Becky Hammon Hired by San Antonio Sports as First-Ever Female Assistant Coach

Becky Hammon will retire after 16 years in the WNBA at the end of this season. But she already has her next gig lined up. The six-time All-Star has been hired by the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich. “I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Popovich said in a statement Tuesday. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.” Technically, Hammon is NOT the first female to serve on an NBA coaching staff. Lisa Boyer – now associate head women’s basketball coach at South Carolina – served under John Lucas in Cleveland in 2001-02. However, she did not travel with the team, working with the Cavaliers’ staff as an offshoot of her job as assistant coach for the WNBA’s Cleveland Rockers. “A glorious day for the NBA and an awesome day for women,” said Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. “I’m so proud of Becky, she’s put in the work. The Spurs are not a bells and whistles organization, they didn’t do this for PR. They did it because they believe she is the best person for the job.” Hammon was named one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time in July 2011 and ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (with 5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445). And she has Kobe Bryant’s backing. “Big fan of Becky since she was in college. Very bright basketball mind,” the superstar Tweeted upon learning the news. Celebrities Who Played College Football 1. Selena Gomez and Cara Delevingne  are BFFs these days, and they just spent about a week straight partying in Italy for Selena’s 22nd birthday. Cara’s been known to cause some trouble, but based on photos we’ve seen, the whole trip seemed pretty innocent. After all, who could have a problem with a newly single young woman celebrating her birthday with her new bestie? Justin Bieber, that’s who. Justin and Selena got back together last month and just as everyone suspected, they were broken up again before the tabloids even had time to print the story. Shortly thereafter, Selena began hanging out with Cara, who is bisexual and recently broke up with Michelle Rodriguez . If you’re still blushing from watching yesterday’s first Fifty Shades of Grey trailer , Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson know where you’re coming from. They filmed all of those sexy moments, after all … and it wasn’t easy. Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson on Today In a Today interview that followed the morning show’s PTC-criticized 50 Shades unveiling , the stars dished on the “sexual acrobatics” required. “The reality of it,” said Dornan, is much different. It may look sensual, but “there’s a burly man you don’t know very well three feet from your face … which isn’t how you usually have sex, [not] me, anyway.” Dakota Johnson deadpanned, “I do, a lot.” She kids, but “it’s more about visually what our bodies look like and what we’re doing,” she clarified, “so it’s more of like a dance. Johnny Winter Dies; Legendary Guitarist Was 70

Iconic blues guitarist Johnny Winter died last night at age 70. His body was discovered in a Zurich hotel room, and no cause of death has been reported. A god among guitarists, Winter first hit it big in 1968 when Rolling Stone dubbed him one of the most skilled musicians of his time. In 2003, the magazine listed Winter as number 63 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Though he spent much of his career as a successful solo artist, Johnny is perhaps best known for his collaborations with his younger brother Edgar Winter, as well for his work with blues/rock group Johnny Winter And. The latter group is remembered for the popular 1970 single “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” which later became a Top 40 hit for the band’s guitarist, RIck Derringer: Johnny Winter: Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo Winter struggled with heroin addiction early in his career and recorded the song “Still Alive and Well” to celebrate kicking the habit in 1973. A new Winter album with appearances from Eric Clapton and Ben Harper is slated for release on September 2. Along with Tommy Ramone , Winter is the second 70s rock legend to pass away this week.
