It’s not a secret that our children’s hair has been under attack lately , but one little Nashville girl is turning being bullied into a moment of empowerment and self-love. This week, middle school student Promise Sawyers posted an amazing video of herself explaining how regardless of being made fun of, she will continue to keep wearing her natural afro “bigger and better” to school. “I told my mom and she said, “Don’t forget who you are and whose you are! And I said, “Okay. So today, I’m going back to school and I’m coming back bigger and better. And don’t allow anyone to steal your joy, don’t give them that much power. I am Promise Miamor Sawyers” The fifth-grader told FOX 17 Nashville News that when she started the school year at Head Middle Magnet she was wearing braids, but decided to take them out and rock her afro. But the kids at her school had a lot “of mean things to say.” According to FOX 17, her mother, Qui Daugherty, said that “in their house, they meet negativity with positivity,” so before Promise went to school the next day, she “asked her how she felt that morning.” “I felt confident and pretty,” Sawyers replied but says she was discouraged by all the negative comments. “At my old school, people thought my hair was cool.” That’s when Promise made her video to hype herself up for the day. “The video was made at that point, like she’s really taking a stance,” Daugherty told Yahoo Lifestyle . “The immediate family was more proud of that moment, but we had no idea the impact that it was gonna make and the amount of messages.” Since the video went on social media, it’s garnered more than 2 million views and more than 100K shares. Looking at all of the positive comments, Daughtery feels “blessed.” “It’s impacted people in so many different ways. It’s made a huge impact behind the scenes that has blessed me personally.” Promise has also inspired Kelly Clarkson who had her on her show on Friday, along with Tracee Ellis Ross , who said that she was “empowered” by the middle schooler. “I saw your video and I was so moved because your hair is an extension of your legacy, what you come from, your story and everything that you are and your beauty,” the Golden Globe winner said to Promise, who was in tears. “And I am so glad that you know that at 10-years-old what it took me so long to learn about myself. And you are such an example.”   We love it!  You go Promise! RELATED NEWS: That Little Black Girl’s Hair In The H&M Ad Isn’t The Problem. Perhaps The Problem Is You. Jonathan Van Ness, Queer Eye Star, Reveals HIV Diagnosis

Jonathan Van Ness, one of the stars of Queer Eye on Netflix, has made a pair of startling revelations. Ahead of the release of his memoir, “Over the Top, which hits shelves September 24, Van Ness just opened up to The New York Times about his health and history of addiction. “I’ve had nightmares every night for the past three months because I’m scared to be this vulnerable with people,” the fashion and beauty guru told the publication, adding: “There are issues that need to be talked about.” In the aforementioned upcoming biographies, one of the revelations Van Ness shares is that he tested positive for HIV when he was 25, after fainting while working on a client’s hair. “That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be,” he writes in the book, according to the newspaper. Van Ness went on to say he thinks of himself a proud “member of the beautiful HIV-positive community” and hopes that his transparency surrounding the subject will shut down typical misconceptions. “When Queer Eye came out, it was really difficult because I was like, ‘Do I want to talk about my status?’” he told the newspaper, noting that the political climate swayed his decision. “I do feel the need to talk about this,” he added. This is not all the star confesses, however. He also opens up in his memoir about having been abused by an older boy at a young age, which “planted the seed for other self-destructive behaviors,” according to the this same newspaper feature. “For a lot of people who are survivors of sexual assault at a young age, we have a lot of compounded trauma,” he explained to the newspaper. As a young teenager, Van Ness recalled how he would meet up with older men and that, after using up his money on drugs in college, he “advertised sex for money on Gay.com.” By the time he was in his early 20s, Van Ness was using methamphetamine and ended up going to rehab twice, the publication writes. Thankfully, however, Van Ness says he has not used drugs of any sort in years. Queer Eye is a spinoff of Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. It premiered in February of 2018 and has since amassed a very large following. “These are all difficult subjects to talk about on a makeover show about hair and makeup,” Van Ness adds. “That doesn’t mean Queer Eye is less valid, but I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed.” Elsewhere in this interview, Van Ness addresses the pressure to live out his Queer Eye persona when meeting fans in real life. “If you’re having a terrible moment or in the middle of a conversation about something serious, people don’t care,” he explained. “They want their bubbly J.V.N. and to get that major selfie.” However, he concluded on a positive note: “I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed.”

Yikes: Everyone Involved In The Kevin Hart Car Crash Is Lawyering Up For Imminent Lawsuit

Source: Newspix / Getty Kevin Hart And His Passengers Are All Getting Lawyered Up It looks like Kevin Hart and the two people in his car that crashed on September 1 have all gotten themselves lawyers as everyone involved is expecting a big lawsuit. According to reports from TMZ , sources with direct knowledge say the driver–who sustained serious back and chest injuries–has an attorney, as does the passenger in the backseat, who sustained only a few minor injuries. Kevin Hart, of course, has a lawyer as well. Kevin is expected to be in the crosshairs of the other two people inside the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda at the time of the crash because the car was not equipped with any sort of safety harnesses or airbags. The argument here is that Hart should have worried less about keeping the car authentic and more about the actual safety of the vehicle, and not doing so constitutes negligence, on his part. The once driving the car could also be on the hook for both Kev and the backseat passenger, but that presumption is a little premature since the CHP is still investigating the cause of the crash. TMZ also reports that the company that customized the car for Kevin could also be looking at a lawsuit, for those same issues mentioned about safety above. The company is supposed to be the expert on cars, and even if Kevin wanted a custom job without safety harnesses, they should have refused anything that wasn’t safe for those involved, especially with a 720 horsepower engine. Law enforcement sources told the publication that CHP may lobby the California State Legislature to prohibit custom car companies from rolling out products without harnesses, regardless of whether the customer wants them or not.

App Focused On Black Maternal Health Receives $200K Grant

The rest is here:

T he maternal mortality crisis continues to disproportionately affect Black women. According to new research released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , for women over the age of 30, Black women are four to five times more likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth. Entrepreneur Kimberly Seals Allers is aiming to reverse this alarming trend through her app Irth and she recently received $200,000 in funding to push her efforts forward, Black News reported. New App to Help Save Pregnant Black Women and Their Babies Gets $200K in Funding https://t.co/FCktPt7ZjJ pic.twitter.com/d3EUFpR0sw — Black News (@BlackNews) September 5, 2019 The app was designed to combat racial bias in the healthcare space; especially for Black moms who are expecting. The digital platform features reviews and ratings of health facilities and healthcare providers so that individuals can make informed decisions when it comes to seeking the best care during their pregnancy journey. The grant was donated by the Tara Health Foundation which focuses on the well-being of women and girls. Seals Allers—a notable author and journalist—says that her personal experiences inspired her to create Irth. After enduring racial bias at the hospital where she delivered her child—a facility that her white friends praised—she saw first-hand how Black mothers are often mistreated. “At that time of my life, I was on student insurance and I was not yet married. Despite my career and academic accomplishments, I was treated like an unwed black woman with basic insurance. I lived that. It was clear to me that not all people experience the same place the same way,” Seals Allers said in a statement. Several individuals and organizations have stepped up to back platforms that are focused on addressing issues surrounding maternal health. Tennis star Serena Williams recently invested in the maternal healthcare startup Mahmee which provides expecting parents with a comprehensive dashboard that tracks the health of the mother and child. Parents can also utilize the platform for educational resources. Black Women Entrepreneurs Pay Off Debt For 30 Students At Clark Atlanta University

T wo Black women entrepreneurs paid it forward by giving back to students in need at their alma mater. Pinky Cole , the creator of the plant-based burger restaurant Slutty Vegan, and Harlem Hops owner Stacey Lee —both alums of Clark Atlanta University—helped 30 seniors who attend the historically Black college pay off their debt, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. These two women went back to their alma mater and asked for a list of seniors who wouldn’t be able to graduate due to outstanding balances. Then they partnered to clear them. https://t.co/UmdvX9MfAp — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) September 12, 2019 Lee, who founded Harlem’s first-ever Black-owned beer bar, was determined to find a way to assist students who are struggling with the cost of tuition. She contacted Cole to explore ways they could join forces and eliminate financial burdens for students so they’d be able to walk across the graduation stage. Cognizant of how the student debt crisis has hit HBCUs the hardest, the women were motivated to utilize their resources to make a difference in the lives of students of color. Cole and Lee—who are members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated—connected with the school and asked for a list of seniors who needed to pay off debt so they would be able to graduate. They randomly chose 30 students to help and surprised them on campus to let them know that their outstanding balances have been handled. “God has been so good to us both. It just felt right,” Cold told Because of Them We Can . “Growing up in a single-family household, and being the first to go to college, I know what it feels like to not know where the money is coming from. But there were people who believed in me despite my circumstances and I wanted to be that person for someone else.” Since the inception of her fast-growing business, which has evolved into a staple in Atlanta, she has donated over $100,000 towards the education of college students in need. Entrepreneurs are stepping up to help students of different ages tackle their debt. In June, a Black-owned barbershop in North Carolina raised money to help high school seniors pay off their debt so they would be able to graduate. Wendy Williams Attacks Christie Brinkley: You FAKED Your Broken Wrist!

As we mentioned during our Dancing With The Stars recap this week, Christie Brinkley had to bow out and was replaced by her daughter, Sailor. The reason was an injury — but Wendy Williams used her platform to announce to the world that Christie must have faked it. Now, Christie is firing back, exposing Wendy's secrets, and inviting the talk show host to be kinder. Unfortunately, despite a longstanding professional friendship with Christie, Wendy Williams spun a three-minute conspiracy theory on her show. After Christie tragically fell and broke her wrist, she had to bow out of  Dancing With The Stars , and was replaced by her daughter, Sailor. Wendy's theory, which she spun before her audience of millions, is that this was by Christie's design. According to Wendy, Christie must have planned to fake her injury from the start in order to give her gorgeous model daughter a career boost. Christie would be the “foot in the door,” and then millions of eyes would be watching Sailor every week. The cunning plan that Wendy describes sounds like a brilliant way to elevate a celebrity daughter from moderate fame to a household name. But there's a huge difference from thinking of a good plan and pushing it as a theory to a massive audience. And, again, Wendy and Christie had a lengthy history of professional friendship. Notably, Wendy had also appeared on  Dancing With The Stars  herself a number of years ago, when her show was brand new. It didn't help that Wendy took an unnecessary swipe, saying that despite Christie's looks, it's all “65 on the inside.” Thta's just rude. Christie Brinkley heard what Wendy had to say and was shocked — and hurt — to her core, as she revealed on  The Talk . “Wendy Williams started this rumor, which was stunning to me because I've been on Wendy's show a couple of times,” Christie states. “For some reason she liked me,” she reveals. “And she would call on me to support her in tough times.” “So,” Christie recalls. “I got a call one day that she was having a terrible bout of stage fright, and she was about to drop out of  Chicago The Musical ,” “And,” she adds. “Would I come over and talk to her.” Christie says: “I was like, 'You will never meet a more supportive and loving cast. You will love this experience and you will regret it if you don't do it.'” “I was there for her,” she emphasizes. “Then she goes through a divorce, and I get a call again,”  “I get a call again, because let's face it, I'm kind of an expert in that,” Christie acknowledges. Christie is a stunningly gorgeous woman who has famously gotten divorced four times. “I came again and was like, 'I'm going to help you.'”she shares. Christie suggests that Wendy might not have said these things if she had known how serious her injury really was. “I didn't just break the [bones]…” Christie announces. She explains that “because of the angle I hit, they shattered,”  “My surgery, that was supposed to take an hour and a half, ended up taking three hours,” Christie laments. “And,” she reveals. “They ended up putting in a plate.” “My message to Wendy is, it's so much more fun to be kind,” Christie suggests. “Try it,” she adds. “t can't feel good to try to hurt other people.” “If it feels good, something's seriously wrong,” Christie concludes. Honestly? Remind us to never piss off Christie Brinkley. She may be a knockout, but she will verbally knock you tf out — with a smile on her face.
