Florida Young Republicans Stand Behind New Voter Laws

‘I think if you follow the legal means, it’s such an easy process,’ Florida State student Mia Simon tells MTV News By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney Photo: Emmanuel Dunand/ AFP/ Getty Images JACKSONVILLE, Florida — There’s a storm raging in Florida over new voter-registration laws that groups such as Rock the Vote claim make it harder for them to sign up new voters . But ask Florida State University student and first-time voter Mia Simon, 19, about those laws, and the political science major will tell you that it’s much ado about nothing. “I have just turned in my forms to become a registered agent with the supervisor of elections, and that means I go through a legal process of handing out the voter registrations and handing them in myself to the supervisor,” said Simon, who added that it is because of the changes to the voter-registration rules that she was inspired to become more involved with the process. “I think if you follow the legal means, it’s such an easy process to fill them out and then you guarantee that they get to the supervisor of elections,” the FSU College Republicans member said. Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters are among the third-party groups who have sued the state in an effort to get the law overturned. They’ve argued that new provisions that give their organizations just 48 hours to turn in registration forms, the shortening of the early voting period and threats of civil action should the forms not be filled out correctly amount to a breach of their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association even as they fail to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with what they say are the laws’ “confusing and unclear mandates.” Simon said she’s had no problem turning the form in within 48 hours and has found the process “really easy” to follow. “I really think it makes it easier,” she said. “As long as you follow the law, it’s all great.” Considering that she said there are 3.5 million unregistered voters in the state, she is also inspired to get more young voters out to the polls this year and hopes the new laws do what their drafters intended: root out voter fraud. “America stands on the principle of one person, one vote, and this is something that we really need to uphold.” MTV is on the scene in Florida! Chris Cillizza at The Washington Post wrote today that President Obama’s State of the Union had all of the hallmarks of a ” bipartisan, let’s-do-the-right-thing-for-America tone that characterized his 2008 presidential campaign” –albeit with a sharper edge. Long Island Congressman Peter King doesn’t think however that any exhortations from the president are necessary to cure the gridlock–indeed,… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : The Politicker Discovery Date : 25/01/2012 21:33 Number of articles : 2

South Carolina Primary Goes To Newt Gingrich

Mitt Romney had a sizable lead going into the week only to fall short to the onetime House speaker. By Gil Kaufman Newt Gingrich Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images If it weren’t clear before, the results of the South Carolina primary Saturday night (January 21) made it crystal that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is in for the fight of his political life in his quest to nab the Republican presidential nomination . After holding on to a double-digit lead as recently as Tuesday, Romney came up short in South Carolina, defeated by a surging Newt Gingrich. Buoyed by two solid debate appearances this week, former House Speaker Gingrich managed to turn the tide in the first contest in the South, proving once again that the party faithful are not yet willing to fall into lockstep and give Romney a smooth ride to the nomination. Gingrich pulled off the upset victory despite a potentially crushing distraction Thursday in the form of an ABC News interview with his second ex-wife. In it, Marianne Gingrich claimed the ex-congressman had asked her to agree to an open marriage so he could carry on an affair with his now-third wife. Romney started the week with a solid lead, but the distance between him and Gingrich shrunk in the days before the primary. In addition, on Thursday, the race was scrambled thanks to a trio of unforeseen events that further muddied the waters. First, Republican leaders in Iowa announced that the final count in that state’s caucus revealed that Romney’s eight-point win over Rick Santorum was actually a 34-point loss, which handed the former Pennsylvania senator a pyrrhic victory in that first-in-the-nation contest. A short time later, Texas Governor Rick Perry announced he was suspending his campaign and would be throwing his support behind Gingrich, which could solidify the former House leader’s draw to the all-important bloc of Evangelical Christian voters. The third shoe to drop was the ABC interview. By Friday night, a Romney adviser told CNN the race was “real tight,” even as a Gingrich staffer predicted a victory after the candidate came in fourth place in the two previous primaries. Santorum seemed to have secured third place at press time, with Libertarian candidate Congressman Ron Paul at fourth. Before results were announced, CNN reported that exit polls show the most important quality for Republican voters is that a candidate can beat President Obama. Experts told MTV News that if Romney landed his second win in a row, he might take the wind out of Gingrich’s sails and get one step closer to a virtual lock on the nomination should he win the next test, the January 31 primary in Florida. A further black cloud over the Gingrich win for Romney: The winner of the S.C. primary has gone on to secure the Republican nomination in every election since 1980. Long considered the front-runner and likely nominee, Romney has gone from looking like he would win an unprecedented three primaries in a row to start the season to just one victory and continuing questions about his appeal to the party’s conservative base. Though his campaign continues to be far ahead of the rest of the field in fundraising, even if Romney can pull it out, the constant battering of his image and r

Valentine’s Day Showdown: Reese Witherspoon Moved Up, Catherine Zeta-Jones Shipped Direct to DVD

Valentine’s Day is a little less than a month away, and much like you trawling the supermarket for last-minute goodies to romantically rain down on your perennially disappointed significant other, Hollywood has cobbled together not one but two faintly savory last-minute options for the lovers out there. Fox announced late Wednesday that thanks to “outstanding test screenings and strong word of mouth,” it would release the Reese Witherspoon/Tom Hardy/Chris Pine-starring, McG-directed spy-love triangle rom-com This Means War on Feb. 14 proper — a Tuesday, three days ahead of the film’s original Feb. 17 release date. “Starting Valentine’s Day, we’re making WAR, not love,” said distribution boss Bruce Snyder in a statement. “We’re armed and ready with the perfect movie. This is a picture that that has it all – humor, charm, wit and action – and it plays through the roof.” Forsooth! Hath thy loins bestirred? OK, fine. How about this, then: The Catherine Zeta-Jones/Justin Bartha rom-com The Rebound , shot in 2008 at the apex of the whole “cougar” movement. This was the one bankrolled by the defunct studio/distributor The Film Department, on whose shelf it sat domestically for years while doing reasonably well on the international circuit. Now it, too, is under the Fox label, but straight to video, alas. So what could keep a Catherine Zeta-Jones rom-com in limbo all these years? Was No Reservations so bad? What’s it all about? Here’s Fox’s sell (via press release): Upon discovering her husband’s infidelity, Sandy (Zeta-Jones) and her two kids move from the suburbs to pursue a new life in the big city. There she meets Aram (Bartha), a local coffee shop employee whose wife only married him as a means to getting her green card. The two strike up a friendship which eventually evolves into something more. But it isn’t long before they’re faced with the big question – “Is this real or just a rebound?” Arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day and featuring electrifying chemistry between Zeta-Jones and Bartha, The Rebound also features fantastic supporting performances from Lynn Whitfield ( The Women, Madea’s Family Reunion ), John Schneider ( The Dukes of Hazzard, Lake Placid 2 ) and music legend Art Garfunkel. AHEM. John Schneider and Art Garfunkel? Hardy and Pine don’t stand a chance! Neither do you! Just break up already, seriously.

Lana Del Ray Struggles Through Saturday Night Live Performance [Video]

Poor Lana Del Ray. The singer seems perfectly nice, and she clearly has some talent, but the artist was overwhelmed on her Saturday Night Live debut yesterday, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot during a rendition of “Video Games,” randomly rubbing her hip, lacking any and all energy or emotion. Del Ray mumbled in to the microphone and rushed through her lyrics, as the faces of her backup band members even look horrified on her behalf. See the trainwreck for yourself and join us in wishing Lana better luck next time. If there is a next time for her, that is… Lana Del Ray SNL Performance

She’s So Fly: Bootylicious Bug Named Beyonce Because Of Its Blinging Backside

Turns out that Beyonce is not the only species in nature that’s bootylicious Now there’s a horsefly that bears her name thanks to their shared asset. Beyonce may be one of the biggest pop divas out there, but she isn’t the only diva with that name. A previously unnamed species of horse fly with a glamorous golden rear end has been named Beyonce because it is the “all-time diva of flies,” researchers say. Bryan Lessard, a researcher from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, is responsible for officially describing the fly and naming it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae, according to the Australian National Insect Collection. Beyonce isn’t the first celebrity to be honored with her own species. Traditionally named after scientists involved in their discovery, organisms have also been linked to the likes of Harrison Ford, Matt Groening (creator of “The Simpsons”), Mick Jagger and other celebrities, including a beetle named after Roy Orbison. The rare Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae species of horse fly was collected in 1981 (the year that Beyonce was born) together with two other previously unknown specimens from northeast Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands. The singer Beyonce, on the other hand, was a member of the group Destiny’s Child, which recorded the 2001 hit single “Bootylicious.” The fly got its booty-ful name from its extreme diva feature: a big gold butt. “It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyonce as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species,” Lessard said in a statement. Horse flies like the newly named one play an important role in ecology by pollinating plants. “Horse flies act like hummingbirds during the day, drinking nectar from their favorite varieties of grevillea, tea trees and eucalypts,” Lessard said. The Beyonce fly is one of five detailed in Lessard’s paper, published in the online version of the Australian Journal of Entomology in August and announced on Friday. This discovery has doubled the number of known species within the Scaptia (Plinthina) subgenus and extended the known distribution of Scaptia into the Northern Territory and northwestern Australia, where they were not previously thought to exist. “Most Australian Scaptia species have been described, however, these five ‘new’ species of a subgroup (Plinthina) have been housed in Australian collections since the group was last studied in the 1960s,” Lessard said. Apparently, the singer hasn’t had a chance to respond to the news. The CSIRO blog post reads: “News@CSIRO has sought a response from Beyonce about the great honor bestowed upon her but is yet to receive a response. … Beyonce has recently had her first larva, sorry, child, and may be too busy to respond.” Dang. Everybody is drinking the Kool-Aid these days. Even the scientists. Source More On Bossip! Lil Wayne To Release Prison Memoir In November

‘Gone Till November’ will come out two years after Weezy’s release from Rikers Island. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne has a story to tell. Well, Lil Wayne probably has a bunch of stories to tell, but this fall the multiplatinum rap superstar will release “Gone Till November,” his memoir based on the diaries he kept while he was locked up for eight months on Rikers Island in New York. The book, which will come out in November, two years after Weezy’s release from prison, is being described as an internal monologue, according to the Associated Press . It will be released through Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Weezy was freed from Rikers Island on November 4, 2010, after he served eight months of a year-long sentence for an attempted gun possession charge. Police had arrested the rapper in 2007 following his headlining performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Wayne eventually pleaded guilty to the charge and turned himself in to authorities in March of 2010. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway caught up with Wayne in Miami at a welcome-home party just days after his prison release. When asked how his transition from prison was going, Weezy simply responded with a grin. “I forgot about yesterday,” he said after thanking his fans and family for their support. He hasn’t completely forgotten, however, now that Wayne, who has since toured the world and released his double-platinum Tha Carter IV, plans to reminisce a little.
