The legendary and iconic vocalist passed away after a battle with stomach cancer early Sunday morning. He was 67. “It is a very sad day for the world of metal when an artist as unique and special as Ronnie James Dio leaves us,” Zombie said in an e-mail to MTV News. “He will forever be imitated but he will never be duplicated.” In 2006, Killswitch Engage offered up a loving imitation of their own, unleashing a cover of Dio’s “Holy Diver,” which became a staple of their live sets. A medieval-themed music video for their version, which received regular airplay on MTV2’s “Headbangers Ball,” featured all of the band members in character as people who could have been lifted right out of Dio’s lyrics. Guitarist Joel Stroetzel played a wizard. “Since my childhood, Dio has always been a hero,” Stroetzel told MTV News. “He was the definition of metal. His solo work, his work with Black Sabbath — he always inspired me. I will continue to be infinitely thankful for all of the music he has created over the years. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. God bless.” “Holy Diver,” “Rainbow in the Dark” and “The Last in Line” are just a few of the classic songs Dio recorded with his solo band. He was equally beloved for his work with Rainbow and Black Sabbath. One of the many fans of Dio-led Sabbath albums like Mob Rules is Burton C. Bell, vocalist for Fear Factory. “Dear Ronnie James Dio,” Bell said in a statement. “Thank you for your wisdom, your inspirational words, and your spiritual vision. In my youth, your voice and music had a major impact on my mind, and introduced me to the beauty and power of the dark arts. Your voice will always resonate within me.” Another contemporary American metal band, Mastodon, prepared a group statement released exclusively to MTV News: “There are only a few names that ring synonymous with heavy metal, and Ronnie James Dio is one of them. ‘High School Musical’ alum is gearing up to play Mimi in Neil Patrick Harris’ production. The other is a former teenage star currently navigating a move to break through to the next stage in her career. It almost makes sense that Neil Patrick Harris and Vanessa Hudgens would become BFFs, but it raises some eyebrows that they’re joining forces for …”Rent”? “I’m so excited,” Hudgens told MTV News of her participation in Harris’ production of the musical for a run at the Hollywood Bowl in August. “I haven’t done theater in years upon years, and that is my house.” The once squeaky-clean “High School Musical” star is set to play HIV-positive stripper Mimi in “Rent,” which will mark the musical directing debut of NPH. Launched in 1994 and set in New York’s East Village in the ’80s, Jonathan Larson’s rock opera tells the story of young artists struggling to survive the threat of AIDS. Harris starred in L.A.’s “Rent” production in 1997. “He texted me, saying, ‘Do you like “Rent”?'” Hudgens giggled as she revealed how she got the gig. “And I was thinking he was going to ask me to see it with him, so I’m like, ‘Yeah, I love “Rent”!’ ” NPH and Hudgens have really hit it off over the last year, as they worked together in Montreal shooting “Beastly,” an adaptation of the “Beauty and the Beast”-based novel that will hit theaters July 30. And while some might say that this second collaboration is a stretch for the wholesome Hudgens, she insisted that she’s not the only “High School Musical” alum in love with “Rent.” “It’s really fun because me and my girlfriend Ashley Tisdale used to always sing ‘Out Tonight,’ ” Hudgens remembered. “And now I actually get to do it onstage! “Ashley was so excited,” Vanessa said of breaking the news to her “HSM” co-star. “We were so obsessed with all the songs, and we would just sing them in the car over and over again. By Josh Wigler Janet Jackson (file) Photo: MTV News Janet Jackson and director Tyler Perry appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Friday (April 2) to promote their latest film, “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?” During the appearance, Jackson spoke at length about the death of her brother Michael Jackson . Jackson recalled being at her home in New York City when she received a call from her assistant relaying reports that her brother had fallen ill. After speaking with her sister LaToya and brother Jermaine, Janet learned that her brother had died. “It’s hard to believe still to this day,” she said while holding back tears. “There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about him. Our whole family thinks of him every single day.” Jackson said she has difficulty looking at pictures of Michael, so much so that she physically turns away whenever she sees videos or photographs of her brother. She can, however, view photos of Michael as a child, as it reminds her how much fun they had together in their youth. The last time Jackson saw her brother was a month before his death, when it was apparent to the entire Jackson family that Michael was very ill. Janet said she and her other family members staged an intervention for Michael, but the late pop sensation adamantly denied having any health issues. Perry took to Janet and her family’s defense, strongly emphasizing that the Jacksons did their very best to help Michael in the days, weeks and months prior to his death. In light of Michael’s death, Perry and the cast and crew of “Why Did I Get Married Too?” were very protective of Janet during filming . In fact, Perry revealed that certain scenes in the film, including one where Janet’s character speaks at a funeral, were altered in order to protect the starlet from public scrutiny, despite her own protests.
