Clerks 3: Coming in 2014!

Fun movie news this afternoon: Kevin Smith is hoping to leave the industry on a high note in 2014 with one last full-circle directorial effort: Clerks 3.   The film would be the swan song installment of his slacker saga, which began with Clerks , the 1994 flick that put the indie filmmaker on the map. Kevin’s announcement follows the news that his hockey flick Hit Somebody will be turned into a six-part miniseries on an unannounced network. “So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III #TaDa,” Smith tweeted . 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the original film, which was shot in a convenience store and continues to have a cult following to this day. The movie is responsible for launching Smith’s career, marked by hit indie staples like Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back . Smith also recently said in an interview with Good Day LA: “Instead of letting people [guess] for years, I said, ‘I will do Clerks 3 . 2014 it is the 20th anniversary. We’re going to mark it somehow, God willing, with Clerks 3.” “We just need Jeff Anderson to come back and say yes.”

THG Celebrity of the Year Finalist #3: Taylor Swift!

We’re inching ever closer to #1. With the calendar about to flip to 2013, THG is taking a look back at the year that was, specifically the stars who made it memorable via their songs, sex tapes, naked photos, arrests or – in rare cases – all of the above. Kate Upton clocked in at #6, and Justin Bieber #5. Now, following the royal selection of Kate Middleton at #4 , we present Celebrity of the Year #3… TAYLOR SWIFT ! The year will close with Swift’s “Red” atop the Billboard 200, marking the seventh time this year the album has risen to number-one. Moreover, it’s opening week sales of 1.21 million copies were the highest recorded in 10 years, with Swift becoming the only female artist to possess a pair of million-plus opening weeks over the course of her career. ” We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together ,” meanwhile, also hit the top of the charts – while symbolizing the true genius of Swift overall. She sells a mammoth number of records, and she pens personal tracks that create buzz over her personal life. Is she writing about John Mayer here? Jake Gyllenhaal there? Swift never says, but the conversation alone keeps her an integral part of the Zeitgeist. Of course, Taylor did engage in two high profile relationships as well. Everything seemed serious between her and Conor Kennedy, until the pair simply split and she quickly rebounded with Harry Styles of One Direction. They are still together. But Swift remains above the fray throughout; she is never caught in any scandal and continues to rake in the awards, winning two Grammys in 2012. There’s also this: Swift was just named the Most Charitable Celebrity of the past 12 months. Yes, it’s very good to be Taylor Swift. And with the 23-year old embarking on a new tour this March, it’s hard not to imagine her sitting once again on this same list a year from now.

Sofia Vergara’s Busty Holiday Swimsuit Tweet

Just when I didn’t think Sofia Vergara was going to get me anything for Christmas, she went ahead and Tweeted this awesome swimsuit picture. I know it’s belated and all, but I haven’t been this excited since the year I got a Super Nintendo as a kid. And I’m pretty sure this one’s going to be even more fun to play with. They Turn Us On, Dammit! Movieline Critic Alison Willmore’s Top 10 Overlooked Gems of 2012

This December is heavy with major movies — Zero Dark Thirty ,  This is 40 ,  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ,  Django Unchained and  Les Misérables — that are literally (use the bathroom first) and metaphorically big. As they dominate the year-end conversation, it seems like a good moment to to call out some films that may not earn many mentions at award shows and top ten lists, but nevertheless charmed, entertained or impressed me throughout the year. 1. Indie Game: The Movie This fascinating documentary about the relatively new world of independently made video games follows the maker of an established hit, a team preparing to debut their work and a guy who’s been toiling for years on something that’s still not finished. It’s a look at the ambitious far reaches of a medium that’s been dominated by the equivalent of blockbusters for most of its existence, and at what it means to strive for something personal and artistically inclined in a world just learning to appreciate those qualities. 2. Keep the Lights On Ira Sachs’ film about the ups and downs of a decade-long romance is based on his own relationship, and has the sting of the personal in the way it tracks how the needy Eric (Thure Lindhardt) and the drug-addicted Paul (Zachary Booth) support, hurt and enable each other. It’s a painfully honest look at how we can keep returning to the things we know are bad for us, and what it takes to finally pull away. 3. Sparkle Yes, it comes with the baggage of featuring an unhappy, exhausted-looking Whitney Houston in her last role and serving as the acting debut of  American Idol  winner Jordin Sparks . But  Sparkle  is an interesting, complex consideration of African American womanhood and what it means to be good and to be a success. And Carmen Ejogo , as the troubled and talented oldest sister, is an outstanding find — she’s magnetic even as she’s embraces destruction. 4. Sound of Noise A heist movie in which the goal is not to steal but to make music: This Swedish comedy is built around four outrageous and inventive movements in a piece performed a group of anarchist artists who unlawfully invade a hospital room, a bank, a plaza and a power plant to make themselves heard . It’s weird in the very best way. 5. King Kelly Shot on iPhones and consumer-grade cameras posing as them, this film about a camgirl and her adventures on July 4th is a damning portrait of self-documentation as narcissism, and worse, as a way of using the Internet to justify your behavior and your appeal. Between her online following and her fawning best friend, Kelly (Louisa Krause) has surrounded herself with people who tell her how great she is. She blocks out anyone who disagrees, although it becomes apparent that she’s as much at the mercy of pandering to her “fans” as she is empowered by their adoration.

James Franco Says He’s Likely Not In ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Sequel

James Franco said he is unlikely to return to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes following the exit of the sequel’s director Rupert Wyatt . “I was going to be a small part of the next one,” he told MTV. “There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct…” Franco said there was an opening for his character to make a return to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes , but changes at the Fox studio made it unlikely he’ll reprise his role. “There was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind,” said Franco, adding, “but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert’s not a part of it so I don’t know. My guess is I won’t be in it. Nobody’s talked to me since Rupert left.” Not that James Franco is in need of things to do. At the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, two of his co-directorial efforts, kink , a documentary about fetish website kink.com and Interior. Leather Bar , described as the “lost 40 minutes from ‘Cruising’ as a starting point to a broader exploration of sexual and creative freedom,” will debut. He is also starring in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Lovelace at the festival (this will be quite a racy Sundance for Franco apparently). And a quick look at his IMDb page lists about a dozen projects in various stages of completion. And just to keep things interesting, Franco recently signed with a small Minnesota publisher to debut a collection of his poetry set for April 2014. According to The Guardian poetry editor Jeffrey Shotts described Franco’s written work as a “series of portraits of American successes and failures from within Hollywood … But they are also smart and highly aware notes of caution of what can happen when the filmed self becomes fixed and duplicated, while the ongoing self must continue living and watching.” Franco published his first poetry, Strongest of the Litter earlier this fall.
