Celebrity Seed Stress: Kimora Lee Simmons’ Ex Djimon Hounsou Files For Joint Custody Of Their 10-Year-Old Son, Kenzo

Source: Patrick McMullan / Getty Kimora Lee Simmons Served With Papers In New Custody Battle Fans have always praised Kimora Lee Simmons for keeping good relationships with all of her exes, but apparently, something took a left turn in her post-relationship relationship with Djimon Hounsou . Back in June on Father’s Day, Djimon complained to paparazzi that he hasn’t been able to see his 10-year-old son in a long time, and now, he’s taking legal action to try and change that. Kimora was served with papers while walking down the street in Beverly Hills on Friday, notifying her that her ex was filing for joint custody of their child, Kenzo. Kimora maintains that Hounsou is just an absent father who rarely wanted to see his son, and that’s the only reason he hasn’t. Hansu’s filings took place on August 1, and indicate that he’s petitioning to establish a parental relationship–a step taken to officially establish who Kenzo’s parents are in the eyes of the law. That might be necessary, since he and Kimora were never legally married. Included in the docs is the fact that Djimon is seeking child support, a custody arrangement with Kimora, along with visitation rights. He is requesting joint joint legal and physical custody between both parents and asks for both parties to have equal time with the child. If the Baby Phat founder is keeping her son from his father, it could be for fear that he might take Kenzo back to Africa with him and never return. Russell Simmons told TMZ that he offered Hounsou a visit with Kenzo just a few days ago, saying that he would take his son to him as long as he signs a document promising not to take the kid to Africa. According to Russell, Djimon refused. View this post on Instagram #Thinkingofyou #KLH A post shared by Djimon Hounsou (@djimon_hounsou) on Jul 20, 2019 at 4:43pm PDT

Oh, HELL NAH: Black Man Finds A KKK Application In The Bedroom Of The Home He Was About To Purchase

Source: SOPA Images / Getty Black Homebuyer Finds A KKK Application In Officer’s Bedroom Rob Mathis was all in and ready to make an offer on a five-bedroom house in Holton, Michigan —that is, until a recent tour of the property. A quick look through the home’s decor didn’t sit well with Mathis and his wife, Reyna. They felt uneasy after finding a NASCAR-decorated garage sporting two Confederate flags, Confederate placemats in the kitchen, and on top of all that—the home also belonged to a police officer. The over-the-top Confederate decor found Mathis wondering to himself, “Wouldn’t it be funny if this was a Klansman’s house?” he revealed in an interview with MLive . Then, he and his son went into a bedroom and saw a framed KKK application mounted on the wall behind a vanity. “Application for citizenship in the invisible empire: Knights of the Klu Klux Klan” the empty application read. Of course, Mathis told his son that they had to leave immediately. Some Confederate flags and a KKK application are reason enough to high tail it out of that house, but unsurprisingly, this isn’t the only incriminating evidence against the police officer whose house Mathis was viewing. Charles Anderson, a 48-year-old white police officer, fatally shot a black man, 23-year-old Julius Johnson, during a traffic stop in 2009. Anderson was cleared of any wrongdoing in Johnson’s death, per the Washington Post . Rob Mathis ended up going public with the frightening information he found throughout Anderson’s home, posting about it to Facebook and talking to local media outlets about the harrowing experience. The City of Muskegon placed the officer on administrative leave on Thursday, “pending a thorough investigation” of the officer. In light of the findings, Eric Hood, president of the Muskegon County chapter of the NAACP, has called for Anderson’s interactions with people of color to be reviewed.

Chicago Nonprofit Aims To Combat Diabetes Within The Black Community

Link:

A frican Americans are disproportionately affected by the growing diabetes epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , Black adults are 80 percent more likely than whites to be diagnosed with diabetes. A new Chicago-based nonprofit is striving to reverse the alarming trend. According to Black News , The Suga Project is creating a space to foster conversations surrounding ways to combat Type 2 diabetes and the overall importance of Black health. The organization—which was founded by Natalie Pauls —was established to provide resources for African Americans who are battling diabetes and for others who want to get involved in addressing the epidemic. Cognizant of the rising numbers of Black folks who are affected by the disease, Pauls wanted to create a platform where they could feel empowered and supported. The Suga Project provides informative courses that teach individuals how to lead healthier lifestyles. “The numbers are startling,” Pauls said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “African Americans are four times more likely to have an amputation due to diabetes complications. African American women are dying at rates greater than any other group of women in history.” The organization’s overarching goal is to see a decrease in the number of diabetes cases within the Black community. Several individuals and organizations are working to spread awareness about diabetes amongst African Americans. Earlier this year actress Viola Davis teamed up with the pharmaceutical company Merck to narrate a documentary titled A Touch of Sugar that captures how the disease is impacting communities across the country. “I’m one of the 84 million American adults living with prediabetes and I’m sharing my story for the first time in an effort to inspire others to take action against the type 2 diabetes epidemic,” she said in a statement about the film. “When you look at the facts, there’s nothing harmless about diabetes – it’s a chronic disease that needs to be taken seriously if we’re going to get it under control.” SEE ALSO: Viola Davis Spreads Awareness About Diabetes Through New Documentary GirlTrek Movement Inspires Black Women To Take Charge Of Their Health [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3459090″ overlay=”true”]

B lack women are breaking racial barriers in higher education. Earlier this month Amber Johnson made history by becoming the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in computer science at Purdue University. Florida State University student Kalisa Villafana  also hit a historic milestone by becoming the first Black woman to graduate from the university with a nuclear physics doctoral degree, WFTS reported. MAKING HISTORY Kalisa Villafana will become Florida State University's first black female graduate to earn a doctoral degree in nuclear physics. https://t.co/r6tIZ89MDw — ABC Action News (@abcactionnews) August 2, 2019 Villafana has always had a passion for STEM. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University and spending a brief stint of time working overseas in Trinidad and Tobago she made the decision to further her education and pursue another degree at FSU. Villafana was aware that her educational journey was something bigger than herself. She wanted to use it as an avenue to inspire individuals from underrepresented groups to enter the STEM field. Outside of excelling academically, she served as a mentor for students of color who aspired to go to graduate school. “In Trinidad, many people don’t know how to get to the United States and get a Ph.D. that’s paid for by the school. They don’t know how to go from being an international student from the islands to a doctor in the U.S.,” she told the news outlet. “Hopefully, they see that they too can be a physicist. You may not see a lot of us, but we’re there. We’re out there.” Villafana—who is now the 96th Black woman in America to hold a Ph.D. in physics—credits her family and friends for providing her with a strong support system. As far as the next step in her career, she will serve as a process engineer at the Intel Corporation. Through the program, organizers will also conduct research on the financial barriers derived from the cost of education and how to overcome them. “The Morehouse College Student Success Program will provide students with a liberating gift that will wipe away or greatly reduce their student loans, allowing them to pursue their dreams and lead lives of leadership and service immediately after graduation,” said Morehouse President David A. Thomas in a statement, according to the news outlet. The college’s Board of Trustees hopes that the program will serve as a blueprint for other historically Black colleges and universities. There is a huge need for programs like the one launched by the HBCU at colleges and universities across the nation. The student loan debt crisis has grown to $1.5 trillion. HBCU students are impacted the most by student loan debt. Research conducted by the United Negro College Fund revealed that 80 percent of HBCU students rely on federal loans to pay for their education.
