That`s what… (CROSSTALK) REP. STEVE SCALISE (R-LA), ENERGY & COMMERCE CMT: Well… MATTHEWS: Is he right? Is McConnell right? The smartest move for your party is to screw things up for the next couple of years, right through November, get the country completely bollixed up, and they will vote Republican out of desperation, and you will have more power? Is that the strategy of the Republican Party this year? Because McConnell says it is. MATTHEWS: What I see here… (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: What do I see? If the Titanic sank today, you know what the Republicans would be saying? Don`t be telling the shipping lines they need more life rafts or life preservers. Don`t get involved with industry telling them what to do. At some point, the government has to intervene, because the private sector is not doing the job. The private sector is what we`re seeing on that live bug every night on television. By the way, Congressman, that`s the work of the private sector without regulation. That`s what it looks like without being taxed heavily. Actually, what we’re seeing in the Gulf of Mexico right now indeed IS the result of an over-regulated industry. If our oil companies were allowed to drill in Alaska AND set up more rigs closer to the coast, they wouldn’t be drilling in mile-deep seas. For some reason folks like Matthews just don’t get that! But I digress:  SCALISE: Well, but the federal government is the regulator, Chris. (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: Your oil patch people have been getting away for centuries without paying taxes. You have had the biggest tax breaks in the world because you have controlled the Ways and Means Committee. You have controlled the Finance Committees and the regulating committees to the point there is no regulation of safety. This is either astonishing stupidity or an out and out lie. The Democrats have controlled both chambers of Congress — and therefore the Ways and Means Committee as well as the Finance Committees – since January 2007! That’s approaching three and a half years. In fact, Democrats have mostly controlled Congress since oil exploration began in this country. As such, any suggestion to the contrary is absurd. Fortunately, Scalise had the best line of the night:  MATTHEWS: You have had your way. So, that works. And we`re seeing it every night on the air. (CROSSTALK) SCALISE: If the Titanic sank today, I`m sure the president would try to blame it on George Bush. And we have seen where that has gotten us. (CROSSTALK) MATTHEWS: Well, that`s not useful. Actually, it’s quite useful — and spot on! Bravo, Congressman! Bravo!

Charlize Theron Talks New ‘Mad Max’ Film, ‘Fury Road’

‘I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron Photo: MTV News Charlize Theron would love to share a few details about her much-hyped role in the upcoming Mad Max film, “Fury Road,” but she’s terrified the filmmakers would punish her for giving up any details. “They would kill me,” she told MTV News, just after receiving the Decade of Hotness honors at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards. “They’re listening to everything I’m saying right now,” she said conspiratorially. “It’s so top-secret they would destroy me.” Theron did, however, express enthusiasm for leading man Tom Hardy and director George Miller. “[Tom’s] amazing,” she said. “I think his work in [2009’s] ‘Bronson’ was incredible.” Theron went on to explain that veteran writer/director Miller being attached to the film was her main reason for signing on to this fourth installment in the “Mad Max” franchise. “I wanted to go and do this because I felt that George Miller — well, he’s a genius — and the idea of doing something that has this mass audience appeal with great actors — that is a dream come true. So I’m super excited about that.” The Academy Award-winning actress likened the production to embarking on an adventure. “It’s obnoxious for actors to say this, but I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.” Also joining Theron and Hardy are castmembers Nicholas Hoult (“Clash of the Titans”), Teresa Palmer (“Bedtime Stories”) and Adelaide Clemens (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”). Production is reportedly scheduled to begin in Australia sometime this August. Mel Gibson , who famously brought the original “Mad” Max Rockatansky to life more than 30 years ago, told MTV News earlier this year that he “can’t wait to see” the new film. “Look, whatever George does, I think George is a genius, and whatever he is going to do with that franchise, he’s got good reason for doing it,” Gibson said. The action star, now in his 50s, said he was glad to have passed on the torch to Hardy: “I can’t take the punishment for that sort of thing.” Are you excited to see “Fury Road” once it opens? Have you seen any of the other “Mad Max” films? Let us know in the comments! For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Did Politico Inadvertently Reveal Too Much Detail About Cynical Democrat Sales Pitch for Amnesty?

Illegal aliens. Eeek! I said the forbidden term. For the past few years the “preferable” but less accurate term to describe that group has been “illegal immigrants.” Even that modified term has been too harsh for advocates of amnesty who prefer the completely inaccurate term, “undocumented workers.” However, in order to cynically sell the public on amnesty, the Democrats are willing to temporarily swallow their pride and use “illegal immigrants” according to a Politico article written by Carrie Budoff Brown who reveals a lot more cynicism on the part of the Democrats than she probably intended: Long pilloried for being soft on illegal immigration, top Democratic officials have concluded there’s only one way they can hope to pass a comprehensive immigration bill: Talk more like Republicans. They’re seizing on the work of top Democratic Party operatives who, after a legislative defeat in 2007, launched a multiyear polling project to craft an enforcement-first, law-and-order, limited-compassion pitch that now defines the party’s approach to the issue. The 12 million people who unlawfully reside the country? Call them “illegal immigrants,” not “undocumented workers,” the pollsters say. I’m sure Ms Brown just wanted to demonstrate how “smart” the Democrats have become on the amnesty issue but in that attempt she has also revealed an incredible level of cynicism on their part. Here is more of Brown revealing how the Democrats are attempting to fool the public through the cynical use of nice sounding words: Strip out the empathy, too. Democrats used to offer immigrants “an earned path to citizenship” so hardworking people trying to support their families could “come out of the shadows.” To voters, that sounded like a gift, the operatives concluded.  Now, Democrats emphasize that it’s “unacceptable” to allow 12 million people to live in America illegally and that the government must “require” them to register and “get right with the law.” That means three things: “Obey our laws, learn our language and pay our taxes” — or face deportation.  Right about now I can almost hear Democrat officials hissing to each other about how Brown was way too upfront in revealing their attempt to sell the amnesty snake oil to the public. And now Brown names names: President Barack Obama uses the buzzwords. So does the congressional leadership. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), author of the Democratic immigration plan, scolds advocates who refer to illegal immigrants as “undocumented workers.”  “Buzzwords.” Which means the folks who use them like Obama and Schumer are also amnesty snake oil salesmen. Thanks for that revelation, Carrie. However even these meaningless snake oil buzzwords are a bit too much for some of the liberals to swallow such as amnesty advocate Frank Sharry: Even then, the poll-tested words and phrases will only go so far if Democrats fail to exert discipline and unify behind the get-tough message. And at this point, not all immigration reform advocates have bought into the rhetorical hard line, which aims squarely at winning the political center. Even Sharry, who spearheaded the effort, declines the advice of pollsters to excise “undocumented workers” from his lexicon, saying it feels too much like it plays into conservative efforts to “dehumanize” immigrants. Of course, what article about the cynical manipulation of emotions via buzzwords would be complete without the input of the logic-denying Democrat advisor, Drew Westen ? “When [voters] hear ‘undocumented worker,’ they hear a liberal euphemism, it sounds to them like liberal code,” said Drew Westen, a political consultant who has helped Sharry hone the message through dial testing. “I am often joking with leaders of progressive organizations and members of Congress, ‘If the language appears fine to you, it is probably best not to use it. You are an activist, and by definition, you are out of the mainstream.’” Have you noticed how Democrats have begun mouthing words in support of border security before amnesty can be considered? All a poll driven act according to Brown’s revelation: …Podesta and Sharry assembled a roster of boldfaced Democratic pollsters — Stan Greenberg, Celinda Lake, Guy Molyneux — to figure out how the party would ever get away from one of the most devastating GOP lines of attack, that a comprehensive immigration plan amounted to “amnesty” for illegals. The results made Greenberg a convert. His surveys of swing districts in 2006 and 2007 concluded that Democrats took a political risk by discussing immigration. Greenberg thought frustration with immigrants would spawn an environment similar to the welfare backlash in the 1990s and that Democrats needed to get tough on border security before talking about citizenship.   But polling that Greenberg, Lake and Molyneux conducted in 2008 proved to Greenberg that Democrats could talk in a way that won over voters. It needed to sound tough and pragmatic, but not overly punitive, the pollsters said. The message beat the amnesty charge in their polling. Got that? The call for border security is just a poll driven act on the part of the Democrats?   More poll driven pretension: The most significant shift in language involves the path to citizenship. Pollsters determined that Democrats sounded as though they wanted to reward illegal immigrants , even though lawmakers almost always laid out that requirements and delays that would precede citizenship. “It comes back to this idea: We give permission; we set the terms; it’s under our control; and if you meet those conditions, you are us, welcome to America,” Westen said of the new frame . The “new frame” i.e. the “new act.”   So thank you, Carrie Budoff Brown, for revealing the incredible level of “fool the public” cynicism on the part of the Democrats on the issue of amnesty. It was probably unintentional on your part to reveal so much but thanks anyway.

Mark Wahlberg Says He’s ‘Focused’ On Bringing ‘Entourage’ To Big Screen

‘In the trailer, you see [Ari, Lloyd] waking up together in Vegas,’ he jokes of possible story lines, at MTV Movie Awards. By Josh Wigler Mark Wahlberg Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images “Entourage” fans have spent seasons following Vincent Chase and his loyal crew as they work to land the young actor big parts in big movies. Now, the real-life actor/producer who helped bring the series to HBO wants to get a movie of his own made. Mark Wahlberg confirmed that a big-screen adaptation of the show is in the works, when we spoke to him on the red carpet at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . “The Other Guys” star said an “Entourage” movie is more than just a possibility — it’s the project he’s most determined to see in theaters. “I am more focused on making that movie than my own films,” Wahlberg told MTV News, exhibiting all the passion of Jeremy Piven’s energetic talent agent, Ari Gold. “I just think we can make a great movie. I think people always wanted [it] and have complained that the episodes are too short — they’ve always wanted more. I think we’re going to do it. We just have to end strong, and this season is, by far, the best season so far.” Over the course of six seasons, “Entourage” has covered a lot of ground: Vinnie has gone from rising star to leading man (with the world’s highest-grossing blockbuster among his credits), only to see the work dry up, going from out-of-work actor and back to emerging star once again. It’s been quite the journey. So what story line could an “Entourage” movie explore? Wahlberg offered up one particularly memorable scene, though it had nothing to do with Vinnie. “In the trailer, you see [Ari and his associate, Lloyd] waking up together in Vegas not knowing what happened,” Wahlberg imagined. “It would be pretty cool!” If that’s not enough to sell you, then “Entourage” probably isn’t your cup of tea. But Wahlberg’s enthusiasm for the project was palpable. He’s already considering making a cameo in the film: “Possibly, yeah. I’ve been on the show so many times, and we’ve got some great cameos coming up this year. It’s getting pretty good.” Do you want to see an “Entourage” movie? Tell us in the comments!
