The convention for The National Association of Black Journalists or NABJ kicks off every year for journalists, students, and media-related professionals. There, folks learn firsthand key strategies in media, socialize professionally, and seek career opportunities. This year it took place in sunny & humid Miami, Florida. Source: @AieshaArab / IG The workshop was hosted by BOSSIP’s deputy editor Danielle Canada who emceed a panel of our viral headline experts on staff, including senior editor Jennifer H. Cunningham, Aiesha Letman (myself), Jason Lee and, Alex Ford. Bruce Wright, managing editor of our fellow Interactive One site News One was also there to assist. In the workshop, our writers were asked the FAQs behind the manufacturing of a standout headline, regardless of the voice of the publication. Attendees learned about the importance of headline writing as it pertains to ideation and creating viral moments. And…when is a headline too far? Jason Lee was there to assist with the latter. Of course, this question was directed at our site, specifically. So, how do we not “cross the line”? What is offensive or ‘racist’ to white folks? Jason says, ‘As far as (mayo), aioli and those sort of things…if white people are offended by certain things, then that’s fine but the dynamic is different. We are a Black site, we are Black people, normally we’re the oppressed people. So, if the worst you have to deal is being called a ‘mayo-packet’ behind somebody who did something racist, something stupid, then in my mind, you kinda have to chalk that.’ New One’s Bruce Wright had an important point to add, saying: ‘I don’t think we should only single out Black media for doing what the original media created and is still doing on now.’ Alex Ford probably in one short sentence gave the crux of what you need to create a viral moment. ‘We’re not just writing these headlines for you to just see them and laugh. If you read some of the posts, their actually well-written, comedically. Also, your use of language. Find that one word that represents what you’re trying to say. Word choice is important. ‘ BOSSIP is proud to be a completely unique voice at the intersection of Black culture, entertainment, and political-awareness. Over the weekend, the world was stunned when Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus separated after only about eight months of marriage. Now, Liam is releasing his first-ever official, solo statement about the breakup. You can tell that he’s still reeling from the split. Their relationship has lasted, off and on, for a full decade. It’s understandable that he’s deep in his feelings. The 29-year-old actor took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message about this incredibly personal, difficult subject. “Hi all,” Liam’s caption begins. “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated,” he confirms. (Wouldn’t it be wild if someone found out from that post and had totally missed the news for the past several days?) “And,” Liam continues. “I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.” Liam goes on to emphasize that “this is a private matter.” “And,” he reveals. “I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets.” Now that is very interesting to hear, as we’ll explain in a moment. “Any reported quotes attributed to me are false,” Liam insists. He then concludes his caption with a warm: “Peace and Love.” That’s interesting, because a report recently claimed that Liam had spoken to an entertainment news correspondent. “You don’t understand what it’s like,” Liam allegedly said to the reporter. He is said to have then insisted: “I don’t want to talk about it, mate.” That sentiment is extremely understandable. But it sounds like Liam is claiming that he never said those words to any journalist. Miley released her own vague statement on social media in the wake of the couple’s separation going public. “Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win,” Miley wrote. She continued: “Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa , change is inevitable.” “The Dolomites were not created over night,” Miley remarks. “it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed.” The Dolomites are, of course, a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. An official rep for the erstwhile couple also released an official statement. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” the statement began. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” the rep continued. “They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share,” the statement affirmed. ‘”While lovingly taking this time apart,” the rep concludec. “Please respect their process and privacy.” Miley and Liam began dating in 2009, and first became engaged only a few years later. Clearly, this is hadly the first time that the two have split — one of their breakups was famously the inspiration for “Wrecking Ball.” Many fans had hoped that their getting married meant that they had worked out any issues, but apparently they hadn’t tackled everything . Miley Cyrus cannot be tamed. This is a narrative that has surrounded the singer for years, ever since she released a track titled “Can’t Be Tamed,” and then proceeded to act the part, thrusting her pelvis around and saying anything and everything that is on her mind. As a result, another narrative has formed around Cyrus in the wake of her stunnning split from Liam Hemsworth . This is clearly all her fault , observers have been saying. She never wanted to be a wife , they argue. She’s admitted to being attracted to women and it was silly to think she would be happy with just one man for the rest of her life . Of course, the allegation that Cyrus was making out with Brody Jenner’s ex-wife, Kaitlynn Carter, just hours before her split from Hemsworth was confirmed hasn’t exactly quieted this accusatory chorus. Are these female stars really dating? Yes, TMZ now reports. But there’s a lot more to this whole story… First, an insider tells the website that Cyrus and Carter did not become any kind of romantic item until after each split from her famous spouse. Second, this same insider tells this same website that Sources connected to Miley was actually the one who really tried to save her marriage to Hemsworth. She suggested the pair attend therapy together and she tried to take many other steps to avoid a separation of divorce. But “he didn’t come close to meeting her half way,” TMZ writes . Interesting, huh? Sort of forces you to see this break-up in another perspective if true, right? Once it became evident that the relationship really had no future, the couple simplt drifted apart — months ago. The aforementioned source says very clearly that this split did NOT come as a surprise to Hemsworth, adding that he and Cyrus grew close to Jenner and Carter after the outbreak of wildfires in Malibu late last year. The foursome grew very close after this disaster tore apart their neighborhood. This is a tad ironic because Liam springing into action in order to save Miley’s animals from this fire is what inspired the artist to want to finally marry him last December, various outlets reported at the time. Alas, the marriage only lasted eight months. In the wake of Miley and Liam’s split, both sides have now issues statements . They read as follows, first from Cyrus: Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win.
