Mystical Mt. Fuji is Tourist-Polluted

Image from oldphotosjapan : Mount Fuji in Clear Weather by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) Mt. Fuji in Japan is one of the most famous and iconic mountains in the world; it has been the subject of endless photographs, poems and paintings over the centuries. It is also a spiritual symbol, sacred in the Shinto religion. But it has become a huge site of tourism, growing in popularity yearly. There were 200,000 visitors a decade ago and 430,000 in 2008. With that growth comes garbage, noise, tacky tourist shops, more garbage and a lack of toilet facilities…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Victoria Beckham’s Breasts Are Missed

It’s been about a year or so since I first heard the rumors that Victoria Beckham had decided to have her wonderful fake boobs removed, I didn’t want to believe it at first, but deep down inside I knew it was happening and I’ve been in mourning ever since. I miss those things so much. The sad thing is that she did it to get on the cover of Vogue magazine. Can you believe that? A woman would mutilate her body to get onto a magazine cover. What has the world come to? more pictures of Victoria Beckham here

Building 7 Implosion: The Smoking Gun of 9/11

Shortly after the explosive destruction of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, a third high-rise building was destroyed. It wasn’t hit by an airplane. The characteristic signs of controlled demolition were everywhere. Although it received little media attention at the time, the third-worst structural building failure in modern history occurred on September 11, 2001. World Trade Center (WTC) Building 7 was a 47-story, steel-framed, fire-protected, high-rise office building located about a football field’s length from the WTC North Tower. Unlike its two taller cousins, WTC 7 was never hit by an aircraft, yet it fell to the ground suddenly, displaying the classic signatures of explosive controlled demolition. A careful examination of this evidence shows why more than 1,200 architects and engineers are demanding a new and open investigation into all the crimes of 9/11, starting with this aspect, which is most obviously inconsistent with the official account. The evidence discussed in this article was ignored, mishandled, and/or covered up by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the federal agency last tasked with explaining the unprecedented destruction of the World Trade Center high-rises. The collapse of WTC Building 7 represents one of the worst structural failures in modern history. The official story suggests that fires weakened the structures, resulting in a gravitational collapse. The evidence, obvious to so many researchers but omitted from NIST’s Final Report, supports a very different conclusion – one that points squarely to explosive controlled demolition. If WTC 7 was intentionally brought down, then clearly it becomes a ‘smoking gun” that must be investigated. Who were the terrorists that had access to this highly secure building, occupied in part by the CIA, FBI, Dept of Defense, IRS, SEC, and others, and the technology required to prepare it for demolition? The 1,200 Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth present the scientific forensic data, evidence, and eyewitness and video testimony. We do not speculate as to who might have been responsible or how they have, so far, gotten away with the crime of the century. The destruction of the Twin Towers must be re-evaluated as well in light of the WTC 7 revelation. We therefore call for an unimpeachable investigation with subpoena power into the destruction of all three WTC skyscrapers. We ask you to do your part as a citizen to join us in making it happen. Scientist Watches Glacier Melt Beneath His Feet

Lonnie Thompson, a professor of earth sciences at Ohio State University, led a team of scientists drilling for ice cores atop the Puncak Jaya glacier in Papua, Indonesia. Here, their base camp sits below a massif bearing one of the upper ice fields. text size A A A September 4, 2010 Earlier this summer, a group of scientists spent two weeks in Indonesia atop a glacier called Puncak Jaya, one of the few remaining tropical glaciers in the world. They were taking samples of ice cores to study the impacts of climate change on the glacier. Lonnie Thompson, a professor of earth sciences at Ohio State University, led the team and what he witnessed shocked him: The glacier was literally melting under their feet. Thompson tells NPR's Guy Raz he has conducted 57 expeditions around the world, but this trip was unusual. It was the first one where he experienced rain on the glacier every day. “Rain is probably the most effective way to … cause the ice to melt,” Thompson says. “So this was the first time you could see the surface actually lowering around you.” While Thompson and his team were there drilling cores, he says, they witnessed the glacier drop 12 inches in just two weeks. “If that's representative of the annual ice loss on these glaciers,” he says, “you're looking at losing over seven meters of ice in a year. Unfortunately, that glacier's going to disappear in as little as five years if that rate continues.” Puncak Jaya is one of the few tropical glaciers remaining in the world, and it's especially vulnerable to climate change. This makes it especially important to researchers. “Well, it's located about 4 degrees south of the equator. It's the only glacier on western side of the Pacific warm pool, the warmest waters on earth,” Thompson says. “For looking at the history of El Nino, it's a wonderful location.” Losing the glacier wouldn't have much environmental impact for the local people, Thompson says, but it would have a deep spiritual impact. “For the tribes that live in that area, the glaciers are the head of the skull of the god and the mountains are the arms and the legs,” he says. “If they lose the glaciers then they’re going to lose part of their soul.” The Canary In The Coal Mine Just because the melting of the glacier won't have a devastating impact on Indonesia doesn't mean it should be ignored, Thompson says. Rather, it's like the canary in the coal mine — an indicator of changes in the planet's warming trends. And one that should be seen with boots on. “When we look at what's happening to the ice on the planet, we use satellites. The problem with the satellite or aerial photography is you don't see the vertical thinning that's taking place,” Thompson says. “Consequently there'll come a year in the future that there'll appear to be a glacier but it will disappear the next year because of the thinning from the top down. And to me, that's very sobering.” added by: JanforGore

Cdn and American astronauts want world to start getting ready for asteroids

MONTREAL – Canadian and American astronauts say the world should already be preparing for the big one — the asteroid that could some day strike the Earth causing death and destruction. “You're just sticking your head in the sand if you think the world will live out its entire natural life until the end of our sun and never be hit by another big rock,” Canada's Chris Hadfield said in an interview. “That's just foolishness. That's just ignorance.” The Canadian Space Agency astronaut is the current president of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), which submitted a report to the United Nations outlining a detailed plan to deal with any asteroid threat. “We're rolling the dice that the big one is not coming right away,” Hadfield warned. Hadfield, 51, will get a chance to observe asteroids first-hand during his upcoming six-month mission to the International Space Station. He is due to blast off on his third space trip in late 2012 and will also take charge of the lab for several months, becoming its first Canadian commander. During his first space flight — a visit to the Russian space station Mir in 1995 — Hadfield watched a big rock come bearing down on Earth. It eventually burned up in the atmosphere, but the 18-year space veteran admits the experience sent a shiver up his spine. “If it had been a little higher, it would have come right through us (the space station),” Hadfield said. Former U.S. astronaut Russell (Rusty) Schweickart chaired the ASE international group which issued its 54-page report on the asteroid threat in 2008. The report focuses on detection and deflection and calls for a unified global response. Schweickart told The Canadian Press new telescopes will dramatically increase the rate at which asteroids are discovered within the next 10 to 15 years. “You're going to multiply the 7,000 objects that we have in our catalogue now up to one million objects as we get new telescopes operating,” he said in an interview from Sonoma, Calif. The Space Explorers Association has been working closely with the United Nations and the world body is now holding a series of workshops on ways to prepare for threats from so-called Near Earth Objects (NEOs). The work will culminate in a recommendation to the United Nations General Assembly next year or in 2012. “There is no one in the United States or anywhere in the world who has the specific responsibility of acting and developing the technology . . to deflect an asteroid when we find one that does threaten us,” Schweickart added. The retired Apollo astronaut stresses that any effort to deflect a potentially dangerous asteroid would have to begin 10 to 18 years before the impact is predicted. But he adds the basic technology to deflect a threatening asteroid currently exists. One method involves smashing a spacecraft into the object to change its velocity enough to miss Earth. Schweickart's comments come as Canada gets ready to assume a key role in the search for any menacing NEOs. In March 2011, the Canadian Space Agency hopes to launch NEOSSat, which will be the first space telescope “totally dedicated to keep an eye out for the rest of the world.” NEOSSat (Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite) will scan areas near the sun to pinpoint asteroids which have not yet been detected. The $15 million suitcase-sized-satellite, which will circle about 700 kilometres above the Earth, will look for potentially hazardous asteroids. “What we're looking for is advance warning,” senior project manager Bill Harvey said. “Of course those (asteroids) are the larger ones. . .anything over 50 metres that has a potential for an impact.” A 45-metre-wide space boulder exploded over a wooded area in Siberia in 1908 in what became known as the Tunguska event. About 2,000 square kilometres of trees were flattened in an uninhabited area. The Manicouagan crater in Quebec, which is 65 kilometres in diameter, was caused by an asteroid that slammed into the Earth some 200 million years ago. Harvey says he expects NEOSSat to detect several hundred new asteroids during its first year of operation and “probably up to a thousand.” NEOSSat will conduct scientific studies of asteroids and also monitor the beehive of satellites currently orbiting the Earth to make sure they don't slam into each other. Harvey says astronomers are currently keeping an eye on an asteroid named Apophis after observations in 2004 indicated there was a 2.7 per cent chance it would strike Earth in 2029. Additional observations eliminated the possibility of an impact that year, but Harvey remains cautious because another close encounter with Apophis is expected in 2036. “(If) its orbit gets altered by some event— and that event could be coming in proximity with another body like Venus or Mars — that could change the trajectory,” he said. Schweickart points out that nearly 300 asteroids have some possibility of impacting the Earth in the next 100 years. Scientists recently warned that “1999-RQ36,” an asteroid that is more than 500 metres wide, has a one-in-1,000 chance of striking the planet in 2182. Meantime, U.S. President Barack Obama has asked NASA to develop plans to visit an asteroid and the space agency is already looking at a potential human mission to visit one known as “1999-AO10” by 2025. It's estimated such a mission would take about six months with the astronauts spending about two weeks “riding the asteroid” as it blazes past the Earth. Earlier this year, the Obama administration decided on a flexible path for space exploration which favoured a visit to an asteroid instead of a return to the moon. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/canada/breakingnews/cdn-and-american-astronauts… added by: magyver68

Wyclef Jean Slams Sean Penn, Pras

‘Maybe [Penn] ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,’ ‘Clef sings in concert. By Mawuse Ziegbe Wyclef Jean and Sean Penn Photo: Getty Images Wyclef Jean may not be president but he’s got some high-profile critics. When the singer and musician launched a highly-publicized bid for president of Haiti in August he had a lot of support, but also some very vocal detractors — namely actor and fellow activist Sean Penn and Jean’s former Fugees bandmate Pras. Both stars publicly questioned ‘Clef’s political credentials and at a New York City on Friday, Jean lashed out against the critics. “I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,” Jean sang at Hot 97’s On The Reggae Tip concert , switching up the lyrics to his 2004 song “President.” “I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked 8 bars in the Fugees.” A few weeks after announcing his plans for the presidency, Jean was declared ineligible to run by Haitian electoral officials . Wyclef’s lyrics are the latest swipes in a series of public comments between the musician and Penn and Pras. When Jean spoke about his plans to run for Haiti’s head of state on CNN, Penn, who was also a guest on the show , expressed his concerns about the singer’s motivations for seeking political office. “Right now, I worry that this is a campaign that is more about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people. It’s certainly not one of the youth drafting him. I would be quite sure that this is an influence of corporations here in the United States and private individuals that may well have capitalized on his will to see himself flying around the world,” Penn said. The actor also wrote in a Huffington Post column that despite Jean’s public support for the island nation, the MC wasn’t around during critical moments after Haiti’s devastating January earthquake. “I was there for those six months after the earthquake and so many of us on the ground wondered where he was when that kind of attention was so necessary and absent, and why he was NOT helping to keep this desperate situation in the news,” he wrote. “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.” Pras questioned ‘Clef proposed strategy — or lack thereof — for revitalizing the country after the distaster. “He talks about health care, he talks about education, he talks about infrastructure,” Pras told MTV News last month. “But that’s in any society. That’s right here in America, we need that. But how are you gonna get to that point? There’s a short-term goal that needs to be addressed and there’s a long-term goal. To be honest with you, the short term is probably more important than the long term. And he didn’t even mention the short term.” What do you think about Wyclef Jean’s comments about Sean Penn and Pras? Let us know! Related Artists Wyclef Jean Pras
