Captain Beefheart’s Death Mourned On Twitter

Linda Perry, Penn Jillette, Akron Family and more remember late avant-garde icon. By Mawuse Ziegbe “Captain Beefheart” Don Van Vliet Photo: Michael Putland/Getty Images Avant-garde artist Captain Beefheart was given a heartfelt e-sendoff by several celebrity fans after he died Friday (December 17) at age 69. After news of the passing of Beefheart, who was also known as Don Van Vliet, circled the world, a range of high-profile tweeters took to the social-networking site to type tributes to the late Magic Band leader and music game-changer. Former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman and singer/songwriter Linda Perry wrote , “Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band … RIP January 15 1941 – December 17 2010.” She also included a link to the melancholic doo-wop track “I’m Glad” from the 1967 album Safe as Milk. Comedian and illusionist Penn Jillette tweeted , “Captain Beefheart has died. Another inspiration & hero gone. He’s been painting, no music for a while, but I still listen all the time.” Beefheart was close to childhood friend and fellow artistic original Frank Zappa, whose children shared tender missives via Twitter in the wake of his passing. “Just heard about Captain Beefheart. Sad day indeed,” Diva Zappa tweeted . “R.I.P. Captain Beefheart…sad day,” Zappa’s son Ahmet wrote, before tacking on his favorite memory of the late artist. “Best Captain Beefheart moment. I was on the phone with him a few years ago and he asked me ‘what about a platypus in a briefcase?’ Love!” Since Beefheart’s entry into music and art more than four decades ago, his genre-melding approach has influenced a new generation of folk/pop appreciators and freak-flag wavers, many of whom paid tribute to the star on Twitter. “R.I.P. Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart. We wish you safe passage and return,” indie collective Akron Family tweeted . “RIP DVV, my mum got me into you when i was 15. Lx,” read a message posted on Scottish band Camera Obscura’s Twitter account that included a link to “Call on Me.” Experimental upstart Zola Jesus tweeted about how Beefheart’s music is still making an impact and being shared among young artists, writing, “Gave my brother my old, worn down copy of Trout Mask Replica before I moved as a thank you to introducing me to his music when I was far too young. Nothing he did was a mistake, there were no accidents in his music. Only sheer invention, passion… dear god, why does the world keep losing such important people? Who will fill their shoes? My heart is heavy for you, Don Van Vliet!” Share your memories of Captain Beefheart in the comments. Related Artists Captain Beefheart

Jon Stewart Interviews 9/11 First Responders, Destroys Republican Senators

On his final show of 2010, Jon Stewart turned serious. He turned a segment over to firefighters and police officers who were first on the 9/11 scene, gauging their reaction to the fact that Senator Republicans are holding up a bill that would provide $7.4 billion in health care benefits to first responders who became ill due to their actions at the World Trade Center. Jon Stewart Interviews 9/11 First Responders The filibuster is due to a Republican pledge in September to not consider any legislation before first resolving the pressing topic of extending tax cuts to those making over $250,000. “This is an outrageous abdication of our responsibility to those who were most heroic on 9/11,” Stewart said. “I would like to see one of these Senators have the balls to explain why somehow getting a tax cut extension for wealthy Americans is more important than suffering Ground Zero workers.” Challenge extended, Republicans.

Kanye West Is MTV News’ Man Of The Year

Undeniable music, brilliant tweets and one ambitious short film put ‘Ye back on top in 2010. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: D. Dipasupil/Getty Images He didn’t sell the most albums (that was Eminem ) or have the year’s hottest single (that was Usher ), but at the close of 2010, there really is no other choice for MTV News’ Man of the Year than Kanye West . (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) After all, no one dominated the pop-culture landscape quite like he did. From his self-imposed hiatus to his triumphant return to his tantrums (and, of course, his tweets), everyone was talking about West in 2010. No one completed as compelling a comeback story, and most importantly, no one released an album as searing and soaring as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. And he did it all his way, without compromise or contrition. It truly was 12 months to behold. West came into 2010 as a villain, still stinging from the public smack-down he received following the Taylor Swift debacle , and he leaves it as a hero: not only the year’s most celebrated artist, but its most compelling and visionary too. And if that’s not worthy of an award, well, then we don’t know what is. King Kanye reigns supreme. Here’s a look back at a very memorable year in his life. 2010 Highlights : West’s story actually begins in September 2009, after he stormed the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. His actions were lambasted by everyone from Donald Trump to Jimmy Carter , and as a result, he tearfully told Jay Leno that he needed to “take time off.” And he wasn’t kidding. ‘Ye canceled his much-anticipated Fame Kills Tour with Lady Gaga and all but disappeared from the public eye, leading to rumors that he had checked himself into rehab (or, alternately, fled to India ). He briefly appeared onstage with Beyonc
