Lady Antebellum Win Song Of The Year Grammy For ‘Need You Now’

Group beat out Eminem and Cee Lo Green for songwriters award. By Gil Kaufman Lady Antebellum Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It’s a good thing both Eminem and Cee Lo won Grammys earlier in the night, because when it came time for the first of the “big three” awards handed out on the telecast, they had to keep their seats. The songwriters award, Song of the Year, went to Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” which beat out Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Cee Lo’s “F— You” (listed as “The Song Otherwise Known as ‘Forget You’ “), and tracks by Ray LaMontagne and Miranda Lambert. The swaying ballad by the country trio, who’d already won three awards earlier in the night, performed a tribute to Teddy Pendergrass and enjoyed one of the best-selling albums of 2010, seemed to take the group by surprise when it was announced. There was plenty of high-fiving and a fair amount of hand-on-mouth shock from singer Hillary Scott. Mandolin and guitar player Dave Haywood summed it up when he said, “What an amazing year, we are so blown away,” giving props to their management, who they said were behind the anthem that completely turned the group’s world upside down. Scott thanked the fans and radio, saying breathlessly, “this past year has completely changed our life, and love you all so much, thank you.” The win by Lady Antebellum helped slow down some of the preshow hype about Eminem possibly sweeping the top prizes, although at press time the rapper still had shots at Record of the Year and Album of the Year. The loss for Slim Shady continued the night’s shut-out for his hit collabo with Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” which helped fuel the massive sales for his comeback smash album, Recovery . Justin Bieber, Rihanna And Others Tweet About Pre-Grammy Activities

Grammy-nominated stars tweet about bum-rushing theaters and getting freaked out by Sunday’s awards. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rihanna Photo: Getty Images The Grammys are going down Sunday night, but in the days beforehand, many of the stars up for hardware have been tweeting about their antics. Some missives were related to the big show, others were just in good, clean superstar fun. Cee Lo, who is up for four mini gramophones — including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Urban/Alternative Performance and Best Short Form Music Video — tweeted on Friday about getting a luxurious lift from one of his megastar pals in order to arrive at his destination in timely fashion. “Yo yall might not believe me but steven Spielberg is letting my use his private jet to get to san diego on time!” the Lady Killer wrote . “Its nice to have friends.” Grammy newbie Justin Bieber, who is in the running for two awards, including the coveted Best New Artist trophy, is also spending the weekend celebrating the release of his documentary, “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” The teen sensation also decided to add the element of surprise to his 3-D flick by dropping in on some lucky moviegoers. “About to surprise another theatre with the crew!!” he wrote . “U support us so we support u. Thank U! Let’s shock the world #NSN3D.” Indie darlings Arcade Fire also unleashed a surprise on their fans Friday night by playing a last-minute, 500-ticket secret show. The collective, which is up for trophies like Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals, worked well-worn hits and insta-classics and even got a legendary street artist to helm the wheels of steel, tweeting on Friday afternoon, “Shepard Fairey will be DJ’ing before set tonight in LA.” Rihanna, on the other hand, apparently spent her Saturday helming her own low-key shindig. The songstress, who will hit the stage and whose Eminem collabo “Love the Way You Lie” is vying for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song, replied to a fan who asked her what’s up, saying that she’s “just shakin my ass in the mirror.” The singer also conceded to some pre-show jitters. “I CAN’T STOP thinking about tomorrow!!!” she replied to another fan . “#AnxietyF——–!!!!!!!” Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Justin Bieber Vs. Drake: Best New Artist Grammy Cheat Sheet

Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding are also in the running at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Every year, a new crop of up-and-comers duke it out for the Best New Artist prize at the Grammys . Before the big show kicks off Sunday night, get to know each of the nominees in the coveted category. Justin Bieber In 2010, Bieber presented at the Grammy Awards, and now he returns this year as a two-time nominee and performer . He released two albums last year; hit the road, selling out venues at every stop; and managed to not only become the teenage dream, but also find creditability in the world of hip-hop, thanks to collabos with MCs like Ludacris and Kanye West. Drake Drake quickly emerged in 2010 as the go-to MC for hip-hop heads and teenyboppers. He asked fans to Thank Me Later on his debut album, on which he rapped about girls, fame and himself. Drake showed that he had some street cred and a lot of heart on the album. Florence and the Machine Florence Welch emerged as rock newcomer of the year with her inescapable hit “Dog Days Are Over.” The flame-haired songstress belted out tunes that had fans worshipping at her musical temple, especially after her electric performance at the Video Music Awards . Her 2009 album, Lungs, proved to have some legs when “Dog Days Are Over” took Hollywood by storm and also top 40 stations. Mumford & Sons Their album Sigh No More (released in 2009) flew under the radar for some time, before their Grammy-nominated song “Little Lion Man” launched them into the mainstream last year. In addition to the Best New Artist nod, the tune is also up for Best Rock Song, thanks to the English group’s sparse, folky approach to making music. Esperanza Spalding Like Mumford & Sons, Spalding has been releasing music for years. In 2010, Prince announced she’d be one of the many artists hitting the road with him for a leg of the Welcome 2 America Tour. Now, she’s poised to reach even more audiences thanks to the Grammy nod. Who do you think will win Best New Artist on Sunday? Tell us in the comments! Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Gleebasing: Fat Bottomed Girls Make Valentine’s Day Go Round

Phew! Glee shed that faux football-loving, thrill-seeking, Katy Perry-exploiting skin that it adopted for Super Bowl fans on Sunday , and got back to basics with last night’s Valentine’s Day episode, where Blaine explained that February 14th is the one day of the year when you can just tell the person you love how you feel. (Unless you belong to the Church of Love Actually , in which case that one day of the year is Christmas.) Meanwhile, Santana taught viewers that revenge is best served with glandular fever, and Ryan Murphy sold his soul to the Gap for a cute dance number. Let’s review the highs and lows.
