A Lil Positivity: LL Cool J’s Wife Simone Celebrates Being Cancer Free

LL Cool J’s Wife Simone Celebrates Being Cancer Free It’s rare to see hip hop couples that have withstood the test of time, but Queens-born rapper LL Cool J and his wife Simone are living proof that it can most certainly be done no matter how difficult things may get. This year, the Smith family has yet another reason to celebrate as it marks the ninth year that Simone has been Cancer free. via News One In 2004, Simone Smith was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer called chondorosarcoma. After her stage III diagnosis, the family, especially [her husband]Mr. LL himself, stopped everything in order to be with her and to assist her on the road to recovery. In her own words, Simone says, “I have a piece of jewelry, that when it’s purchased, proceeds go towards the American Cancer Society. The reason why I did that is because back in 2004, I had a very invasive surgery done because they found a chondrosarcoma tumor in my tibia bone. So I had an invasive surgery called microvasuclar reconstructive surgery, and they had to remove my whole tibia bone and replace it with my fibular bone from my left leg. It took me almost 2 1/2 years to learn how to walk again. I fought through it, so I was a little depressed for like about..two weeks. But my grandmother called me up and told me, ‘you better not be depressed and get prayed up for those doctors who are doing this surgery on you and you’re gonna beat this.’ So I prayed to God and since then my test results have been great.” This year marks the ninth year that Mrs. Simone Smith has been cancer free. When asked what keeps her inspired, Simone names three things: her faith in God, her husband and her children. Simone is one strong woman to be able to still hold her family down in the midst of battling this life-changing disease. This just goes to show that you never know what people are dealing with behind closed doors. Kudos to LL for not hesitating to put his fame on the back burner and stick by her side through it all. Race Matters Update: Howard University Responds To Allegations That No Black Male Students Were Admitted To Their Medical School Last Year

Howard University Responds To Accusations Of Bias Against Prospective Black Male Students Yesterday, we reported on an article by Dr. Boyce Watkins in which she addressed the recent claim made by a conference speaker that prestigious HBCU Howard University had purposely excluded black male students from their medical school this year and ended up with zero black make students admitted to the program. In response to the claim, a Howard University professor reached out to BOSSIP to clear up claims that the school says are inaccurate with this statement: A recent article circulated online erroneously states that the Howard University College of Medicine did not admit any African-American males this year. As of June 18, 2013, of the 120 newly admitted medical school students, more than 30 percent are African-American men. The data presented in the article are inaccurate and misleading. Howard University has a legacy of producing highly qualified and compassionate African-American physicians and other health care professionals who deliver patient care particularly in communities that have a shortage of physicians and public health professionals. And there you have it. We can definitely appreciate the school taking the time to clear this up and set the record straight. Continue reading

Race Matters: Howard University Faces Backlash After Allegedly Admitting No Black Male Students Into Their Medical School This Year

Howard University Faces Backlash Over Admitting Male Students To Medical School Taking on a long-standing issue within the tight-knit community of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Dr. Boyce Watkins recently penned an op-ed piece addressing concerns that there is a significant lack of black male students accepted into prestigious higher-education programs on a regular basis. Under the microscope at present is notable HBCU Howard University. Dr. Watkins shared a statement passed along by once of her colleagues who reiterated a quote from a speaker at the Rodham Institute Conference, which suggested that not one black male had been admitted to the Howard University Medical School program last year. Check out an excerpt from the discussion piece below: via Black Blue Dog The other day, I received an article submission from my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Julianne Malveaux. In her article, Dr. Malveaux did a wonderful job speaking on healthcare disparities, particularly those impacting the African American community. In a fleeting remark that was meant to make a broader point, Dr. Malveaux threw a nuclear warhead at me that made my face hit the floor. She said, “However, one of the speakers at the Rodham Institute conference indicated that not one African American man was admitted to this year’s class at Howard University’s medical school! If historically black Howard University won’t admit African American men, who will?” I was stunned to hear such a revelation, and could only ask myself, “What in the $#%^ is going on?” Howard University, one of the most cherished and respected HBCUs in the country, attracts top students from all walks of life. The school is certainly worthy of respect, but it’s stunning to hear that Howard, like so many other universities across the country, has a diversity problem. I have several people reaching out to the university and searching for data to find out if Julianne’s assertions are accurate, and I am hopeful that the school is responsive. But even if they have one or two black males admitted to the program this year, it would be astonishing that the number is so horrifically and embarrassingly low. The theories regarding why this racial exclusion exists are relatively dichotomous. On one hand, there is the “Black men choose not to apply” theory. In a similar spirit, there is the “Black men are too lazy and all want to be rappers” theory. This speaks to the idea that black men are so absorbed into stereotypical media images, turning up bottles at the club and trying to get into the NBA that we don’t want to become doctors. The notions above also tie into the “Black men just aren’t qualified” theory, which argues that black men are applying, but just can’t make the cut. While most of us can reference problems that have occurred in the advancement of black males, particularly due to the growth of the prison industrial complex, I personally know enough hard-working, intelligent black men to realize that there might something more sinister at play. What’s your take on this issue, Bossip fam? Are HBCUs biased against black male students and more focused on education young women? Or is this uneven enrollment a result of young black males being less qualified than their female counterparts? Let’s discuss. Continue reading

Don’t Blame The Swirl! Khloe Kardashian Shoots Down Allegations Her Attention Slorin’ Lifestyle Is To Blame For Lamar’s Struggle Baller Career

Is keeping up with the Kardashians ruining Lamar’s NBA dreams? Khloe Kardashian Talks About Lamar And Reality Show In a recent interview, Khloe admits she gets annoyed when people blame their reality show on Lamar ’s struggles in his career. When asked if there will be another season of “Khloe & Lamar,” she says: Via Miami Herald reports: “Yes. It’s not finished. I’m really protective. I’m like a mama bear. And when my husband and I filmed season one, Lamar won Sixth Man of the Year, was the first (Los Angeles) Laker to do so, he won a gold medal, and he also won a championship ring for the Lakers. But the year he got traded, people wanted to say, “Oh, it’s because of the show.” So, I was really irritated. This is my husband’s career, and I just didn’t like that someone would use this tool in a negative way. . . . But, yes, it will hopefully come back sooner (rather) than later. Lamar loves doing the show.” Do you look forward to the day when all the fame and attention are gone? You always want what you don’t have, and you have to be really careful what you wish for. I genuinely love what we do. When that day comes, it will give me more time to do other stuff, but I’m not begging for that day to come. I’m content either way. Lamar might as change his name to Kardashian and retire because he’s not leaving the attention slorin’ life anytime soon…
