‘I just wanted to go in and paint the picture for the streets,’ the ‘Tony Montana’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Future Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliner : Future Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : True Story Real Spit : The future is hard to predict, but the mixtape scene down South has long been a crystal ball of sorts when it comes to gauging new rap talent. And if his street buzz is any indication, Atlanta representative Future has plenty of bright days ahead. After establishing his sound on the DJ Scream-hosted 1000 and Dirty Sprite tapes and, of course, on the chorus on YC’s infectious “Racks,” Future has returned with his latest mixtape, True Story. “The mixtape True Story, everything on it from the beginning to the end is based on a very true story, and I just wanted to go in and paint the picture for the streets,” the rapper told Mixtape Daily. Raised in the infamous Zone 6 section of Atlanta, Future found musical inspiration in the form of his cousin Rico Wade of the Dungeon Family (Outkast, Goodie Mob). It was Future’s producer cousin who encouraged him to hone his writing abilities and that support ultimately led to the MC putting out local favorites like “Watch This,” “Yeah, Yeah” and the ladies anthem “Stand.” On True Story, Future puts his pen on full display, crafting catchy hooks over dirty southern bounce beats. The results are enjoyable, the subject matter varied. There’s the strip-club inspired “Magic” and the hustler’s ode, “Tony Montana.” On “Long Time Coming,” Future gets nostalgic and writes a letter to a lost love. Waka Flocka Flame and Scooter assist on the lighthearted “Annoying,” and newly signed G-Unit member Shawty Lo helps out on the lost-homey dedication “Bigger Picture.” While True Story chronicles the rapper’s sometimes difficult come-up, it does provide some hope that the days to come for Future will be worth the struggle. Complicated professor takes down Harry’s best friend Ron Weasley for the title of greatest ‘Potter’ character ever. By Eric Ditzian Alan Rickman as Severus Snape Photo: Warner Bros. Sixty-four contestants. Four weeks. More than 7 million votes. And now just one wizard is left standing: Potions master Severus Snape has won MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup ! As announced during our live stream of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York City, Snape bested Ron Weasley to earn the fan-voted title of the greatest character ever in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series. And it wasn’t even close. Coming off an extraordinary two-match run, in which he smacked down Harry Potter himself and then stormed past Hermione Granger, Snape shot out to an early lead over Weasley and never looked back. Poor Ron — who eked out a hard-fought victory in round three over his brother Fred and barely squeaked past wizard Sirius Black — never really had a chance. He may have been the last of the Big Three to stay alive in the Cup, an impressive achievement in its own right, but there was nothing he could do when facing, in Snape, a character on a sizzling winning streak and possessing perhaps the franchise’s most complex, satisfying arc. Snape began the tournament as a dangerous #2 seed in the Privet Drive bracket. He wasted no time absolutely embarrassing Death Eater spawn Vincent Crabbe, walking away with nearly 98 percent of the vote. From there, he wiped the floor with Professor Flitwick and ran over fan favorite Dobby the House Elf. Even Harry Potter himself presented little challenge for Snape, who seemingly could have sleepwalked through his face-off with the boy wizard and still come out on top. That was some seriously impressive stuff. But he didn’t stop there, going on to best Hermione in the Final Four with almost 63 percent of the vote. So let us all applaud Severus Snape for his epic run and staggering victory in the one-and-only “Harry Potter” World Cup. But while we’re at it, we must applaud everyone who voted (and voted and voted and voted) in the tournament. The fan response to the event was far greater than we could have ever hoped. You guys took on the challenge with gusto and dedication — voting and commenting, tweeting and Facebook updating, campaigning and protesting and celebrating. In the end, your favorite character might not have won, but no one can dispute the singular, staggering popularity of “Harry Potter.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . At ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2’ premiere, author says, ‘This feels like a new beginning to me.’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Danielle Genet J. K. Rowling Photo: MTV News After more than a decade onscreen, the “Harry Potter” franchise will end July 15. The cast and crew had a big, sob-inducing farewell Wednesday at the London premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Amidst the sad goodbyes and constant cheering of fans, MTV UK caught up with “Potter” scribe J.K. Rowling to ask about her experiences turning her novels into films. “Hundreds of people have been involved,” Rowling said. “There’s not one of them I don’t think was indispensible and phenomenal. The most talented groups of people you could’ve found, and I just love them. The idea I won’t be able to go down to Leavesden and visit anymore is just sad.” Though Rowling joked several times throughout the night that she would return to “Potter” — “You know what? Maybe I’ll just write another one,” she teased — she also said she has some other projects on the horizon. She was most likely referring to the same one she talked about in February, telling BBC News she was “writing hard.” “I’m writing, and I’ve done quite a lot since finishing ‘Harry,’ ” she said. “I also felt I wanted the last film out of the way before I made any moves on the publishing front. ‘Harry’ is so huge and I suppose my involvement with the world has still been quite intense. This feels like a new beginning to me.” Since being released, the books have sold more than 450 million copies, and the films have grossed about $6.37 billion. Rowling told MTV UK she didn’t start out writing expecting this sort of success, and that’s not the way she measures the success of her books: She measures it by the way it has affected her readers. “Nothing makes me prouder ever than to meet a child or the parent of a child who says he/she never read before ‘Harry Potter,’ ” Rowling said. “Nothing makes me prouder than that.” We’re streaming live from the red carpet at the New York premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” on Monday, July 11, at 4:30 p.m. ET. Despite the epic tears everyone is bound to shed once J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter film series comes to its conclusion this month, the cast was all smiles as they gathered in London for what will probably be the last big cast photo call of the franchise. Sadly, star Daniel Radcliffe was M.I.A. for the bittersweet photo op, but just about every other beloved witch, wizard, and Muggle was on hand to share smiles before tomorrow’s world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 .

Since the recession in 2008, many U.S. churches have seen a decline in giving. But the tide may be changing. The third annual State of the Plate constituency survey of 1,507 churches revealed that 43 percent of these churches experienced an uptick in giving this past year (up from 36 percent the previous year). Overall, 6 in 10 churches reported giving that was flat or up in 2010 — encouraging results given the nation’s stalled economy. Smaller churches (under 249 people in worship attendance) saw giving declines (40 percent in churches under 100 people and 43 percent in churches with 100-249 people). The Pacific Coast states and Southeast states are leading the nation in church giving declines with 46 percent of churches experiencing a decrease in donations this past year. Whether giving increases or decreases in 2011 will depend on a variety of factors, said Matt Branaugh, Director of Editorial for Christianity Today International ‘s (CTI) Church Management Team, a survey co-sponsor. “It’s critical for church leaders to nurture relationships with people and show them how their giving directly helps the church’s mission and their surrounding community,” Branaugh added. Though churches appear to be coming out of a downward cycle, a new government proposal to limit tax deductions on charitable giving is creating concern among church leaders. Ninety-one percent of the State of the Plate respondents expressed concern that such a change could create yet another obstacle to generous giving among churchgoers. “Charities and churches have been hit hard by the economy the past three years. If the government’s plan to change the rules on charitable tax deductions goes through, giving to charities and churches, and the people they in turn assist, will likely be negatively affected,” said Brian Kluth, founder of MAXIMUM Generosity and the State of the Plate research.
