Penny Marshall Looks Back On Life — And The Movies — In Memoir ‘My Mother Was Nuts’

In her new memoir My Mother Was Nuts , actress-comedienne-filmmaker Penny Marshall writes of her remarkable life: Growing up the youngest of three in The Bronx, she had a daughter followed brother Garry into showbiz, got famous as one-half of Laverne & Shirley , got married twice, got divorced twice, opened her home to friends like John Belushi, Carrie Fisher, Steven Spielberg, and Robert De Niro, and became the first female director to break the $100 million mark with 1988’s Big , also notching films like Awakenings , A League Of Their Own , Renaissance Man , and The Preacher’s Wife along the way. Ringing Movieline to discuss her baldly honest, often hilarious memoir — which also reveals darker times, recreational drug use, an abortion, an on-set miscarriage — Marshall explained why she set out to write her life story to begin with: “You want to set the record straight on certain things, because there are so many rumors.” Among them: Her dramatic backstage relationship with Laverne & Shirley co-star Cindy Williams and her recent lung cancer and brain tumor diagnosis. “The rags still say ‘She’s dying,'” she laughed, emphasizing that her health has improved and she’s ready for the next project. “But I dodged a major bullet.” You’ve really lived such a fantastic life. I’ve really been very lucky and fortunate. And I appreciate that! There comes a time when you give back, you know, so I do a lot of that stuff when I can. Why was now the right time to write your memoirs? Well, my brother just finished his second book, and so I figured well, since the rags have me dying every couple of months… [Laughs] That’s not helping me get work! Someone suggested it, and my friend Carrie Fisher’s a writer, so I went, well, I’ll try it. Did you take to it naturally? No. I did a lot of stream of consciousness, but I talked into a tape recorder — and it’s hard to understand me, I understand that. I do go off on tangents sometime. But I talked into a tape recorder then had it transcribed. I have a terrible memory when it comes to recalling my childhood, but you have such vivid memories of your experience growing up in The Bronx, in what seemed like a very special neighborhood that turned out so many talented people . It was a very working class neighborhood. Everyone worked; my mother was the only woman who worked. Mostly the dads worked, but my mother was a tap dancing teacher. It was a very colorful neighborhood, and it had a good work ethic for some reason — or maybe everyone wanted to get out of there! One or the other. There was so much of a sense of community, of family, throughout your life — family related by blood, a familial network of friends. It feels so special and rare, the group of people you surrounded yourself with. Well there’s more to life than show business, you know? Family and friends are part of your life, and sometimes life takes a priority over a job, or a business. And so those that you remain friends with, I think it’s important to fulfill your life. I don’t think just doing a movie fulfills your entire life — it’s important to have people around you that you like, you enjoy, you can do things with. Looking at your career, it’s so interesting to see how directing kind of just fell into your lap. You had such success in front of the camera, and all of a sudden comes a directing career. And you first learned from Spielberg, of all people! Well he was always encouraging. He’d come over to the house and see me doing jigsaw puzzles, which I had an addiction to, and he’d say, “That’s editing.” And then he’d see me talk to all these neurotic guys. He’d say [whispering] “That’s directing.” You have to hold their hand, and tell them what to do. I never said I wanted to direct; I had done a couple of Laverne & Shirley ’s but everyone did. Cindy [Williams] did! Michael McKean! The script girl! Anyone around! Who wants to direct this week? You bore witness to so many changes in the industry, on both sides of the camera, over your career. The way television works now compared to how it was made back in the Laverne & Shirley days… there was so much more freedom and looseness then. Well remember, there were only three channels! Now there are so many channels and so many reality shows that I don’t really watch, because they’re cheap. I don’t mind if there’s a game or a contest; I don’t mind American Idol . I don’t mind The Amazing Race . There’s a contest involved! But just people blabbing and fighting with each other… although Mob Wives did get me. They made me laugh. But that’s what they do. There are 20 people sitting watching monitors. Why don’t you watch the actors, they’re there! I watch the actors. I use a monitor to fill out a screen, but I’m watching the actor — and I have a strange memory. I’m in a wedding scene, I say “That lady was up here, she can’t be back there.” I have this strange memory, I remember what we shot. Before we hit the clacker, the slate, he said something — we could use it. But times have changed. The economy stinks, the whole world’s gone mad, so it’s a little difficult as far as it was simpler back then. I mean, the writers worked their butts off but any actors, you always wanted better, you know? And I don’t know what they do now. They all watch a monitor. You’re pretty honest about the role that nepotism played in your career, getting you in the door through your brother Garry. But you also talk about the idea of “giving someone a life” — paying it forward, giving someone new an opportunity to do with what they can. Do you feel like that sentiment still exists in Hollywood today? No. [Laughs] Everyone needs a life right now! But I think it’s important to give back, to give someone a life. I help take care of this kid, Germain, who’s in a wheelchair. He calls me Mommy Penny, because his mother was not so good. She moved while he was in the hospital because she wouldn’t take care of him. But he’s going to college. He got an apartment. I got him an air conditioner. May I ask how your health is these days? My health is fine, not good. I dodged a big bullet, even though the rags still say “She’s dying” and they have the wrong thing wrong with me. But I dodged a major bullet. And I’m the only one who gained 60 lbs. and got hard nails from it! You’re fortified! A strange constitution, I have. Maybe because I went through everything. [Laughs] You really have. And you’re so open in your book about them all: Marriages, divorces, abortion, miscarriage, illness. Yet your spirit seems to be so buoyant throughout. Whenever anything terrible happens, I stay very calm. I’m a Libra, what can I tell ya? [Laughs] It has to balance out. But if someone’s going crazy, I’m very calm. Or if I’m sick, I’m calm. Nothing hurt me [when first diagnosed with cancer]. I had no idea what they were talking about. So I ordered White Castle.

Rebecca Black to Release Videos Until the Day She Dies

For Rebecca Black, it will always be ” Friday .” The 15-year old tells Billboard Magazine that she has no plans on slowing down her music career any time soon. In fact, she’s nearly finished recording her debut album, a CD whose influences include Rihanna and The Black Keys. Will any of those artists be collaborating with Black? No, says the artist: “Since it’s my first album, we’re really just starting off and getting the base but maybe next time.” And, yes, Rebecca plans for there to be a next time. And a time after that. And a time after that. Asked if fans can expect more videos in the future, Black didn’t hesitate, replying: “For sure. Until the day I die. Until the day I die.” Fortunately, death threats against the singer have passed. So let’s all hope that day doesn’t arrive any time soon. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kendall and Kylie Jenner Cover Seventeen, Talk Potential Spin-Off

No. Please, God and Mayans who predicted our demise before this calendar year is over, just… no. In an interview with the September issue of Seventeen , Kendall and Kylie Jenner make it very clear: they want their own reality TV show. “We go on a lot of adventures!” Kendall says of what the spin-off would depict. “We do crazy stuff. We will kidnap one of our friends or get a group together and go to Disneyland for the night.” Sure. Whatever the writers come up with, basically. E!, of course, has also spun-off Khloe Kardashian and husband Lamar Odom. Kourtney Kardashian has taken both Miami and New York City and, let’s face it, is there any doubt a Kim Kardashian and Kanye West series is on the way? The sisters are writing a science-fiction novel together and compare themselves to their older, more successful, frequently naked siblings. “Kim and Kourtney were the same way,” Kendall, 16, said of working with Kylie, 14. “They were fighting constantly when they were our age, and then there was a point where they flipped and loved each other and they were best friends.” Dare we ask: Would you watch a Kendall and Kylie reality show?

Will You Be Watching? Lauren London Set To Replace Tia Mowry On The Game

Looks like the folks over at The Game aren’t wasting any time trying to fill the openings left by Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall’s departure. The “ATL” star, Lauren London will be joining the cast of the BET sitcom for its sixth season. The 27-year-old, whose previous TV credits include 90210 and Entourage, is penned to play the role of Keira, a 20-year-old former child star who is currently appearing on a Cosby Show-esque sitcom. According to TV Line, the show’s producers are also on the lookout for a male lead to play an educated, all-star running back to act opposite Lauren. The Game has just concluded it’s fifth season, with Pooch’s character deciding to get a fresh start by joining Tia’s character in Washington D.C. The show will return next year with regulars Wendy Raquel Robinson, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez, Brandy Norwood and Barry A. Floyd. A new set of characters may be just the thing the writers need to breathe new life into the stale show. It would have been nice for them to introduce the new characters before getting rid of Derwin and Melanie, but maybe they’ll do guest spots to help phase out their storyline. Do you think Lauren will be a good addition to the show? Will you be tuning in? Source

Sacha Baron Cohen Built His ‘Dictator’ From ‘The Ground Up’

‘He’s been to comedy what Marlon Brando was to acting,’ director Larry Charles tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan Sacha Baron Cohen in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount Pictures For each of Sacha Baron Cohen’s onscreen conquests, one man has been there every step of the way. Larry Charles made a name for himself as supervising producer and occasional writer for “Seinfeld,” but his work directing Baron Cohen’s films brought him a new kind of recognition. Baron Cohen asked Charles once again to helm his film with “The Dictator,” and MTV News spoke with the director in the lead-up to the film’s release. One of the biggest challenges posed by their new film was the creation of an entirely new character. Unlike Baron Cohen’s previous films, which came out of his work on “Da Ali G Show,” the writers of “The Dictator” created the concept for General Aladeen with the comedian in mind. This meant that Baron Cohen had to work through the specifics of Aladeen to make him as fully realized. “Unlike the other movies, where Sacha had a character that he had been working on for years and years and years and was to hone, he knew how this character walked and talked and reacted to every situation when it came to Bruno or Borat or Ali G, but this is a brand-new character,” Charles said. “He had to create this character from the ground up, from the accent to the look to the body language. We needed to give him as much time as possible to evolve that character to where he was ready for the camera.” Additionally, “The Dictator” did away with Baron Cohen’s old format of real-life people interacting with the character. The more traditional structure allowed Charles to get additional takes with Baron Cohen for the first time. “I had never had a second take with Sacha in any of the movies,” he said. “We would do one take. Now that one take may last eight hours for some of the scenes we did in ‘Borat’ or ‘Bruno.’ Eight straight hours of him having to do a character. Eight straight hours of filming it. Here we didn’t have to do that.” Considering that some of the “Borat” and “Bruno” interviews resulted in lawsuits and physical threats, Charles said the “Dictator” set was indeed much safer, but that security came at a price. “It’s certainly physically safer, no question about it,” Charles said. “To be in the United States with a full crew and security and have some kind of permission to be there and not encounter the hostility that we have encountered all over the world and here. At the same time, the danger here is complacency.” The real reason Charles has been willing to work with Baron Cohen repeatedly is that he genuinely believes him to be a comedic genius. “I really classify him in that rare company of comic geniuses. I think there have been a handful of them in film and television history,” Charles said. “He has changed the face of comedy like few other people have. He’s been to comedy what Marlon Brando was to acting. Comedy will be different after him. You can’t go back to some of the old-fashioned ways after you’ve seen Sacha do his thing at his best.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dictator.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

R.I.P. Maurice Sendak, Legendary Children’s Book Author Of “Where The Wild Things Are” Dead At 83

May he rest peacefully in the great library in the sky! Where The Wild Things Are Author Maurice Sendak Dead At 83 Maurice Sendak, author of the beloved children’s book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” has died. He was 83. Sendak’s longtime editor told the New York Times that Sendak died of complications from a stroke. The Brooklyn-born author had already written seven children’s books when, in 1963, Harper & Row published ”Where the Wild Things Are.” Sendak wrote and illustrated the unconventional story about an unruly boy named Max dressed in a wolf suit who, sent to his room by his mother as punishment for misbehaving, travels to a land of monsters and proves himself the wildest thing of all. Initially met with mixed reviews, the story quickly gained popularity and, in 1964, was awarded the Caldecott Medal, the country’s highest honor for children’s literature. Sendak is credited with injecting children’s literature with depth and psychological meaning, and his art was hailed for both its edginess and whimsy. ”Where the Wild Things Are” in particular inspired not only other writers, but also musicians and artists. An animated adaptation was created in 1973, and it was the subject of a hit film by director Spike Jonze in 2009. President Obama and his family read from ”Where the Wild Things Are” at this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. Sendak wrote more than a dozen books in all and illustrated many more. His most recent, the picture book ”Bumble-Ardy,” was published in September. Congress and then-President Clinton presented Sendak with the National Medal of Arts in 1996. Sendak lived with his partner, Eugene Glenn, for 50 years until Glenn’s death in 2007. Sendak most recently lived in Danbury, Conn. This is truly sad news. Lindsay Lohan Nabs ‘Glee’ Role

One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ rumored for Fox comedy, which will also feature Whoopi Goldberg. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: FilmMagic Lindsay Lohan is confirmed to make an appearance on “Glee.” The announcement comes in a wave of casting news for the hit Fox comedy, which includes a spot for comedian and talk-show host Whoopi Goldberg. A rep for Lohan confirmed the casting to E! News . In a May episode of the show, Lohan is rumored to be onboard to play herself as a judge at Nationals. Lindsay’s mother, Dina, once took issue with the show for poking fun at her after the show included a scene in which Katie Couric informed Jane Lynch’s character, Sue Sylvester, that she beat out Dina and her dog Sparky to make the list of the “world’s biggest losers.” Dina had said, “It’s a shame as the dance numbers are amazing, but the writers need to be nice and more creative as opposed to being hurtful.” Lohan has recently been making strides to get back into the acting spotlight. She hosted “Saturday Night Live” this season and is in talks to play the late Elizabeth Taylor in a small-screen biopic. As for Goldberg, she’ll be in three episodes in May, playing a New York Academy of the Dramatic Arts professor (Carmen Tibideaux) who travels to Ohio to meet with Kurt and Rachel about possible acceptance into the school. In other “Glee” news, rumor has it One Direction might be following in the Wanted’s footsteps , getting covered on the show. Matthew Morrison reportedly told the Sun that the cast will be covering the boy band’s single, “What Makes You Beautiful.” “I’ve just heard of them, they’re really taking over the States,” Morrison said. “We are covering one of their songs on ‘Glee’: ‘What Makes You Beautiful.’ I need to YouTube it to practice.” A rep for the band hadn’t responded to MTV News’ request for confirmation by press time. Donald Trump on Rosie O’Donnell Sucking: I Called It!

Donald Trump is not surprised, or sad, to say the least, about Rosie O’Donnell’s recent misfortunes. He says he’s known what a failure she is since the get-go. If you missed it, Oprah cancelled Rosie’s show last week – amid reports of chaos on what staffers called “hellish” set – to her former adversary’s delight. Trump went on Twitter this morning and wrote, “Rosie O’Donnell has failed again . Her ratings were abysmal and Oprah cancelled her on Friday night.” “When will media executives learn that Rosie just hasn’t got it.” Trump has been bashing Rosie for years, claiming the former co-host on The View was a “pig” and a “loser” after she called him a “snake-oil salesman.” In the case of OWN canning her, Rosie felt the writers, producers, stage managers and directors were all inept … and that didn’t sit well with the brass. The brass being Oprah, who hired all those people. Her attitude was the final straw. One word several high level staffers used to describe R.O. is “bully,” something the network ultimately had enough of. Burning question: What’s more offensive: Donald Trump Jr.’s hunting photos , or that gargoyle Rosie O’Donnell’s mere presence in any situation? [Photos: WENN.com]

‘Walking Dead’ Producers Preview Season Three

‘You haven’t seen anything yet,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News about show’s future. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kara Warner Andrew Lincoln in “The Walking Dead” Photo: AMC “We’re all infected,” former cop Rick Grimes told his fellow group of survivors in the “Walking Dead” season finale — and boy, is that an understatement. In an action-packed episode that killed off multiple characters in brutal fashion, left the divisive farm completely in ruins, introduced a fan-favorite sword-wielding wanderer and teased the promise of a prison to come, it’s safe to say that the “Walking Dead” season two finale left fans feverish for more. The AMC zombie series, which returns for its third season in October, answered long-term mythological questions (The content of the CDC’s Dr. Jenner’s whisper? No longer a secret!) and pushed the characters into new places, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly for fans of the comic books, “The Walking Dead” has left the farm behind, with the prison very much in the near future. Between that change of scenery and the introduction of iconic character Michonne (with chained zombies in tow no less), season three is shaping up to be the best of the lot — a notion that executive producers Glen Mazzara and Robert Kirkman certainly agree with, of course. “When I think of ‘The Walking Dead’ book, I think about the prison. I think about the Governor. I think about Rick. I think about Michonne. That, to me, is the heart of that story,” Mazzara told MTV News about the future of the survival horror series. “That’s what I’m excited about writing and seeing come to life. I think that this has been a great chapter one. But now we’re moving into our best material. I’m really excited to see what the actors, the writers and the directors can do with that material.” Kirkman, who created the comic books upon which the TV show is based, is equally excited, if not more so, to revisit “the best material” of the original “Walking Dead” story. “When the camera rises over the trees and the prison comes into view, I did get a little choked up,” Kirkman confessed. “It’s a really cool, very bold promise to the audience. To show that and to say, just wait until you see what we’re going to do with season three. I’m intimately involved with this show. So knowing what we’ve already discussed and knowing the different things that we want to do, I can say that we are at the very beginning of this show. We haven’t quite gotten to a lot of the big things we’ve been building to just yet. If you’re a big fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ and you enjoyed season one and season two, then you haven’t seen anything yet.” “We’re just getting started,” Mazzara agreed. After the season two finale, we’re inclined to agree. What did you think of the “Walking Dead” season finale? Are you looking forward to what comes next in season three? Tell us what you think in the comments section! Related Photos Zombies Take Over New Jersey In Annual ‘Zombie Walk’
