Demi Lovato: A Look Back At Her Big 2011

This year saw the Disney star experiencing professional and personal breakthroughs. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Denise Truscello/ Getty Images Demi Lovato will be on hand for MTV’s New Year’s Eve festivities to rock the night with a performance. But before the party kicks off, it seems fitting to look back on her big 2011, which wasn’t just a banner year for Lovato’s career, but also her personal life. After leaving treatment in January, Lovato opened up about her issues (which included eating disorders and self-mutilation) and was on the mend. She thanked her fans for standing by her while she sought treatment and focused on getting healthy. “I can’t tell you how much light you brought into my life in probably the darkest time of my life,” Lovato said shortly after being released. “Without you guys I wouldn’t be here today.” The former Disney princess decided to step away from her Hollywood career to focus on her pop career when she left her hit Disney show “Sonny With a Chance.” ” ‘Sonny’ was a chapter in my life I will be forever grateful for,” she said in April. “Thank you all for watching.” By July, she was fully in pop-star mode, dropping not only the single for “Skyscraper” but also the equally empowering video for the stirring ballad. “I’ve been pretty honest,” Lovato told MTV News about the track. “My whole journey has been about telling my story and hoping that when I share my story, it inspires somebody. So when I decided to come out with a single that was honest and about my journey and about standing strong and tall like a skyscraper, I hope that it inspired people. “I thought that there was a bigger opportunity for me to come out with a song that would inspire people, rather than it be just another dance song on the radio,” she added. The song was the lead single off Unbroken, which she dropped in September. “I think it’s grown-up, but it’s not too grown-up,” Lovato explained about the album. “It’s not tasteless. It’s growing up with my fans. It’s [like] I’m not a kid anymore, but I’m also not a full-grown woman either. So I’m in that in-between stage, trying to figure out where that is. So I’m figuring it out, just like my fans are.” In addition to causing a stir with her own music, Lovato had everyone going crazy over her cover of Lil Wayne’s “How to Love.” She also performed a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem at the World Series and recently returned to the Illinois treatment center where she spent time as a guest speaker . As the year wraps up, Lovato’s fans will have a new single to look forward to, the feel-good track “Give Your Heart a Break.” Related Videos Demi Lovato’s Year In Review

Amy Winehouse: We Bid Farewell To A Titanic Talent In 2011

Singer’s death at age 27 and the comeback that never was is our #10 Newsmaker of the year. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Getty Images If I had gone to journalism school, I’m sure one of the first things they would have taught me was to remain objective in my reporting and not get too emotionally involved in the subjects I cover. But, just like the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Aaliyah and Sublime’s Brad Nowell, I cared more than was probably professionally prudent when I found out that Amy Winehouse had died . I didn’t personally know Winehouse, had never interviewed her and had only seen her perform a few times. But something about her titanic talent spoke to me, almost as much as the fascination I (and all of us, I suspect) had about her madcap, edge-of-a-knife life. We love reading (and writing) about the chaos of star’s lives because it allows us to live vicariously through the insanity they reap from the safety and security of our by-comparison tame lives. We shook our heads when she had that disastrous show in Belgrade in June, fearing that it meant we would have to wait even longer for her forever-gestating follow-up to her 2006 breakthrough second album, Back to Black. The news Winehouse had made since her 2008 Back to Black Grammy triumph was mostly bad — arrests, drug possession, punch-ups, divorce, rehab, canceled shows — but her pugnacious attitude and promise kept us interested. I was pulling for her because I know all too well from experience how this one usually ends. There was a part of me that couldn’t wait for Winehouse to defy the critics and stage a triumphant comeback that would surprise and delight us all over again. Once she passed, though, we paid tribute the only way we know how, with essays about her importance to music , shout-outs from contemporary acolytes like Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj and the cast of “Glee” ), a look back at her career highlights on MTV and as much information as we could give you about the details of her death. (That enduring interest in Winehouse’s legacy became the #10 Top Newsmaker of 2011 .) We wondered if there would be more music from the singer who’d only managed two studio albums before her death , measured her influence beyond “Rehab” and dug up every bit of tape we had to shed more light on her creative process . Because I wondered it myself, we also asked experts if sudden fame had crushed the fragile, troubled singer. And we told you everything we could about the VMA tribute to her featuring Bruno Mars and Russell Brand . Once her cause of death was revealed, the first question that needed to be answered was, “how is that even possible?” And when details were revealed about her first posthumous album , Lioness: Hidden Treasures, we spoke to everyone we could about the tracks , fearing it might be the last we’d hear from this suddenly silenced voice. We were as sad as you were, but we kept it together to bring you the news. Well, almost. In a Newsroom post, I reminisced about the first time I saw Winehouse perform, at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2007. I dug through the tens of thousands of pictures in my iPhoto folder to find the series of shots I’d snapped of her from just a few feet away at her Stateside debut. I remembered how blown away I was by the enormous, tear-stained sound coming from this tiny woman. I wrote about how I sometimes reveled in reporting on her bad behavior. But mostly, I admitted that like a lot of you, I’m just sad we won’t have Amy around anymore. How did Amy Winehouse’s death affect you? Share your thoughts below. Celebrity of the Year Finalist #3: Charlie Sheen

We’re down to the top three. With the remaining days in 2011 ticking down to zero, THG has been ranking the most newsworthy celebrities of the year, starting at #10 with Lindsay Lohan and moving on, in order, to… Jennifer Lopez ; Selena Gomez ; a host of viral video stars ; Katy Perry ; Justin Bieber ; and pretty much everyone in the Royal Family . Now, at #3, we present… Charlie Sheen ! Due to a relatively quiet second half of the year, it might be easy to forget the unparalleled, unstable tear Sheen was on to kick off 2011. So here is a two-word reminder: Sheen’s Korner . The shenanigans got underway almost as soon as the calendar turned, as Charlie spent into the six figures on a Las Vegas-based sex and drug romp in January that included strippers, cocaine and plenty of headlines. He was then hospitalized a few days later after a similar party in his home. From there… wow. Sheen was at the center of a storm truly never seen before in the annals of celebrity gossip. He was in rehab, he was out of rehab. He was fighting publicly with Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, who eventually shut down production on that sitcom. He was collecting live-in girlfriends he referred to as “goddesses” and giving interviews in which he bragged about his capacity for cocaine and explained why Thomas Jefferson was a pussy . The dude totally lost it. Remember all these quotes ? Incredibly, this all happened over the course of just a few weeks. Sheen was fired from the highest-rated sitcom on TV; became the fastest Twitter user to ever amass one million followers; and created the year’s most overused, obnoxious, single-word catchphrase. But the insane times could not last forever. Or even for six months. Sheen bombed in a series of live, ridiculous performances , lost his goddesses and went about trying to revive his career. He settled a lawsuit with Warner Bros., appeared contrite in a lame, contrived Emmy speech and somehow convinced FX to give him another shot. The actor will anchor a program based on the film Anger Management in the summer of 2012. Personally, the star is also back on track. He’s supporting ex-wife Brooke Mueller’s rehab efforts with his own money and spent the holidays on vacation with another ex-wife , Denise Richards. Heck, to anyone born in the last six months, Sheen would come across as a caring, responsible, drama-free father. But to all of us who lived through his escapades in the winter/spring of 2011, Sheen put on a show unlike any we’ve ever seen before or will see again. It’s simply shocking that the actor himself actually lived through it.

Won’t you be happy in a few more weeks when Beyonce finally has this baby (or pics her up from wherever you Anti-stans really think the baby’s coming from)?? So what IS she getting him? “I can’t say, it has to be a surprise! Seriously, though, we both keep seeing super-cute stuff for the baby, so I am sure even our presents for each other will involve the baby in some way!” Miss Knowles continued, “Also Kelly [Rowland] has been so busy buying gifts for the baby, I think she might forget to buy for me this year! She is always seeing cute gifts for the baby in London.” After opening up all of their bountiful gifts, Beyonce is all about relaxing with her loved ones, as she told, “I will be with family. We are both so busy throughout the year that Christmas is just a time to relax with family and count the many blessings in your life. Christmas Day is a no-TV zone. HBO Cancels Hung, How to Make It In America, Bored to Death [PICS]

Sad news for fans of Rebecca Creskoff and Lake Bell : you’ll never get to see them naked again…on their HBO shows, anyway. The cable network announced yesterday that after a subpar season for both series, they are canceling Hung and How to Make It in America , along with the Jason Schwartzman / Ilsa Fisher comedy Bored to Death . Hung and Bored to Death both saw their ratings drop by over half this year- 2.31 million people tuned in for the Hung Season 2 finale last year, while a relatively small 930,000 stuck around ’til the end of season 3. Similarly, Bored to Death saw a sharp drop from an average 1.1 million viewers per episode in season 2 to an average 240,000 for this year’s season 3. [Guess it really was boring.- SC] On the other hand, How to Make It in America was never really able to gather the following that propelled the similar HBO series Entourage through eight seasons; even as Lake Bell’ s nude debut spurred an (ahem) swell of interest here at Mr. Skin, the series topped out at 560,000 viewers per episode. In comparison, Game of Thrones was considered HBO’s breakout success this year; the season 1 finale drew 3.9 million viewers for its initial airing, with an average 8.3 million people taking in each episode across DVR, HBO GO, and regular ol’ cable. Are you bummed about Hung ? Wish How to Make It had made it? Or are you just looking forward to whatever nude tricks HBO has up its sleeve? Let us know in the comments!
