Lil Wayne Swears Off One-Hit Wonders In Young Money

At the taping of his ‘Unplugged,’ the YM boss explains his strategies for Lil Twist, Cory Gunz and Shanell. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wanyne Photo: MTV News Through the years, Lil Wayne developed as an artist. The one-time neophyte of Cash Money records has grown from a slick-talking corn-rolled kid to the multi-platinum face of the label. Now, 12 years after releasing his 1999 solo debut, Wayne heads his own Young Money label, and as he explained to Sway after taping his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” he’s serious about the careful artistic development of all of his signees. “I’m not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder,” Wayne said of his “6 Foot, 7 Foot” collaborator Cory Gunz . “He’s nowhere near ready. He’s gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it. “I’m not gonna make a one-hit wonder,” Wayne repeated emphatically. “That’s not what I do.” Lil Twist, who is currently finding increasing success with his latest single, “Love Affair,” will not be a flash in the pan either, according to Weezy. “Twist is ready. Twist is a well-developed artist, and it’s about to be Twist’s turn.” The 18-year-old Dallas rapper joined the Young Money fold as a minor, but rather than have him go for the usually successful, cutesy route, Wayne chose to wait. “That’s why I didn’t shove Twist in nobody’s face. I could’ve been like, ‘This is our young artist’; the young, cute little artist of the label with all the adults,” he said. “I could’ve did that, but no, we’re gonna do this right. I didn’t want to put him out and have him as a kid star, and sometimes you don’t know what to do after that. So now he’s 18, he’s a teenager, and I don’t even have to look at the kid-star thing.” Young Money plans to release Twist’s debut album Don’t Get It Twisted later this year. Wayne expresses a similar amount of confidence in his alternative R&B female artist Shanell. “Shannell is past ready. Actually she came into the game ready,” Wayne said beaming with pride. “That was no developing; that’s a superstar, that’s a very talented woman. It’s just that you have to properly handle her situation the right way, ’cause you don’t want nobody to miss the point, and the point is, that is a very talented woman, and that’s what I want everybody to see.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com. Lil Wayne Covers Tupac’s ‘Perfect Verse’ On ‘Unplugged’

‘It’s just something about ‘Pac and I,’ Weezy tells MTV News about performing ‘Hail Mary’ on June 12 special. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: MTV It’s clear with his “Best Rapper Alive” proclamations that Lil Wayne wants to be remembered among the greats. And with an extensive and well-regarded catalog, he may already be there. Still, during Wayne’s MTV “Unplugged” special, set to air Sunday, June 12, the Young Money CEO pays homage to another rap legend: Tupac Shakur. “I knew because this is my ‘Unplugged,’ I said, ‘I want to do some kind of tribute to one of those great artists,’ ” Wayne explained to us of why he chose to perform the fallen MC’s 1996 single “Hail Mary.” “It’s just something about ‘Pac and I,” he said after the show’s taping last month. “I picked that second verse, ‘Penitentiaries is packed with promise makers,’ and I was like, ‘That whole verse is just perfect — they never realized the precious time that they wasting.’ ” “Hail Mary” appeared on Tupac’s The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which he recorded under the alias Makaveli. Although ‘Pac finished the album before he was fatally gunned down on September 7, 1996, the LP wasn’t released until after he died. The track has been covered by quite a few rap artists, including Eminem, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes, who remade the classic together in 2003 with a dis aimed at then-rival Ja Rule. The iconic song has never been covered by Weezy, though, until now. Last November, DJ Khaled appeared on “RapFix Live” and drew comparisons between Wayne and ‘Pac, noting Weezy’s eight-month incarceration for attempted gun possession, his work ethic and overall likability. “Ain’t nobody have that impact since Tupac. Lil Wayne is a genius and he’s a great person. He’s always showed love to everybody. You can’t say anything bad about Wayne,” Khaled told host Sway. “So when he was on vacation, it didn’t feel like he was gone. He dropped the album and it went #1. He was in every video. It was just as big. Now he’s home. When he was on vacation, he was that powerful. Imagine what he’s about to do.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com.

‘It’s going to be crazy,’ Bieber promises at MTV Movie Awards. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News It seems that things are well under way for the basketball movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber . How do we know? Well, the guys themselves updated us this weekend at two of the biggest events of the summer. Wahlberg told MTV News on Saturday night at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards that while he thought he’d be playing Bieber’s part initially, he eventually came around to playing the “old guy” role. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of like ‘The Color of Money,’ ” he teased. “So I get this call from Paramount [where they tell me about the story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ “I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” (Check out photos of Justin Bieber and tons of other stars backstage at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards!) Drake Talks ‘Crafting’ DJ Khaled’s ‘I’m On One’ Collabo

‘That’s the first time anybody has ever heard all three of us on a record,’ Drizzy tells MTV News of teaming with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Drake Photo: MTV News Drake is such a nice guy. When DJ Khaled approached Drizzy to appear on a track off of his upcoming Cash Money album, We the Best Forever, the Thank Me Later MC wanted to lend something memorable to his friend’s project. The result, “I’m On One,” Khaled’s latest single featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and, of course, Drake. “Khaled waited, like, forever and a day. I was taking my sweet time trying to craft this piece of music because I knew he needed a special moment,” Drizzy told MTV News at the song’s video shoot in Miami. “When I did it, I was like, ‘OK, it’s gotta be me, Ross and Wayne.’ That’s the first time anybody has ever heard all three of us on a record.” After leaking the song onto the Internet on May 12, Khaled and company were out shooting the video for “I’m On One” this past weekend — just 15 days later — and that fact isn’t lost on Drake. “To be out here shooting a video, it’s amazing how things work nowadays,” he said. “I used to make music and never think anyone was gonna hear it, now I make music and two weeks later, we’re shooting crazy videos in Miami, living the life.” Aside from working with Wayne, who Drake is signed to and frequently shows appreciation for, the Toronto-born rapper spoke on his admiration for his “brother” Rozay. “That’s one of my favorite people to rap with in the world,” Drizzy said. “That’s family the same way YM is family, the same way that OVO is family,” he said, name-checking his Young Money and October’s Very Own teams. “Ross know what it is, MMG all day, I hold that close to my heart.” What do you think of “I’m On One”? Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV Release Date Pushed Back To June 21

Wayne needs time to put finishing touches on the album, Young Money president Mack Maine told us. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is the most anticipated rap album of 2011 thus far, but fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to hear it. The release date has been pushed back from May 16 to June 21 to allow Wayne to add finishing touches on the LP, according to Young Money president Mack Maine. “He’s still perfecting a few things, he’s a perfectionist … changing a few lines,” Mack Maine said of Wayne’s recording process. “We also have a huge record that wasn’t done yet. We’re in L.A. right now. We have a little studio time and it should be done probably by Monday.” Just as Tha Carter III had an all-star lineup &8212; featuring the likes of Jay-Z, T-Pain and Robin Thicke &8212; its follow-up is expected to have guests of the same caliber. Unfortunately, waiting on the album’s contributors to turn in their features has added to the delay as well. “If you calculate all of that, by the time we would’ve finished mixing, we wouldn’t have met the [original] due date to turn in the album,” said Mack. “So we had to push it back.” As far as Tha Carter IV track listing that has been making its way around the Internet, Mack confirms that it isn’t final. “I’m pretty sure it can’t be all the way accurate, because I don’t even have all the features back on some of it, and two [of the] songs haven’t been done yet,” he said. Wayne’s video for “If I Die Tonight” featuring Rick Ross, which leaked online Tuesday and was quickly taken down, also isn’t finalized, according to Mack. The video was obtained by some email hackers but wasn’t complete, as Wayne and director Collin Tilley are still going back and forth with edits. Mack estimates that fans can expect a completed version of the clip within the next two weeks. Tha Carter IV ‘s album cover , which also leaked earlier this week, is real, however. The reveal wasn’t intentional and happened only a few hours after the Young Money camp approved the image, which features a picture of Wayne in kindergarten with tattoos on his face. “The same day it leaked out, we had just approved the cover that morning. Soon as we approved it, it leaked out within two hours,” the Young Money President said. And that’s not all. While trying to remain as tight-lipped as possible, Mack did dish on Tha Carter IV ‘s next single, which he compares to Weezy’s 2008 hit “Lollipop,” featuring the late Static Major. “It’s more along the lines of a ‘Lollipop,’ ” he said. “People call [them] crossover records and all of that, but [it will be] just one of those [records] that will be liked by the masses.” Related Artists Lil Wayne

Tyga Visits ‘RapFix Live’ On Wednesday!

Compton-born Young Money MC will join host Sway and take your questions on New West-themed edition of the show on MTV.com. By Alvin Blanco Tyga Photo: Christie Goodwin/ Getty Images Tyga will join us on this Wednesday’s special New West edition of MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” The Young Money rapper will only chat it up with host Sway, but we’ll have an in-depth look at some of the Cali rap acts that are making L.A. a go-to hip-hop destination once again. As always, we’ll also be taking your questions! Last year, the Compton, California, rapper caught an inadvertent hit when his Chris Brown collabo, “Deuces,” from their joint mixtape, Fan of a Fan, burned up the airwaves, landing at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Tyga and Brown went on to earn a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category for the song he co-wrote, and he’s now prepping his forthcoming album, Careless World. Before connecting with the YMCMB, Tyga was already making a name for himself on the L.A. rap circuit. In 2008, he dropped his debut single, “Coconut Juice,” which featured his cousin Travie McCoy. Soon Tyga became acquainted with Lil Wayne — the two appeared together on a remix to Fall Out Boy’s “Arms Race” — and signed on with Young Money a year or so later. Tyga cemented his place in the crew by contributing to Young Money’s hits “BedRock” and “Roger That.” Tyga is hoping to prove his patience will pay off as he’s waited in the wings for fellow YMCMB teammates Drake and Nicki Minaj to launch their careers. The first singles from Careless World, “I’m On It,” featuring Lil Wayne, and “Really Raw,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Pharrell, have heads checking for the project’s release. And earlier this year, Tyga revealed a Drake collaboration will be included on it too. We’ve already spotlighted Nipsey Hussle and Casey Veggies and our New West coverage will continue on “RapFix Live” with closer looks at the movements of Black Hippy (Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and School Boy Q) and Odd Future. Apart from the insight into the diverse underground rap sounds coming out of L.A., we’ll also be examining its party and dance scene . Find out what else is in store from Tyga and the rest of the YMCB crew when he sits down for his interview on the “RapFix” couch. The “Deuces” rapper will be taking questions from the audience via Twitter, @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #rapfixlive. Fans can also upload video questions for Young Money’s next star via Your.MTV.com . Tune in on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, including a special edition of with Cali’s own Tyga on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. We’re bringing you the next wave of hip-hop acts helping restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Keep it locked here for the next week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers! Related Videos Tyga Is Coming To ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Tyga
