Contagion Viral Marketing Gone Wild: The Bird Flu Is Mutating, For Reals

In Steven Soderbergh ‘s panic-inducing epidemic thriller Contagion , the world is paralyzed by a fast-spreading virus that scientists, including Laurence Fishburne, can’t get a bead on. “Someone doesn’t have to weaponize the bird flu,” he intones in the trailer. “The birds are doing that.” As if Contagion wasn’t already a hypochondriac’s nightmare, a U.N. report this week reveals that the deadly bird flu, or H5N1, has mutated and is spreading overseas.

Little Monsters already know Jo Calderone is Lady Gaga’s later ego. What they didn’t know before last night’s Video Music Awards is that the two were an item! “My name is Jo Calderone,” the 25-year-old said, showing up in drag as part of her wild, extended pre-performance monologue. “Lady Gaga? She left me!” Fully committed to the character for several minutes, smoking a cigarette as he/she addressing the crowd, “Jo” grew more and more animated … Lady Gaga VMA Performance 2011 “[ Lady Gaga ] is f**king crazy!” he/she said. “For example, she gets out of the bed, puts on the heels. She comes out of the bathroom dripping wet and she’s still got the heels on … And what’s with the hair? “At first it was sexy, but now I’m just confused. I think it’s really f**king great that she’s such a star and all … but how am I supposed to shine?” There you go. Finally, Lady Gaga sat down and belted out a soulful rendition of “You and I.” Brian May from Queen came on stage and joined her. What did you think of her performance? Was it great to see Jo Calderone in person like that, or did the gag get old? Certainly original, right?

In addition to winning Best Pop Music Video for “Till the World Ends” at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, Britney Spears was recognized by the event. The singer was given the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award for her life’s influence on music videos, with a two-minute dance tribute performed in her honor. None other than Lady Gaga-Jo Calderone presented the award: Britney Spears VMA Tribute Upon winning Best Pop Music Video, she took the stage and could not help getting a little choked up discussing her family and beau Jason Trawick! “Thank you so much,” Britney Spears gushed. “I wasn’t expecting this!” “First I’d like to thank God, for blessing me so much. And my beautiful family – my two boys, Jayden and Preston, Mommy loves you so much. My management team… And to all my fans! And to Jason … I love you!” Aww. She was pretty emotional. I didn’t know anything about Twitter at the time, but he was following me, thinking it was me. And this person tweeted, ‘Hanging out by my pool! Just chilling on Saturday!’ And David Wain was actually hanging out by my pool, on Saturday, and I wasn’t there. I was in New York or something. And so he was like, ‘Huh, I don’t think you’re Elizabeth Banks.’ And this person broke down, and said, ‘No I’m not Elizabeth Banks. I started this because I’m a fan and now I have all these followers and I don’t know what to do.’ David called me and said, ‘Do you want me to broker the password away from this guy and get your identity back on Twitter?’ And he did!
