George Zimmerman Apologizes to Trayvon Martin’s Family; Bail Set at $150,000

A judge granted bail for George Zimmerman at a hearing in Florida today, during which the defendant apologized to the family of Trayvon Martin. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set bail at $150,000, but would not allow his release immediately, citing further discussions needed about the terms. Lester said that Zimmerman must not contact the victim’s family; must wear an ankle monitoring bracelet; and adhere to a 7 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew. George Zimmerman Apology: I Am Sorry The hearing took place just a few hours after the release of a bloody photo of George Zimmerman’s head taken the night of the now-infamous altercation. Some say the photo could bolster his claim that Martin was the aggressor that night, and that he shot the teenager as an act of self-defense . In any case, the presumption of innocence was enough to earn Zimmerman bail. The judge’s order also states that Zimmerman cannot be in possession of any firearms and must not consume alcohol or controlled substances. Taking the stand briefly at the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, Zimmerman addressed the parents of Martin, who were seated in court. “I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your son,” he said. “I did not know how old he was,” he continued. “I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. And I did not know whether he was armed or not.” Zimmerman said he had made a similar statement to police. “I was told not to communicate with [Martin’s parents],” said the 28-year-old, who was charged with second-degree murder in the February 26 shooting. “I did ask [my attorneys] to express that to them.” Zimmerman has been behind bars since his arrest nine days ago. His attorney, Mark O’Mara, asked the judge to let him out of jail while he awaits trial. O’Mara also asked the judge to allow Zimmerman to leave the state while wearing a GPS bracelet, and to keep his location confidential to secure his safety. The judge said he will consider those requests before granting the release of Zimmerman, who will almost certainly plead not guilty in the case. Martin’s parents were in the courtroom, coming face-to-face with their 17-year-old’s killer for the first time. They wept at news of the bond. After the hearing, Martin family attorney Ben Crump said Martin’s parents were “very outraged” at the results of the hearing. He said: “It was devastating that [Zimmerman] got to give a self-serving apology to help get him a bond. Why is everybody protecting George Zimmerman?”

Trayvon Martin’s Big Brother Doesn’t Believe Zimmerman’s Shady Story: “He Wasn’t Violent. He’s Smarter Than That”

Trayvon Martin’s Brother Jahvaris Fulton Speaks On His Behalf With all of George Zimmerman’s well connected defenders clamoring to his defense, it’s good to hear Trayvon Martin’s big brother Jahvaris speaking up on his behalf! A lot of conflicting statements have been made about the night Trayvon Martin was shot to death by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Martin’s big brother doesn’t want any of them to cloud the memory of the bright, positive teen he’d been close to. In an interview with CNN’s “A360,” 21-year-old Jahvaris Fulton said Zimmerman’s description of the fatal night –and his claim that he acted in self defense– doesn’t match the Trayvon he knew. “Based on what I heard, with the 911 tapes and all the evidence, he tried to get away from the situation,” ” the soft-spoken college student told the network on Friday. “He wasn’t violent. So for him to actually jump on someone he doesn’t even know, to me that’s not him. He’s smarter than that.” Fulton’s comments echo what he told local media in late March, shortly after the shooter’s father and brother took to national television to bolster Zimmerman’s self defense claims. “I was listening to Zimmerman’s father speak yesterday, and he said something like, my brother was on top of his son and said ‘You’re going to die tonight,’” Fulton told Miami’s CBS 4. “That doesn’t sound like my brother at all.” In his interview with CNN, Fulton said that Martin was an honor student who couldn’t wait to go to college after visiting his brother at Florida International University during spring break. “I would like to remember him as… someone who’s positive, happy, bright future ahead of him,” Fulton said.”He was probably going to be somebody.” We’re glad Jahvaris is helping to keep his brother’s memory alive. Judge In Trayvon Martin Case Has Conflict, May Have To Excuse Herself Because Her Hubby’s Partner Got A Gig Talkin’ About Case For CNN

Judge In George Zimmerman Case Reveals Conflict, May Step Down We’d say get used to this lady’s face but it turns out she may not be sticking around for long after all. Cable TV and courtroom ethics collided in the Trayvon Martin case Friday when the judge suddenly announced that she has a conflict of interest that might force her to step down. Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler said her husband’s legal partner, Mark NeJame, has been hired by CNN to do the legal analysis on the controversial case. Recksiedler, who has been on the bench for barely a year, dropped that bomb at what had initially been billed as a surprise bail hearing for accused killer George Zimmerman. “I’m very very concerned that this is going to be problematic moving forward,” Zimmerman defense attorney Mark O’Mara said on a conference call. “If you choose to file a motion to disqualify me as judge it has to be in writing,” Recksiedler responded. So far neither O’Mara nor prosecutors have moved to disqualify her. Recksiedler, 39, of Sanford, Fla., was assigned to the case on Thursday morning. Her husband, Jason, works with NeJame, an Orlando lawyer who is now on CNN’s payroll. Recksiedler said it was important to disclose the relationship before the case goes forward. Zimmerman, who was charged with second-degree murder on Thursday, was not privy to the conference call. NeJame and O’Mara are also connected — both did legal commentary during the sensational Casey Anthony trial. Also, NeJame reportedly recommended O’Mara to Zimmerman, when he was looking for a defense attorney. The courtroom chaos came a day after the 28-year-old neighborhood watchman made his first court appearance for killing the unarmed black teenager. Zimmerman spent the night alone in a jail cell — isolated from other prisoners for his own protection, and comforted only by a stash of junk food. O’Mara, who is trying to get him released on bail before his formal arraignment on May 29, told National Public Radio he doesn’t expect the case to go to trial this year. “It would be guesswork,” O’Mara said. “But, most cases like this, I cannot imagine it going to trial within the year.” O’Mara also said he doesn’t think Zimmerman could get a fair trial right now — and certainly not in Seminole County, Fla. “You know, the wounds are still quite raw,” he said. “And part of it is, I would like to give the community some time, to begin to build back up its trust in the criminal justice process.” Asked if he would request a change of venue at Zimmerman’s arraignment, O’Mara said “I have no idea.” “It’s much too early,” he said. “That process really should occur only when you’re getting close to trial.” O’Mara, who is representing Zimmerman pro bono, said he got his wife’s okay before he accepted the job. “Because, obviously, it’s a fairly enormous undertaking,” he said. The fact that Zimmerman wasn’t immediately arrested for killing 17-year-old Martin caused a nationwide uproar — especially after 911 tapes revealed he continued to tail the teenager even after a dispatcher told him, “We don’t need you to do that.” Asked to explain why Zimmerman disregarded the dispatcher, O’Mara said he has yet to discuss that with his client. But O’Mara added that Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground Law, which Zimmerman invoked to claim self-defense in the shooting, will certainly be part of their legal strategy. Zimmerman was arrested Wednesday — 45 days after Sanford, Fla. police and prosecutors refused to charge him with murdering Martin. Is everyone in Florida cousins or something? Sure seems like George Zimmerman has a lot of connections. We don’t know if we would want her ruling the case if we were the prosecution, what with her hubby’s partner making recommendations for Zimmerman’s defense and all. SMH. George Zimmerman Appears in Court; Affidavit Outlines Probable Cause For Murder Charge

George Zimmerman made his first court appearance since being officially charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman wore a gray prison jumpsuit and spoke only to answer “Yes, sir,” after being asked questions about the charge against him and his lawyer. His hair was shaved down to stubble and he sported a thin goatee, which appeared consistent with his booking photo from the day before (below). He resurfaced Wednesday to turn himself in after weeks in hiding. Meanwhile, a new document provided additional details on the prosecution’s case. Judge Mark E. Herr said he found probable cause to move forward with the case and an arraignment would be held on May 29 before another judge. The affidavit of probable cause prepared by prosecutors shed some light on why they chose to charge Zimmerman in the February 26 shooting. The Orlando Sentinel says that on that night, Trayvon Martin’s mother identified screams heard in the background of a 911 call as her son’s. There were doubts as to whether Martin or Zimmerman called for help. Prosecutors interviewed a friend of Martin’s who was talking to him just before the shooting. Martin told the witness he was being followed and was scared. Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman. The affidavit says, “Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and followed Martin.” The affidavit says that “Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher” during his initial 911 call , who told him to stop, and “continued to follow Martin.” The 17-year-old “was trying to return to his home.” George Zimmerman: First Court Appearance At a press conference following the court appearance, Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara said he will seek a bond hearing “in the next few weeks.” Zimmerman is widely expected to enter a not guilty plea. O’Mara said he is working on finding a place he could safely stay if he is released before trial. Speaking to reporters after the hearing, O’Mara said he was concerned that the case up until now has been handled largely in the public eye. “It’s really supposed to happen in the courtroom,” O’Mara said, deflecting questions about evidence in the case and his client’s mental state. “He’s tired,” O’Mara said when asked about Zimmerman, who has said he acted in self-defense and that Martin was the aggressor that night. “He’s gone through some tribulations of his own, being the focus of the intensity of this event. He’s facing second degree murder charges now.” “He’s frightened. That would frighten any one of us.”

Trayvon Martin Shooter George Zimmerman Charged With Murder

Zimmerman is now in custody after being charged with murder in the second degree in the Florida teen’s shooting death. By Rob Markman Trayvon Martin Photo: AP After months of public outcry, there was a major break Wednesday (April 11) in the tragic shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin : Triggerman George Zimmerman was charged with murder in the second degree. Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the charges during a press conference in Jacksonville, Florida, just a half-hour after it was reported that Zimmerman turned himself in to authorities. Zimmerman was arrested and now is in an undisclosed location. Martin’s February 26 death sent shockwaves through the nation. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, saw 17-year-old Trayvon walking through his gated community in Sanford, Florida, and immediately grew suspicious of the teen, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. When Zimmerman called 911, police dispatchers advised him not to pursue Martin. By the time police arrived on the scene, Martin was shot dead and Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense, was not arrested or charged with a crime. Trayvon didn’t have a weapon. A week after the shooting, Sanford Police Chief Billy Lee said there was no evidence to dispute Zimmer’s self-defense claim and they couldn’t arrest Zimmerman because he was protected by the so-called “Stand Your Ground” law that allows Florida residents to shoot someone they reasonably believe is threatening them. According to reports, Zimmerman told police Martin punched him in the nose, knocked him down and repeatedly slammed his head into the ground. Since the shooting death, there has been public outrage. Demonstrators took to the streets , and on March 23, President Obama called for an investigation into the incident, saying, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.” The hip-hop community has been particularly vocal, calling for justice for the teen. ?uestlove, Game , Young Jeezy, Nas , Killer Mike and Prodigy all spoke out in protest, while rappers like Plies and Bad Boy’s Los made songs dedicated to Trayvon. What do you think of the second-degree murder charges handed down to George Zimmerman? Let us know in the comments.

It’s About Damn Time: George Zimmerman To Be Charged For Murdering Trayvon Martin

George Zimmerman To Be Charged In Trayvon Martin’s Shooting Death A Florida special prosecutor has decided to charge neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, sources told ABC News. The decision by Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey is expected to be announced at a 6 p.m. news conference in Jacksonville, Fla. The prosecutor’s ruling is certain to provoke controversy in Sanford, Fla., where shooting took place and across the country. Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch captain, shot and killed Martin, who was 17 and black, on Feb. 26 after following the teenager for several minutes. The special prosecutor’s ruling came one day after Zimmerman’s legal team quit because they had lost contact with him, and suggested that the pressure of the case had “pushed him over the edge.” His lawyers said that Zimmerman was no longer in Florida and ABC News has learned that prosecutors do not know his exact location. Earlier this week, Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett said his city has become a “kindling box” due to the high emotions surrounding the case, and that he would “plan for the worst and hope for the best.” R.I.P.
