Jay Electronica’s ‘Exhibit C’ Video Still Coming, Directors Promise

‘We’re moving on it, man,’ Coodie of Creative Control tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid and Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Yemi Bamiro Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica is a hard man to pin down. The enigmatic MC has been in demand with media outlets and artists alike , whether it’s to pick his brain during interviews or for collaborations . Jay, however, has remained elusive. Earlier this year, when his song “Exhibit C” hit the Web, it shook the underground and even made its way onto popular radio stations like Hot 97 in New York. Various MCs freestyled over the beat and many fans anointed him the future of hip-hop, although some people had no idea what the New Orleans MC even looked like. The record has marinated for months, but there hasn’t been a video. A clip for “Exhibit A” was teased earlier this year but has yet to materialize. Well, there’s still hope for an “Exhibit C” video. No one is exactly sure when to expect it, but we had a nice talk with the cinematographers behind Erykah Badu’s controversial “Window Seat” video , Coodie and Chike of Creative Control , and they said the video is in the works. “We’re in discussion. We’ve been building on it, so hopefully soon,” Coodie said. “We’re moving on it, man. We’re in pre-production actually preparing to do it, so we’ll see.” “Yeah, but Jay is quite the magician, so he’s visible one minute and disappears the next,” Chike chimed in. Electronica admits that he takes his time with projects — especially his anticipated album. “For the past few years, I’ve been working at my own pace,” Jay said. “Not necessarily out of stubbornness; it’s just that I’ve been doing it for so long and trying to accomplish the thing for so long that I finally found being my own self and working in my own time and being the most natural is the things that yields the best results for me. “When questions like that come,” Electronica said about answering when his album will drop, “I would like to tell you, ‘Yo, it’s coming next week, two weeks from now.’ Because we have projects, me and Just Blaze, we got gangs of songs. I speak to Nas on a regular basis. We’re working on music together. There are a lot of things going on. But I don’t necessarily have a calendar mark of when a thing is coming, because I just kind of want to keep going the way it has been going, which has got me to this point. When I have been on a calendar, when I have been trying to do it that way, it hasn’t been successful for me. It hasn’t yielded any results.” A 36-second snippet of the video for Jay’s “Exhibit A” appeared on his YouTube page in January, but there’s been little news of what’s next. The video is directed by Jason Goldwatch and features Jay in Nepal among the people, meditating and talking to monks. While the directors were coy about what they had in mind for “Exhibit C,” Chike said they would pool together budgets and take a very creative approach. “Without giving it away, it’s definitely something that’s going to be very interesting, and it’s going to take a lot of artists,” Chike said. “Not just rappers, but a lot of artists as far as putting this together. Cats that are true with their craft. It’s going to be dope.” Other Heat This Week

By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News After Monday night’s kickoff in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, Drake’s Away From Home Tour is under way. The outing lasts until the end of May, so fans of the 23 year-old performer have ample time to catch and opening acts Francis and the Lights and K-OS on the road. But what about his family from Young Money? “A lot of the Young Money artists are doing their own thing,” Drake explained to MTV News on his opening night. “I know Nicki [Minaj] is recording her album. Gudda is on a run right now. “It was never brought to me that anybody had the time permitting to be on this tour for two months,” Drizzy continued. “Everybody is working on their albums and stuff like that. I love what a lot of people in Young Money have going on right now. But at the same time, I did say to myself I didn’t want other rappers on this tour opening up.” Drake also said that he didn’t feel comfortable placing his fellow Young Money artists on an “opening” level below him. “I didn’t want to stick anybody in my opening slot,” he added. “Nicki Minaj is a superstar, so to ask her to be on [the tour], unless we split the tour and both had equal time … Gudda, same thing. Gudda has his own things going on. They’re my friends, my family, I just don’t feel comfortable being like, ‘You wanna come open for me?’ It’s a weird thing. But I love ’em all. Lil Wayne Launches New Site To Keep Fans Updated From Prison

‘I’m in good spirits man, for real,’ Wayne posted on WeezyThanxYou.com. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne may be away for the moment , but the rapper is making sure he’s not forgotten while he’s gone. The imprisoned superstar launched a new Web site on Friday (April 2), WeezyThanxYou.com , where he’ll post weekly updates, blog about sports and respond to letters he’s received from fans since he began his prison stint last month. “Your letter was so thoughtful and sincere,” he wrote in response to Nurris Terrero of New York. “The way you worded everything left me in awe. Please send suggestions on books I should read. I look forward to checking them out.” In the first posting, Wayne explains that he’s been spending his days working out and reading the bible. The rapper also announced he will revive his popular ESPN blog, where in the past he opined on various sports. Next week’s scheduled post will be on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Wayne, a father of four, said his family has been most pressing on his mind during his sentence. “My kids race through my mind all day. They know they were created with love, so love is how their life will be defined. I just hope my love and adoration for them provides a temporary bandage on a wound I unknowingly inflicted on them.” “I’m in good spirits man, for real,” he wrote, contradicting rumors he had been involved in an altercation at Rikers Island . In addition to the postings, the site features a clock that counts down how much time the rapper has until his release. It currently rests at 215 days. Fans can also purchase merchandise on WeezyThanxYou.com, including “Free Weezy” Young Money T-shirts. The site was created by Lil Wayne in conjunction with popular hip-hop bloggers Karen Civil and Karla “hustleGRL” Moy. “Weezy explained to me the idea behind WeezyThanxYou.com, which will basically serve as his gateway to the free world,” Civil said in a statement to MTV News. “The site will allow the Young Money quarterback to post daily status updates as well as answer fan questions. ‘I wanted to do something for my fans, so they know I am still with them and that I love them very much,’ Wayne told me not too long ago. Fans who want to keep up on Weezy’s release date will be allowed to see a continuously running countdown clock until Dr. Carter returns home later this year.” What do you think of Lil Wayne’s new Web site? Drake’s Spring Break 2010 Set Shows How Far He’s Come

In 2009, Lil Wayne brought the rookie onstage with him; this year, he’s on his own. Drake performs at mtvU’s Spring Break 2010 Photo: mtvU It’s amazing to think that at this time last spring, Drake was a relative unknown. A year ago, Lil Wayne brought Drake and the rest of his Young Money camp onto the mtvU Spring Break stage in Panama City Beach, Florida, for a performance of “Every Girl.” That shortly after So Far Gone dropped, but shortly before the mixtape took Drake to another stratosphere. Fast-forward to last week’s Spring Break 2010 shows in Acapulco, Mexico, and there couldn’t be a more perfect example of the line in his song “Over”: “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t last year.” Drake performed that song — the first single off his upcoming Thank Me Later — for the first time on television in front of hundreds of excited, scantily clad partiers. This time, Drizzy was rapping by his lonesome, backed only by a live band. Drake recently told MTV News that he wanted “Over” (produced by Boi-1da and Al Khaaliq) to prepare everyone for what’s to come from him. “I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know, ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything,’ ” he said. “Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Just ’cause that’s what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself.” At Spring Break, Drake looked like he was composed and enjoying himself — jumping around, smiling and taking time to hit a beach ball back toward the crowd. Drake’s fellow Young Money member Nicki Minaj also performs at the show. She joined Ludacris onstage in a white one-piece bathing suit covered by a see-through body suit and a platinum-blond wig as she spit her equally eccentric guest verse for “My Chick Bad.” Trey Songz also hit the stage to perform his cocksure, sultry single “I Invented Sex.” Related Videos Spring Break 2010 Performances Related Artists Drake

Tyga Says ‘The Music Is Solid’ On New Mixtape

‘I’m a solid individual,’ Young Money MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Tyga Photo: Young Money This Week’s Main Pick Street King : Tyga Holding It Down For : Young Money Mixtape : Black Thoughts Real Spit : This tape has nothing to do with the Legendary Roots Crew’s lead MC — it’s all about Young Money’s West Coast rebel Tyga. “Basically, I named the mixtape Black Thoughts because when you think of the word ‘black,’ you think of great, confidence, individuality. I feel like the music is solid. I’m a solid individual. The music is solid. We put ‘thoughts’ behind it because basically all the music is things I think about, things people think about doing, things I’ve thought about doing or I’ve done. I put it all together and made Black Thoughts. ” Joints To Check For

Drake Premieres First Single ‘Over’

The first official track from Thank Me Later debuts on Toronto radio. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Paola Kudacki/GQ After a nearly yearlong wait for his fans, Drake’s debut single off of his debut album Thank Me Later is here. The song, “Over,” deals with Drake coming to grips with fame. And just like Drizzy chose to stay with his home team, Young Money, when signing his record deal, he also chose to debut his first official record in his hometown, on Toronto radio station 93.5 the Flow. The song is also available for download on Drake’s Web site . “Bottles on me, long as someone drink it,” the 23-year-old raps in a slow, aggressive flow. “Never drop the ball, f— is y’all thinking?/ Making sure the Young Money ship is never sinking/ ‘Bout to set it off in this b—-, Jada Pinkett/ You too fine to be laying down in bed alone/ I can teach you how to speak my language, Rosetta Stone.” The track was produced by Boi-1da and has an energetic feel. ” ‘Bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these n—-s,” Drake later raps. “All I need is a f—— red jacket with some zippers.” Even with anticipation for the record through the roof, Drake said he’s keeping everything in perspective. “This is my first song,” he told radio-show hosts Jus Red and Jwyze. “This is still my first single of my first album. This is still the beginning, as great as everything has gone.” “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year,” Drake sings on the hook. “Who the f— are y’all?/ I swear it feels like the last few nights we been everywhere and back/ But I just can’t remember it all/ What am I doing? What am I doing?/ Oh yeah, that’s right/ I’m doing me, I’m doing me/ I’m living life right now, man, and this what I’mma do till it’s over/ Till it’s over/ But it’s far from over.” “I went with ‘Over’ as the first look because of the words in the hook,” he said. “The hook being the most repetitive part. I got a lot of great songs on my album. I got songs for women who wanna feel special. I got songs for dudes — if you ever thought my music was too soft, this is one you will enjoy. I got a lot of variety on there, but the biggest thing was that opening line on the hook: ‘I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year.’ “I’ve just gone so many places in a short amount of time,” he added. “This record sums up where I am right now in my career. I think it’s a great first impression. The album is gong to be a great body of work for you to get lost in. Right now I just wanna have some fun. When we’re out partying, I want people to have some fun too, because this is the one.” The video for “Over” is scheduled to be filmed soon in Los Angeles. Related Artists Drake

Lil Wayne Video Directors Discuss ‘Different And Edgy’ ‘Roger That’ Clip

‘When artists are down to push the boundaries, that’s awesome,’ David Rousseau says. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne Photo: Thaddeus Lil Wayne may have gotten an unexpected extra day of freedom after a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing on weapons charges Tuesday (March 2), but the MC has prepared to cover his forthcoming jail term by preparing nearly 20 videos to air in his absence. The first of these clips is Young Money’s “Roger That,” which hit the Web Monday. MTV News chatted with co-directors David Rousseau and Adam Rush about the graphic novel-inspired, “Sin City”-influenced short, which only took a few minutes to imagine. “Jeff Panzer, the executive producer for all of the Cash Money videos, sent me the ‘Roger That’ track to sit with for couple hours — and it really was a couple of hours because I had to get an idea back to him pretty quickly,” Rousseau told MTV News. “We started texting back and forth and the idea to use ‘Sin City’ popped into my head and I came up with the concept. I thought of ‘Sin City’ because it was so groundbreaking and I knew it’d be a great match, something different and edgy that people would remember. The idea was born in an hour.” Rousseau then called on co-director Adam Rush and the pair — who have worked together before on clips for Flo Rida, Pitbull and DJ Khaled — began to fashion an action plan. “We discussed the concepts through style frames, which are mock-up images that show what the background would look like with Wayne, Nicki and Tyga,” Rush explained. “When the artists came to set, they had already chosen their outfits and things, then we shot it all that day in Miami and the footage of them in front of the green screen was flown to Los Angeles where editors put together a rough cut of all the images. Then, after the rough cut was approved by the label, Universal, the film was shipped off to me so I could do the film’s introductions, transitions, settings and background like the radar behind Tyga.” Fortunately, the Young Money camp understood the concept — because when filming in front of a green screen, artists must largely use their imaginations, since the scenery’s images won’t be created until post-production. “Filming with them on the green screen and capturing their energy was great because they understood what we were trying to do,” Rousseau said. “Green screen is hard sometimes because it takes a lot of imagination. We’ll sometimes print out story boards, which will have images close to what the screen will end up looking like to walk the artists through the idea. Nicki was great — I really enjoyed working with her, Tyga was great too. When artists are down to push the boundaries, that’s awesome. “On ‘Roger That,’ Nicki Minaj’s delivery is almost comic book-like, and then Tyga and Wayne come in like they’re rapping about fiction so the visual needed something out of the ordinary. The green screen was great because when you shoot on location, you’re limited to what you see — but with green screen it’s whatever you imagine, any scenario,” Rousseau added. As for Lil Wayne — who appears in the clip in a simple white T-shirt, sans any costume like Nicki’s flight suit or Tyga’s turn as an aviator — both directors say he’s a natural. “Wayne is Wayne — just put the camera and let him go,” Rousseau said. “He’s like Michael Jordan in the fourth quarter, just have to let him do his thing.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne And Young Money’s ‘Roger That’ Video Premieres

The clip is one of almost 20 shot before Weezy’s impending jail time. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne Photo: Ozone Mag Lil Wayne has filmed footage for nearly 20 videos to be released during his forthcoming jail sentence — which was postponed again Tuesday (March 2) due to a courthouse fire — and the blitz began Monday with the premiere of Young Money’s graphic-novel-inspired “Roger That” clip. The clip features Nicki Minaj, Tyga and Wayne in a green-screen-heavy version of the 2005 film “Sin City.” Nicki, stationed in a black-and-white, oversaturated depiction of Manhattan, raps first from a heart-shaped bed and then from the first-class section of an airplane. Her pink hair swings as she rhymes, “Just hopped off the plane came back from Vancouv/ Little white tees, some boobs and bamboos/ White girls tell me, ‘Hey, Nicki, your camp rules!’ ” Stationed in a sketched version of Los Angeles, Tyga is next up in the clip and is dressed as a pilot in a leather bomber jacket and aviator glasses. In the next scene, the heavily tattooed rapper performs in a nightclub to an all-female audience that looks straight out of a noir detective novel. “Young black ricos kill for the C-notes/ But me, though, I jack son/ … She wanna play games, but this is not bingo,” Tyga spits. Finally, Weezy himself raps voraciously, sporting a black baseball cap and white tee. “I’m a beast, you a pet, long neck, Keith Sweat/ Weezy f—ing Baby, capo in this bitch/ Money talks so have a convo in this bitch wit’ me,” the MC raps while bouncing around on the screen. This might have been just one video in a long line of clips, but Wayne and the crew look like they had a great time. Hopefully, that feeling will last for the entirety of the New Orleans rapper’s impending sentence. Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Artists Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne Says Goodbye To Fans In Online Video

MC expected to begin his year-long jail sentence on Wednesday. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne in his farewell video Photo: Ustream In the wee hours of Wednesday morning (February 9) Lil Wayne spent nearly an hour saying farewell to his fans in a live streaming video. He is expected to turn himself in on Wednesday afternoon in New York after his formal sentencing and begin his year-long jail term stemming from his July 2007 arrest on gun-possession charges. after a night of apparently recording in the studio, got on the Ustream page of Lil’ Twist , an artist in his Young Money camp, and said goodbye. “I’m out this bitch,” Wayne said, sitting outside a Miami studio. “To all my fans, my real fans I really, really truly love you. I love you with all of me for real.” Most of the Ustream footage was shot inside the studio, however. It started off with Wayne taking a poll and jokingly asking the fans if he should consider a person a real friend if they missed his farewell party at Miami club Dolce Sunday night in Miami. He then tells the fans as they started to log on by the thousands to download at least one song from his just-released-but-long-delayed LP, Rebirth. Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith (who spent 30 days in jail last year for a reckless-driving incident in which his friend was killed) briefly called in to say what’s up. “Why I be so close to the camera?” Wayne laughed, making fun of himself for putting his face near the Twist’s laptop screen. “You could really tell I don’t know nothing about the computer. … I’m really like a old n—a.” Later, Wayne sends love to his hometown New Orleans Saints for their Super Bowl win. “Shout out to all the Saints out there, Reggie Bush, [Marques] Colston, Drew Brees. The Dome Patrol, Rickey Jackson for being elected to the Hall of Fame this year. Pat Swilling …” For the entire broadcast, Wayne was very upbeat. He was his usual jovial self even when talking about his upcoming jail stint . “For all the people that didn’t know, this is the last time you gonna be seeing me live for a long muthaf—in’ time. So watch: This is history.” Wayne also talked about his his work ethic, pointing to a pimple on his forehead, which he said was due to not getting any sex. “You can tell I’ve been working hard. Sleeping alone. I’ve been sleeping with my clothes on.” Weezy then started to joke about his signature dreadlocks. “My hair got bounce! That sh–‘s nice, you feel me? That sh– real nice,” he said. “This is Lil Wayne, featuring my hair. And no, I did not have to cut my air off. That’s a stupid rumor. Look at this beautiful sh–.” After playfully posing for the fans, Wayne once again talked about his tireless work schedule. “Tonight’s my last night. … I came to the studio to get some work done. To all you artists out there, that should be a message or example. I came to work.” Shortly after, Fat Joe and his manager Macho walked in. They both hugged Wayne. Joe told Weezy that he loved him and asked him if he was gonna be OK. Within minutes, Drake called in on Wayne’s cell phone. You couldn’t hear Drizzy’s words, but it was obvious that the Young Money franchise player wanted to make sure he let Wayne know how he felt. “Nah, n—a, I love you. It’s all love,” Wayne said. “You know what I told you, hold that sh– down.” As the Ustream came to an end, Wayne walked outside to start getting ready to go home. “Thank you from the bottom of me,” he said, sitting in his car before pulling away. “Do not forget about me ’cause I will forever think about you. I cannot wait for you to see me again.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Photos Lil Wayne’s Battle With His Gun Possession Case Related Artists Lil Wayne
