Michael Witt’s season-ending injury hits Crusaders’ Super League hopes

• Australian half-back damaged knee ligaments at Harlequins • Crusaders hoping for first appearance in play-offs Crusaders’ bid for a first appearance in the Super League play-offs have been dealt a major blow with news that the half-back Michael Witt is almost certain to miss the rest of the season. The 26-year-old Australian, who has been a revelation in his first season in Super League, damaged knee ligaments in the defeat at Harlequins a fortnight ago and has been told he is unlikely to play again this year. Witt, signed from New Zealand rugby union side Otago in the close season, has kicked 35 goals and scored six tries in his 17 matches. The Wrexham club, whose 44-20 win over Bradford on Sunday took them to within four points of eighth-placed Hull KR, are also without Witt’s half-back partner Jarrod Sammut, who has a fractured cheekbone. The Crusaders coach, Brian Noble, said: “It is a blow. Michael has been one of the top half-backs in Super League this year so we are obviously disappointed to lose him. But I think we have the players to step up to the mark in his place.” Noble is likely to keep Rhys Hanbury and Peter Lupton in the half-backs for Sunday’s trip to Leeds. Hajek, 26, has made just one appearance at Wimbledon, losing in the first round 2007, and is currently ranked 80th. Roger Federer will open his defence of the men’s singles title against Alejandro Falla of Colombia. Falla is ranked 65 in the world and has never progressed beyond the second round at the All England Club. Nadal, Wimbledon champion in 2008 and a three-times finalist, faces Kei Nishikori of Japan in his first-round match. Defending women’s champion and top seed Serena Williams has been drawn against Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal. Larcher de Brito is ranked 148 in the world and failed to progress beyond the second round in her Wimbledon debut last year, though she did earn notoriety for her 109-decibel grunts . British wildcard Laura Robson has been handed a tough opening match against the fourth seed, Jelena Jankovic. The 16-year-old Robson won the 2006 Wimbledon Junior Girls’ Championship at the age of 14 but was knocked out of SW19 in the first round last year. Sadly, African Teams Still Far Short on Talent to Contend in World Cup

Filed under: FIFA World Cup , International , Nigeria PRETORIA, South Africa — A few nights before this historic World Cup kicked off, the master of ceremonies at a gala in the Johannesburg suburb of Midrand honoring the legends of African soccer reminded attendees of how ignominious was Africa’s arrival in the World Cup in 1974. Mwepu Ilunga, a defender for Zaire, which that year became black Africa’s first World Cup entry, ran out of a defensive wall at the sound of the referee’s whistle and booted away the ball that had been placed for a Brazil free-kick. A video of the incident played on a video screen in the banquet hall and the MC announced Ilunga was in the room and would come to the stage and for the first time explain what all the years since stayed unexplained. “Ilunga?” the MC called several times. “Ilunga?” Ilunga was a no show, or early departee, which was the one thing the room full of African soccer stars from yesteryear, and those who came to see them that night, hoped would not be true of African teams with the first arrival of the World Cup on their continent. It will, unfortunately, be a struggle.

Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart: When in Rome…

Life is tough for Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart. These two stars are stuck looking gorgeous, making millions and traveling the world together to promote Eclipse . A couple weeks ago, they touched down in Australia . Last night, they posed for photos and met reporters and fans in Rome. Both Kristen and Taylor look good, but we do have one complaint: the latter should never be allowed to wear a shirt in public. He looks handsome and all below, but come on. Nothing can compare to this ! [Photos: Splash News]
