Willem Dafoe Joins Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac; Nicole Kidman Heads Out

Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe played a crazily estranged couple in Lars von Trier ‘s erotic/thriller/surreal Antichrist in 2009. And now, Dafoe is set to return to Von Trier’s latest, Nymphomaniac along with Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf , Christian Slater , Stellan Skarsgard and Uma Thurman . Others are joining the cast, while one big name has pulled out. Nicole Kidman had been rumored as another possible addition to the cast, but she has more regal obligations and cannot join, according to THR. Kidman, who played the lead role in von Trier’s Dogville is currently busy playing Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco . Dafoe, meanwhile, will play a supporting role in the two-part erotic Nymphomaniac , which will be released in both a hardcore and soft core version. Dafoe is currently in Hamburg, starring in Anton Corbijn’s drama A Most Wanted Man . Von Trier veteran Udo Kier, who has taken part in a number of von Trier’s films including his most recent Melancholia has also joined the cast along with French actor Jean-Marc Barr ( Dogville ), Caroline Goodall ( Schindler’s List ), Kate Ashfield ( Shaun of the Dead ), Saskia Reeves ( Butterfly Kiss ) and Danish actor Omar Shargawi ( R ). In the film, Gainsbourg stars as Jo, a self-described nymphomaniac who reveals her story to an older bachelor played by Stellan Skarsgard. Rumors have flown over the summer whether named actors would take part in sexually explicit scenes, though porn-star “stand-ins” have also been rumored to be engaged on camera. Shia LaBeouf fueled the rumor when he said he was ready to “go all the way” in Nymphomaniac . [ Source: THR ]

RZA is feeling good about his directorial debut, The Man with the Iron Fists . In this Behind-the-scenes featurette, the Wu-Tang Clan leader says he didn’t think he could top his musical work with the hip-hop group (or as a solo artist), which, he explains, led “to some of the greatest climaxes of my life.”   Okay! But after teaming up with “my boy Quentin Tarantino” and Hostel director Eli Roth to ” make a fat joint of my own,” RZA proudly proclaims “I have topped it.”  Related Story: Check out Movieline’s gallery of more than 20 images from The Man with the Iron Fists . The 43-year-old first-time filmmaker explains that  The Man with the Iron Fists is the result of a fascination with kung-fu movies that began when he was 11 years old, and it sounds like he’s got a lot more ideas where this movie came from. He also explains that the movie’s soundtrack of hip hop and classic soul is meant to be integral to moviegoers’ enjoyment of the picture. You can just sit back, smoke one — if you smoke — and let the music flow. Here’s a preview of what to expect below. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Is Eli Roth Co-Directing RZA’s Kung Fu Epic?

An air of mystery (and, understandably, confusion) has surrounded the awesome-in-theory directorial debut of Wu-Tang Clan rapper-turned-actor RZA, who began filming his period kung fu epic The Man with the Iron Fists last month in China. With the plot largely under wraps — it involves a weapons-forging blacksmith in feudal China to be played by RZA himself, because of course! — production details from the period film have been kept largely on the hush, aside from co-producer / co-writer Eli Roth’s colorful tweets from the set. That is, until a few cast members began posting (non-spoilery) reports from the set describing how things are going.

Russell Crowe Appears Confirmed For RZA’s Kung-Fu Film

Besides the exciting news that Wu-Tang Clan member and martial arts-aficionado RZA’ s Kung Fu film The Man with the Iron Fist was actually beginning production in China, there hasn’t been much to report on the project. The fact that co-writer Eli Roth stepped on as producer along with Quentin Tarantino seemed like a forgone conclusion and the cast of Lucy Liu, Daniel Wu and Byron Mann more or less made sense. But finally, a bombshell of sorts: Russell Crowe appears confirmed to star in the film.
