Will ‘Avatar’ Sequels Shoot Back-To-Back? James Cameron Weighs In

Director also talks about getting ‘inside the characters’ heads’ for his ‘Avatar’ novel. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Cameron Photo: MTV News It’s not enough that “Avatar” is now the biggest movie of all time, winning three Oscars and grossing unprecedented box-office dollars . To better serve the film-going public, the powers that be at Fox will be re-releasing the film in 3-D and 3-D IMAX on August 27. MTV News was lucky enough to steal a few moments of maestro James Cameron’s time to talk about the reported “Avatar” novel and whether he’ll shoot the proposed two sequels back-to-back. “We’re still working on deals [for ‘Avatar 2′],” Cameron told MTV News. “We don’t start the movie until we get the deals worked out.” Fair enough. But what about the rumored sequel “scriptment”? “I’m making notes. I’m not sitting idle,” Cameron said. “But really, what I’m working on primarily is the novel. I never had a chance to get the novel done while we were making the movie, and I always intended to. I didn’t want to do a cheesy novelization, where some hack comes in and kind of makes sh– up. I wanted to do something that was a legitimate novel that was inside the characters’ heads and didn’t have the wrong culture stuff, the wrong language stuff, all that.” Cameron went on to say that the novel will serve as a “bible” for other writers to come in and riff on for their own “Avatar”-based stories. “I don’t mind opening the universe, but I just don’t want that to happen until I’ve got more meat on the bones,” he said, adding that he’d like to fill in some of the specific details about the company, what’s happening on Earth and Grace and Jake’s backstories. “That all needs to be filled in before other writers can come in and run with it.” Regarding his plans and discussions about two proposed sequels, we asked if he’ll shoot them back-to-back. “We’re actually talking about that. That’s not a decision yet,” Cameron revealed. “That is something that makes a lot of sense, given the nature of these productions, because we can bank all the [motion] capture and then go back and do cameras over a period of time.” He added that the nature of their filmmaking process lends itself more naturally to a back-to-back shooting schedule, versus that of other live-action productions. “The way these back-to-back productions fall apart is that you’re trying to do two live-action films back to back, and you’re working on it for a year and a half, shooting. Everyone is dead. It’s not humanly possible,” Cameron said of live-action shoots. “This type of film, it absolutely would work.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List Reality Check: ‘Kathy Goes to Washington’

Kathy Griffin’s trip to Washington on last night’s My Life on the D-List , where she accepted an award from the Human Rights Campaign and kicked off an anti-“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” rally at the National Mall, was an event concocted through bossy strong-arming disguised as D-List busking. It was real and fake at the wrong times, and with the wrong punchlines.

Toy soldiers run afoul of school’s weapons ban

Christan Morales says her son just wanted to honor American troops when he wore a hat to school decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures. But the hat ran afoul of the district's no-weapons policy because the toy soldiers were carrying tiny weapons. “His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate because it had guns,” Morales said. Morales' 8-year-old son, David, was assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would met their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat. Earlier this week, the Tiogue School in Coventry sent the cap home with David at the end of the day after concluding it violated a zero-tolerance policy for weapons. The principal told the family that the hat would be fine if David replaced the Army men holding weapons with ones that didn't have any, according to Superintendent Kenneth R. Di Pietro. Morales said the family had only one Army figure without a weapon (he was carrying binoculars), so David wore a plain baseball cap on the day of the visit. “Nothing was being done to limit patriotism, creativity, other than find an alternative to a weapon,” Di Pietro said. The district does not allow images of weapons or drugs on clothing. For example, a student would not be permitted to wear a shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it, the superintendent said. The principal “wasn't denying the patriotism,” he said. “That just is the wrong and unfair image of one of our finest principals.” Morales said her son was inspired to honor the military after striking up a friendship last summer with a neighbor in the Army. Banning the hat “sent the wrong message to the kids, because it wasn't in any way to cause any harm to anyone,” she said. “You're talking about Army men. This wasn't about guns.” http://www.optimum.net/News/AP/Article?fmId=5128267 added by: Stoneyroad

CURRENT MUSIC INTERVENTION

It's come to my attention, and yours if you have eyes, that Current's music section has somehow been reduced to UTTER TRASH! Enough is Enough! IT. ENDS. NOW! No more posting crap in the wrong section! No more posting irrelevant gossip crap irrelevant to music! No more posting of mainstream rap news or other mainstream crap!!! No more posting crap in the wrong section: the music section! If you have art, or something that's really, really important to say — just post it in the appropriate relevant sections and you'll be fine. Please do not dirty the music section, please! It's hard to navigate through to find genuine music oriented articles. The spirit of Current's Music section used to be about promoting indie artists! And people you've never heard of before, thus opening you up to new worlds and awesomeness – things you've never experienced before. I learned about Andrew Bird, Lykke Li, Santigold, and other great ARTISTS, true artists, from Current. But now that's gone as it is now filled with stupid gossip, misplaced articles, news pertaining to mainstream rap – which we all know is TRASH! Just trash. IN CONCLUSION: That's why I demand this end and we all work together to make the music section better. THAT'S ALL I'M ASKING. Simple. If you know of any indie artists or heard anything cool and actually great and listen-worthy (e.g ABSOLUTELY NOT Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, or— whatever! YOU KNOW BETTER!!!, YOU KNOW BETTER) please share and post articles relevant to music and the underground scenes. I sure am doing my part by posting artists to introduce everyone to new sounds, to make their life better – cuz that's what music's for, man! To make our lives better. To comfort us when we feel bad, to grooovve on and relax or depending on the beats per minute to frackin let loose and party and just act like a dancing fool! So please do your part. Post good music. Down erroneous articles. Confuscious said “Life without music is a mistake”. I truly believe that! added by: Aether_Vitae

Diddy On Lil’ Kim/ Nicki Minaj Flap: ‘It Ain’t No Beef’

‘I love Lil’ Kim,’ the mogul tells the BBC, adding, ‘Nicki never did anything to her. ‘ By Mawuse Ziegbe Diddy Photo: Getty Images Lil’ Kim may not be feeling Diddy or Nicki Minaj , who Diddy is rumored to be managing, but the rapper and hip-hop exec says he’s still cool with the Queen Bee. Kim’s recent outbursts about the Young Money Barbie and the Bad Boy mogul have been grabbing headlines, but Diddy isn’t letting the star’s words get to him, saying he still has mad love for Kim. “I want to say I love Lil’ Kim, man,” Diddy told the BBC’s Tim Westwood on Friday (June 11). “I’m sorry that she’s mad. I never would have thought that by me working with another artist that she would take it the wrong way. But if she’s taking it the wrong way it ain’t meant like that. Nicki never did anything to her.” Kim has sounded off about Minaj in a variety of outlets, including a recent interview posted on ThisIs50.com . “For the last year, she’s been subliminally taking shots at me, subliminally taking shots at the other girls in the industry. I mean, come on, we read that interview where she said, ‘Oh, being that the other rap chicks in the game ain’t got sh– to do right now, when I’m by the pool, they can feed me grapes,’ I remember that sh–,” Kim told the website. “The last thing she did that was very subliminal, ‘Oh, did I kill the Queen?’ and Puffy is sitting right next to her vibing with that bullsh–. Come on, we ain’t stupid. It’s obvious that she likes my music and that she’s trying to mimic what I’m doing, she’s subliminally busting shots.” Kim also talked about her feelings to Philadelphia radio personality Kendra G . “All females that come in the game, we all need to stick together, and I always try my best to embrace them. But what happens is when you come into the game and realize that I’m not going away and my fans are still here and they can’t just step over me. They can’t just step on me and then they’re kinda like, they get upset and then they don’t want to be my friend anymore and I think that’s really childish, you know what I’m saying? It’s stupid because all I ask for is to be respected — pay homage at the end of the day.” While Diddy maintained his love and respect for Kim, he went on to defend Minaj, insisting that the Queens hitmaker has shown the Queen Bee nothing but respect. “She ain’t trying to swagger-jack or say nothing negative about her. I just think that Kim needs to just understand that Nicki as a whole has always been respectful of her and Nicki’s not trying to be her,” Diddy said. “I ain’t gonna make no apologies for working with Nicki Minaj. [She is] somebody that’s never said anything negative about Kim and just really has always, in my eyes, has paid homage to Kim. She’s a different MC. They don’t even talk about the same thing. If you’re like a connoisseur of MCs and you a specialist — like what Kim has talked about and what Nicki talks about — they don’t talk about the same things.” The mogul also suggested that Kim’s vocal attacks on the “Massive Attack” rapper are a ploy to build buzz as she prepares to drop a new project. “Kim is gonna be a MC and MCs when they coming back out a lot of times they like to talk crazy and do what they do, ” he said. “At the end of the day, everybody respects Lil’ Kim for being the Queen Bee.” Diddy may be cooking up some heat in the lab with Nicki Minaj, but despite their budding professional relationship, the hip-hop Bad Boy continues to maintain his support for both MCs. “We riding with Nicki and we still riding with Kim,” he said. “We love and respect the days and the history that we’ve had with Lil’ Kim. It ain’t no beef.” Related Artists Diddy Lil’ Kim Nicki Minaj
