Studs are out, huggies are in. The latest jewelry trend to infiltrate your Instagram feed, huggie earrings are accessories that look similar to traditional hoops, except the design is much slimmer. When you wear them, they look as though they’re hugging your ear lobes, hence the name. Popularized by the likes of Meghan Markle — sorry, we mean Duchess of Sussex — huggies make for a simple yet elegant accessory. The best part is they come in different kinds — with plain silver or gold band, adorned with pearls or different plated shapes, but we reckon the best ones are those embellished with crystal detail, like the Swarovski Crystal Micro-Pav’e Curved Huggie Earrings . Chic enough to be worn on their own, these earrings can dress up any look. They’re crafted with 18K of plated gold and bedazzled with gorgeous Swarovski crystals. Unlike other huggies, these are hypoallergenic and offer a comfortable fit. Whether you decide to wear them with only a pair of jeans and a tee on casual days or a little black dress for night outs, these huggies will complete any look. N BA star LeBron James ’ impact goes far beyond the basketball court. The Akron, Ohio native has continually utilized his platform and resources to support individuals in need. According to WKYC , the Los Angeles Lakers player surprised one of the students from his I Promise School with a shopping spree just in time for the new school year. “We shouldn’t have our kids worrying about if they’re going to have pencils and bookbags. Only thing they should be worried about is how they can be a great student, a great classmate, a great brother, a great sister.” — LeBron Thank you @walmart & @kingjames pic.twitter.com/r0b7OmcU6P — I PROMISE School (@IPROMISESchool) August 30, 2019 The surprise was a part of James’ partnership with Walmart. He teamed up with the national retailer earlier this year to assist with pushing their initiatives surrounding education and hunger forward. The student, whose name is LaRiyah , was gifted with a back-to-school spree for herself and her peers at a Walmart in Kent, Ohio. For James, this act of kindness was personal. While coming of age in Akron he witnessed first-hand how school supplies can become a financial burden for families who are struggling to make ends meet. “Coming from Akron, it’s easy for me to be able to relate to anyone of my kids in school because I’ve walked those same roads, not knowing if you’re going to be able to go back to school,” said James in a statement. “To have such a great partnership with Walmart and outfit our kids with supplies, I believe is going to do something for their confidence to just hit the ground running.” The surprise was just one of a few social good projects that James is leading with Walmart. Earlier this year—as part of the Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign —James created a pantry at the I Promise School for underserved families that featured food and personal care items. James isn’t the only NBA player on a mission to provide underprivileged students with the items they need to have a good school year. In August, Kawhi Leonard teamed up with the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Baby2Baby and the L.A. Clippers Foundation to donate one million backpacks to children from low-income families. O ver the course of her career, the late legendary tennis player Althea Gibson broke several racial barriers within the realm of sports. She was the first African American to win a Grand Slam title and the first Black person to win at Wimbledon. In honor of her legacy, a sculpture of Gibson was recently unveiled outside of Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York during the U.S. Open tennis tournament, CBS Sports reported. Before Leslie Allen or Zina Garrison, Sloane Stephens or Venus and Serena Williams – there was Althea Gibson. A sculpture honoring Gibson, who broke the color barrier in international tennis, was unveiled Monday at the start of the 2019 US Open. https://t.co/9QGVERprxQ — The Undefeated (@TheUndefeated) August 26, 2019 The creation of the sculpture was an effort led by the North Carolina-based One Love Tennis group. The young members of the group penned letters to leaders of the United States Tennis Association encouraging the organization to create a sculpture of Gibson to pay homage to her contributions to sports. The bronze statue—which was built by sculptor Eric Goulder —was unveiled by former tennis player Billie Jean King . “Althea is a very strong reminder that it’s important to the living people right now that we carry on her legacy and the legacy of equality,” said King during the unveiling ceremony. “I knew if Althea had gone through what she had gone through and changed the world, that I had a chance to follow in her footsteps and help change the next generations.” Those who were close to Gibson say that she would have been beyond humbled to receive the honor. “It’s about time,” he former doubles partner Angela Buxton told The Undefeated . “Althea, with her two ticker-tape parades, still wasn’t allowed into a hotel where the whites sleep or a water fountain to drink where whites drink, but she helped to break that down.” Gibson passed away in 2003 at the age of 76. The unveiling of her statue comes months after the city of Richmond renamed a road after Arthur Ashe . A Black-owned real estate development firm is on a mission to address gentrification within the city of Atlanta. According to Black Enterprise , a division of the real estate company H.J. Russell & Co., dubbed Russell New Urban Development LLC, is working towards providing affordable housing for Atlanta residents impacted by the wrath of the city’s changing landscape. Black-Owned Construction Firm Revitalizes Housing Units in Atlanta to Combat Gentrification https://t.co/Xf8XPQpurw — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) August 27, 2019 The company completed a residential project that features 210 affordable units for families, senior citizens, and those who have disabilities. The properties are located in Old Fourth Ward and Reynoldstown. All of the units are subsidized, and residents will have to pay 30 percent of their annual income for rent. Organizers of the $22.3 million project say that they are dedicated to bridging the housing affordability gap for low-income families and are on a mission to provide quality housing for Atlantans impacted by gentrification. “Our investment to enhance affordable housing underscores our dedication to building communities, and at the same time, enhancing the living environments of some of the city’s most vulnerable residents who also deserve quality housing in the heart of Atlanta,” President of H.J. Russell & Co. H. Jerome Russell , said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “With the completion of these renovations, along with the stipulations on these projects, we have effectively preserved a significant amount of affordable housing for seniors and families in the heart of Atlanta for the next 20 years.” There has been a push to create more affordable housing options in major cities. In August, Wells Fargo announced that it would invest $1 billion over the next five years for the creation of affordable housing. “We will address three key issues in underserved communities that have been plagued by the lack of affordable housing – housing affordability, financial health and small business growth,” Candy Moore , Senior Vice President of Wells Fargo’s Community Relations and Southeast Community Development, told The Atlanta Voice . “We feel we should be doing even more to address the systematic changes in affordable housing and uncover new ways to increase the availability and sustainability of affordable housing.” SEE ALSO: Rapper Common To Invest In Transformation Of Underdeveloped South Side Chicago Property Real Estate Mogul Don Peebles To Launch $500M Fund For Underrepresented Developers [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3885832″ overlay=”true”]
After being freed from prison after 21 years with the help of Kim Kardashian , Alice Johnson is now starring in an ad for the reality star’s new shapewear line SKIMS. “I was serving a 25-year sentence without the possibility of parole. Kim saw a video of me. She heard my story. She said, ‘This is so unfair.’ And by the way, I didn’t even know who Kim Kardashian was!” Johnson said. “She went to war for me to fight for my freedom. That’s why I call her my ‘war angel,’ because nothing stood between her and my freedom.” Real women, real stories: Alice Marie Johnson wears the Sculpting Bodysuit Mid Thigh ($68 in sizes XXS – 5XL) in Onyx. #ShowYourSKIMS pic.twitter.com/fBAnWJmL8q — SKIMS (@skims) August 29, 2019 Now, not everyone is happy with Johnson being in the ads, and not because of her, but because some folks feel like Kim, who has constantly been accused of cultural appropriation , is using the Black woman to sell her line…and trying to equate freedom from prison with wearing these “Spanx knock offs.” Kim having Alice (the older woman she helped free from jail) doing PSA’s for her shapeware and comparing it to freedom is so incredibly inappropriate. Yuck. — Chris Broussard’s source (@MmkayRulz) August 31, 2019 Kim K is using Alice Marie Johnson for her shapewear line promo. I cannot even. pic.twitter.com/l4BL4DoBYh — keejä (@Keeeeeeja) August 29, 2019 FTR, believing that this ad is a deeply cynical use of activism in an attempt to ultimately put more money into Kim Kardashian’s pocket neither denies Alice Johnson her agency nor negates the fact that Kim being instrumental to her release was a good deed https://t.co/PcSNH7IDae — Ashley Reese (@offbeatorbit) August 29, 2019 alice marie johnson's skims video is great… but what does any of it have to do with shapewear? — Madelyn Chung (@madelynchung) August 30, 2019 Kim has Ms. Alice Marie Johnson in a body sculptor ad on IG. I am unable. — Dr. Petty Shabazz (@Shaye_Tova) August 29, 2019 No fucking way Kim kardashian is using Alice Marie Johnson for her shapewear line promo. I can’t with this woman loool — aman (@honeymoonbbe) August 29, 2019 Kim kardashian is so fucking toxic she got Alice Marie Johnson free just to use her to sell her dumb spanx knock offs. If I see Kimberly I will fight her bodyguard on site. That’s probably as far as I can get. — alex smith (@alexsmi46471241) August 29, 2019 As we previously reported , Jonhson was arrested in 1996 and charged with drug conspiracy and money laundering. According to Mic , a string of events caused the mother of five’s life to crumble. First, she got divorced, then lost her job, and had to file for bankruptcy, which prompted her house to go into foreclosure. Sadly in 1992, her youngest son Corey died in an accident. Suffering from depression and watching her life spiral out of control, Johnson started hanging out with drug dealers and found herself caught up in a lucrative operation that transported and distributed cocaine to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1993, she was arrested, along with 15 others involved in the same drug bust. Somehow the prosecutors convinced the others to testify against her in court. While they were given sentences ranging from probation without jail time to 10 years, Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus another 25 years. Thankfully, last June, Trump granted clemency to Johnson after meeting with Kim. BEAUTIES: What do you think? Is Johnson being celebrated or exploited?
