Flaming Lips Enlist Grace Potter, Neon Indian In O Music Awards Record Attempt

Band is aiming to top Jay-Z’s live concert record during the June 27 O Music Awards live stream. By Gil Kaufman The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images It takes a village to topple a record. That seems to be the thinking behind the Flaming Lips ‘ efforts to gather an army of musical cohorts to help them take aim at Jay-Z’s record for the most live concerts in 24 hours. As part of a record attempt that will take place over 24 hours during the June 27 O Music Awards , the Lips will try to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing shows in eight different cities. We can now reveal that they will get some support from an eclectic group of musicians that includes festival favorites Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, modern bluesman Gary Clark Jr., country singer Hunter Hayes, and indie rock acts Givers, New Fumes, Neon Indian, and Grimes. Beginning June 27, the O Music Awards will play out across all of MTV’s screens and linear networks in the form of the world’s first 24-hour award-show live stream via a historic and hectic bus ride through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. Two-time O Music Award nominees and multiple Grammy winners Flaming Lips will board a vintage tour bus named Endeavor and zigzag across the region in an attempt to break the world record currently held by Jay-Z for the most live concerts in 24 hours. More support acts will be named soon, and each will play a full set before making way for the Lips to take the stage for their mini-sets with unique collaborations and special guests. Tickets for the shows go on sale Thursday (June 7) and can be purchased through the individual venues. Partial proceeds from the show will be donated to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation . Also, the entire show will be streamed live on OMusicAwards.com and accessible on all platforms including mobile and tablets. “I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. … But I’ve accepted the job of not driving but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus,” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told MTV News. “I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. … But I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning, well … I’m open to new experiences.” During the 24-hour live stream, 24 awards will be presented to winners. Fans can vote now up until the show via the O Music Awards website in a wide assortment of categories that include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. Nearly 10 million votes have been cast since voting kicked off on May 23. You never know what’s going to happen on the live stream, where the Lips will be constantly “on,” as cameras follow them on the bus, on the stage and everywhere in between. Along the way, the band will meet up with fans and presenters who will dole out awards and, of course, deal with all the pitfalls and unexpected detours that a multi-state road trip entails — flat tires, stops at musical monuments, and perhaps the occasional music-making special guests and hitchhikers. The day before the big show, June 26, the Lips will release a physical version of The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, the previously digital-only album featuring unique collaborations with Yoko Ono, Nick Cave, Bon Iver, Ke$ha and an exclusive new track recorded with Ghostland Observatory’s Aaron Behrens. ‘American Idol’ Finale: Phillip Phillips Crowned Winner

Frontrunner Phillips beats out 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez for the season 11 crown after a ‘world record’ of 132 million votes. By Adam Graham Phillip Phillips performs on the “American Idol” season 11 finale Photo: Getty Images The lights were dimmed, the votes were counted, and Phillip Phillips became the new “American Idol.” As expected, Phillips beat out Jessica Sanchez on Wednesday’s (May 23) Season 11 “Idol” finale, live at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre. Phillips topped Sanchez after a reported 132 million votes were cast — “a new world record,” according to host Ryan Seacrest. Phillips teared up while performing his winning song “Home,” while confetti rained down on the stage around him. The Leesburg, Georgia, native has been a cool cucumber all season long, but he broke down in the moment, just as he did during his hometown visit last week. Phillips didn’t finish the song, but strolled off stage and into the arms of his family, who were waiting in the first few rows. As streamers fell and the band played on the stage behind him, Phillips hugged his family members, and later judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. Phillips came out of Tuesday’s performance episode the heavy favorite to win it all and was celebrated by the judges for his “Home,” which was tailor made for his laid-back style. On the other hand, Sanchez’s would-be winning song, “Change Nothing,” was sloughed off by the judges and even Sanchez herself, who acknowledged the song wasn’t really in her wheelhouse, and said she’d aim to put more of herself in her future recordings. Heading into this season, the buzz was that a woman would win “Idol,” becoming the first female winner since Jordin Sparks in 2007. Four of this year’s top six contestants were female, but Phillips proved unbeatable in the stretch. Sanchez was an early favorite in the season, stepping out in front with her show-stopping rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” on the March 7 episode. But she hit her stumbling blocks along the way, and was voted out on the April 12 episode, and had to be saved by the judges to stay in the competition. Phillips was steady throughout the season. His name — that name! — made him an instant standout, and he played it cool all season long, never letting much of anything — including the season-long illness he battled — ruffle his fathers. (On Thursday’s show, he joked — he was joking, right? — that he got nine and a half to 10 hours of sleep the night before.) He was often criticized, and fairly so, for his similarities to Dave Matthews, but he came alive in the final two weeks, knocking out Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight” and his winning “Idol” song, “Home.” Wednesday’s finale packed the usual array of medleys, group performances and guest appearances. Stars on the roster included Rihanna (who hit the stage to perform “Where Have You Been”), Chaka Kahn (who joined the female finalists on “I’m Every Woman”), Neil Diamond (who did “Sweet Caroline” with the male contestants) and Reba McEntire (who sang “Turn on the Radio” with Skylar Laine). Josha Ledet sang Elton John’s “Take Me to the Pilot” alongside Fantasia Barrino, whom he introduced as “the biggest inspiration in my life” and who hit the stage in a wild, form-fitting catsuit and long hair, while another former “Idol” winner, Jordin Sparks, took the stage with Hollie Cavanagh on “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” John Fogerty teamed up with Phillips on the Creedence Clearwater Revival classics “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and “Bad Moon Rising,” and Jennifer Holliday teamed up with Sanchez on the “Dreamgirls” signature song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” (Earlier, Sanchez hit the stage on her own to reprise her performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”) The “Idol” finalists — minus Phillips and Sanchez, who teamed up on Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ “Up Where We Belong” late in the show — opened the show with Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby,” and the male finalists paid tribute to the late Robin Gibb by running through a handful of Bee Gees classics, including “How Deep is Your Love,” “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and “To Love Somebody.” The “Idol” judges got in on the action as well. Jennifer Lopez performed “Goin’ In” with Flo Rida and Lil Jon and “Follow the Leader” with Puerto Rican duo Wisin & Yandel, while Steven Tyler hit the stage with his Aerosmith cohorts to do their new single “Legendary Child” along with “Walk This Way.” The show also featured “Idol’s” first live wedding proposal, when fifth season finalist Ace Young proposed to third season runner-up Diana DeGarmo while the dramatic “Idol” suspense-building music played in the background. (DeGarmo accepted despite Young’s tacky jewelry store plug mid-proposal.) Phillips and Sanchez were also given new Ford automobiles for their efforts. Next up? After the finalists make the media rounds, the “American Idol” summer tour — featuring the season’s top 10 finalists — kicks off July 6 in Detroit. What did you think of the “Idol” finale? ‘Glee’ Star Darren Criss Wants ‘A Little Drama’ In Season Four

Cast teases the ‘awesomeness’ of next season, in which several characters find their voices outside McKinley High. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi “Glee” Photo: FOX Now that the graduating class of McKinley High has said their big goodbye following Tuesday’s season finale , fans might be wondering what will go down in season four. It seems that much of the cast will be dispersing across the country to pursue lives outside of the New Directions, while others stay behind to finish high school. When MTV News caught up with the cast recently, Lea Michele explained that season four’s “show-within-a-show” format will allow them to expand on the plots already introduced while also allowing new plots to breathe life into the series. “You basically have the kids who have graduated and their story lines, as well as the kids back in high school,” she said. “I think it’ll be really great because it gives us the opportunity for the characters who have been on the show for a while to move on and to start new story lines, but then the kids who are newer on the show will get to continue on.” “I think it’ll add more to the show,” Chris Colfer added, noting that with guest stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson signed on to make cameos, fans should expect a lot of “awesomeness.” So is Michele equally excited by the prospect of chilling with the two fashionable A-listers on set? “They’re the best,” she gushed. “It’s really cool.” Michele and Colfer are hardly the only two characters returning to “Glee.” Show creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that everyone will be back for more. And, Darren Criss notes, it could mean some drama for Blaine and Kurt . “I think people got hung up on the idea that it’s over, which it’s not at all,” he said. “It’s just another departure point. When you graduated high school it’s not the end of the world.” “[Blaine]’s going to be a senior. I’m curious to see where his journey takes him,” Criss added. “Him and Kurt seem to be pretty strong, but Chris [Colfer] and I liked a little drama, so we like things being shook up maybe for more than one episode. So, I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m just happy to be invited to the party.”

Flaming Lips Take Aim At Jay-Z’s Record At O Music Awards

Band will attempt to break Hov’s record for most live concerts in 24 hours at the O Music Awards, set for June 27. By James Montgomery Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images The O Music Awards are back once again. And this time, they’re taking the bus … all day long. Yes, on June 27, the digitally driven event will let someone else take the wheel as they play out aboard a tricked-out tour bus that will travel through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. The trek — from Memphis to New Orleans — will take place over 24 hours, making the O Music Awards the world’s first 24-hour awards-show live stream. Of course, that’s not the only first that’ll take place during the show. In keeping with tradition, the O Music Awards will also see another attempt at a Guinness World Record as the Flaming Lips ride along aboard the bus as the de facto house band and aim to break Jay-Z’s record for the most live concerts in 24 hours by playing gigs in eight different cities. “I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. … But I’ve accepted the job of not driving but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus,” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne said. “I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning, well … I’m open to new experiences.” You can watch Coyne go for greatness on June 27 when the O Music Awards stream live at OMusicAwards.com . That’s also where you can vote for your favorites — including Nicki Minaj, One Direction, Taylor Swift and, uh, MC Hammer — in O Music Award categories like Fan Army FTW, Must-Follow Artist on Twitter, and Too Much Ass for TV, given to the best NSFW video. The full list of nominees can be seen over on the O Music Awards official site . Additional performers and presenters for the June 27 show will be announced in the coming weeks.

Nick Cannon Tried To Set A World Record For Most Hugs Given…Did He Succeed?

Anything to get away from that crazy a$$ wife , huh? Nick Cannon held a fundraiser at Citi Field recently called the “Hug It Out” effort where he attempted to set the world record for hugs given out in an hour. While this may seem like another attempt at shameless attention whoring, it actually collected almost 1,700 toys for the New York Hospital of Queens. Sadly, though, Cannon fell short of Nick Vujicic’s 2010 record of 1,749 hugs by 52. Maybe next time. Until then, here are the most awkward, hilarious pictures you’ll ever see.
