Crystal Bowersox’s Hometown Bar Cheers On ‘American Idol’ Favorite

The Village Idiot outside of Toledo falls eerily silent as Crystal sings Sinatra. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: Ray Mickshaw / FOX MAUMEE, Ohio — There was no better place to watch “American Idol” on Tuesday night than the Village Idiot. The high-ceilinged storefront pub in downtown Maumee, Ohio, just outside Toledo, was packed with charter members of Crystal Bowersox Nation for performance night, and they were ready to yell their approval for the standout singer who has put their industrial town on the map. Bellied up to the bar and watching with rapt attention was the orthodontist who saw Crystal when she was 16 and eager to leave town to follow her musical dream in Chicago. “No matter what happens, she’s showing us that no matter where you come from or what you think, you can really make it happen,” said Jeff Bunkers, who fondly recalled Bowersox serenading his office staff with an a cappella tune after an appointment. Behind the bar was her soft-spoken bass player and longtime friend, Frankie May, standing next to Nate Woodward, the Village Idiot cook who said he was so blown away the first time he heard Bowersox on the Idiot’s stage two years ago that he got goose bumps and had to come out of the kitchen to see the person behind the voice. Along with a trio of women who used to come see Bowersox play on the low stage in the former bank’s tall front windows, nearly 100 other friends and strangers gathered to see what the hometown girl would do on Frank Sinatra night. Crisscrossing rows of Christmas lights filled the air above the square-shaped room whose walls are decorated with half a dozen oversized images of the bar’s pig-nosed harlequin mascot, heightening the festive feel on a perfectly clear spring night. “We are here to support Crystal. We love her; we have parties at home every week, but we decided to come out tonight to see her and support her,” said Megan Scott, 29, who took a seat with two friends at a table near the door just moments before the show came on. “I think she’s going to do good [tonight], I think she’s going to win it all,” Amanda Canady said. “Anything she does is amazing. She blows me away every week,” Scott added when asked if Bowersox had what it took to make it on Ol’ Blue Eyes night. Ashley Lieber, 27, lives just a few blocks from the Village Idiot, and she’s been coming to the bar every week to watch Bowersox perform. “Once she starts, it’s just silence, you just get into it more, it makes it more fun than sitting at home,” she explains of why she grabs a primo spot at the bar every Tuesday night. She was expecting nothing less than an “amazing” performance. “She always is. She does a really good job every time. I think she’s the best out of all of them.” Things were pretty tame up until show time, but as soon as the contestants were announced, everyone’s attention turned from their beers to the three flat-screen TVs on the far wall of the bar, bookended on one side by a giant performance picture of Bowersox and on the other by a image of one of the bartenders dressed up as Isaac from “The Love Boat.” When host Ryan Seacrest introduced the contestants the bar — which hosts live music seven nights a week — exploded in applause at the mention of MamaSox. One patron kindly let out an ear-piercing wolf whistle every time the show came back from commercial, just in case Crystal was on. The crowd kept it down (sort of) as the first two performances unfolded. But when it was finally Crystal’s turn, well, you’ve never heard a raucous bar get so deadly silent. Patrons began frantically taking out their phones so they could get ready to record the numbers for their gal as soon as they were given out. When Randy Jackson gave some rather subdued praise, lusty boos rang out, as well as some mild threats of very specific bodily harm. By the time Simon Cowell weighed in with his tepid assessment of Crystal’s take on “Summer Wind,” well, suffice it to say that this crowd wasn’t having it. “She tells ’em what she feels!” yelled one patron after BoSox attempted to explain why she sang the tune the way she did. “She’s the best!” The phones blew up as soon as the show was over, with some patrons going outside to dial with one hand as they talked excitedly about the night’s performance, while others walked into the night absentmindedly hitting redial as they strolled to their cars. “The way that she fights back with the judges, it’s totally her,” Woodward said after Tuesday night’s performance, during which Bowersox had her usual back-and-forth with Cowell. “It’s her personality: take me or leave me. “I think the show makes it look like it’s all Hollywood,” he said of the Sinatra-themed night on which single mom was glammed up in a sparkly black floor-length evening gown with her dreadlocked hair up in a stylized ‘do. “[But] she’s exactly what you see on the show. She’s completely approachable. She’s the nicest person you’ll ever meet in your life.” Related Photos Crystal Bowersox’s ‘American Idol’ Experience

Chely Wright Comes Out, Feels ‘Whole As A Person’

‘I know there are others like me out there that struggle every day,’ singer/songwriter says. By James Montgomery Chely Wright Photo: MTV News Chely Wright has spent most of the past two decades grinding out a living in Nashville, writing hits for other artists, scoring hits of her own, parting ways with her label and striking out as an independent act and, through it all, there have been plenty of highs and lows. But the lowest point by far occurred in early 2006 when Wright, despondent over a breakup and harboring a secret she feared would ruin her career, contemplated suicide. It was then, with absolutely nothing left to lose, that she decided to finally reveal her true self to her closest friends: She was gay. “I made the decision that I finally had to do it because in the early part of 2006, quite frankly, I had a gun in my mouth. I was at my rock bottom and I realized that my situation was likely not unique,” Wright told MTV News on Tuesday (May 4). “I don’t feel that I’m special or unique because I’m a country-music celebrity. I know that coming out for anyone is difficult … stepping forward and talking about something you’ve hidden your whole life is difficult. It was time for me, and I was at my rock bottom, but I had to go there before I could get to here.” And here’s where “here” is: Earlier this week, Wright became the first country musician to step out of the closet, with a story in People magazine . She’s also got a brand-new album — Lifted Off the Ground — and a grippingly honest biography — “Like Me” — that have both just hit stories. It’s been a rather harrowing journey to get to this point, but for the first time in a long time she’s happy and, as she puts it, “whole.” And she’s not about to let this newfound status go to waste. “My main motivation for coming out as a gay woman, the honest truth, is if I didn’t, I will never be whole as a person. That said, if my coming out facilitates ease and understanding for others, young or old, gay or straight, that’s a beautiful bi-product of my truth,” she said. “If it helps a gay person think, ‘You know what? I’m less alone; Chely Wright is just like me,’ great. If it helps a man or woman who thinks I’m great, has bought my records, has seen me on tour, and their young child comes to them and says, ‘Hey mom, hey daddy, I think I’m different, I think I’m like her,’ and if it helps them say, ‘You know what? If our favorite country-music singer is living openly as a homosexual and she seems pretty cool, pretty well-adjusted, pretty happy, let’s listen to our child and let’s be helpful to them,’ then that’s a beautiful thing.” Wright said she avoided revealing her true self to even her closest friends in the industry because of “fear” that everything she’d worked for would be taken away from her — that the phone would stop ringing, that the gigs would dry up. Because, let’s face it, it’s not like there was a whole lot of precedent for what she was thinking about doing. “Well, it speaks volumes that there has never been a country-music artist who has acknowledged his or her homosexuality. There has never been a country-music artist who has had hit records, who has stepped forward and been more than a whisper. I was a whisper for many, many years, and I decided to take my power back,” she said. “I’m proud of who I am, and I don’t want to be a whisper … I think it’s important to acknowledge that there’s some little girl or little boy in Lincoln, Nebraska, playing her guitar, practicing Taylor Swift songs, saying, ‘I want to be a country-music singer,’ but she knows she’s different, [so] let’s take this off the table. She doesn’t have to be the first; I’ll be the first, and perhaps there will be a second, and a third, and by the time that little girl gets to Nashville to try and get a record deal, this won’t be that big an issue.” And now that she’s announced her secret to the world, Wright said she’ll continue speaking out for the rights of other gay men and women — and perhaps, by being proud of herself and her sexuality, she can inspire others to break their silence too. After all, she’s been to the bottom — she knows there’s nowhere to go but up. “I do have a little inner justice-fighter inside of me. There were points in my career where I really did have fantasies of stepping onstage at the CMA awards show and saying, ‘It’s great to be here tonight, and by the way, I’m gay,’ ” Wright said. “I know the struggle, I know there are others like me out there that struggle every day. It’s not lost on me that there are kids in their basements with guns in their mouths … there are kids that are being told that they are in spiritual jeopardy, they are being told they are broken, and I am here to tell them they are exactly as God wants them.”

‘American Idol’ Experts Surprised By Aaron Kelly Elimination

Jim Cantiello and MJ Santilli were sure it would be Casey James’ week to go home. By Gil Kaufman Aaron Kelly performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX After weeks of predicting Aaron Kelly’s demise on “American Idol,” on Wednesday, our experts took a break from suggesting that the 17-year-old was going to be sent home on elimination night. So, of course, after guaranteeing us that it was Casey James who would be on the chopping block , it was finally Aaron’s time to go. ‘Idol’ Season Nine Performances “Well, that didn’t go as planned, but what has during this crazy season of ‘Idol’? ” said MJ Santilli, founder of the “Idol” fansite MJsBigBlog.com . “Casey James’ elimination seemed like a slam dunk — he’d been in the bottom three two weeks prior, he gave a train wreck performance, he’s had several lackluster performances during the finals. It really seemed to be his time to go. But I think Kara’s and Simon’s harsh remarks may have saved Casey. Kara not only told Casey his singing was bad, but she also openly mocked his vocals.?It was pretty insulting, and it may have lit a fire under Casey’s fanbase, compelling them to vote harder. Casual ‘Idol’ fans may have tossed him some pity votes.” Santilli figured on some backlash, but said she underestimated how strong it would be. She also noted that fans were probably motivated by the fact that he was tagged as the pick to click by “Idol”-baiting site VotefortheWorst.com. “Aaron’s unremarkable performance Tuesday night may have lost him some of the casual votes,” she said. “The mommies who voted for him last week may have decided to save poor Casey James instead! I was wrong once again, but it’s all good. If you view the performances over the course of the season, Aaron really deserved the boot.?At least Casey had a couple of memorable performances — ‘Jealous Guy’ and ‘Don’t!’ Aaron has been consistently mediocre all the way through the competition.” Though he too picked it wrong, MTV News’ “Idol in 60 Seconds” speed-reader Jim Cantiello had no quibbles with the result. “I can’t say I’m that surprised that little Aaron Kelly was sent packing,” he said. “Both he and Casey had the worst performances Tuesday night. I did think Casey was a goner only because last week he almost got cut after one of his better moments on the show. So, after Tuesday night’s dismal ‘Blue Skies,’ I thought he was a done deal.” Cantiello agreed with Santilli that the judges’ harsh comments, especially DioGuardi’s barnyard comparisons, probably got James enough sympathy votes to keep him around. “Aaron, meanwhile, got not-so-terrible reviews for his shaky ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ but the lack of drama, both in performance and judging, made him forgettable. Sometimes it pays to be jaw-droppingly terrible (ahem, Casey) rather than shrugworthy mediocre.” What do you think about Aaron’s elimination? Share your thoughts in the comments. Kendra Wilkinson to Exploit Sex Tape Scandal on Reality Show

When we first heard about the Kendra Wilkinson sex tape , we thought it was a publicity scheme cooked up by the attention-starved Playboy centerfold. We know, we know: what a crazy notion! Turns out, there most likely IS a Kendra Wilkinson sex tape. So the large-breasted blonde didn’t conjure up the rumor – she just leaked the video to Vivid Entertainment and is now acting appalled that it may be released. How can we be so sure? Because Kendra will actually film her reaction to this “scandal” for her E! reality show. No, Radar Online confirms , Kendra is NOT actually shooting at the moment. But Wilkinson has summoned the cameras into her home in order to capture the scripted craziness surrounding the video. In a statement, the world’s best-known porn company wrote: “The tape was brought to us by a third party and after consulting with our attorneys, we are confident in our right to distribute it. We’ve been trying to reach Kendra but have so far been unsuccessful.” That may be true. David Boreanaz Thanks Fans, "Will Get Thru This"

Embattled Bones star David Boreanaz is under the gun, but he’ll be alright. “David Boreanaz asked me to express to fans his sincere pain, thanks for support, and determination that his family will ‘get thru this,'” his boss, Hart Hanson, Tweeted. Boreanaz’s mother-in-law is certainly on the side of he and Jaime Bergman patching things up, as well, following revelations that he carried on with another woman. That woman, who has since lawyered up, has Gloria Allred on her side after allegedly demanding money from Boreanaz’s attorney in exchange for keeping quiet. The actor refused to comply and blew the whistle on her, citing extortion. He Bones other women, but Jaime Bergman is standing by her man . “Jaime can see what would happen to the children and the family if they let something like this get a hold of them,” Bergman’s mom, Sue Scallion, told E! News . “They’re not going to give in to it.” The mistress in question is not Rachel Uchitel , who hit it with Boreanaz earlier. Bergman knew about it, and it was harder on her than efforts to “get thru this.” Uchitel denies extorting Boreanaz , even though no one accused her of that, and is expected to hold a press conference soon to deny it even more vehemently. She won’t be talking about Tiger Woods, though, having already received multiple millions of dollars to shut her yap regarding her other, bigger celebrity fling.

Kristen Stewart Says She’s Not ‘Miserable All The Time’

‘Twilight’ star explains to Elle magazine why she often looks uncomfortable on the red carpet. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart on the June cover of Elle Photo: Elle As the “Twilight” publicity machine ramps up again in advance of the June release of “Eclipse,” Kristen Stewart has spoken out again about the difficulty of being in the spotlight, from dealing with paparazzi to contending with overzealous fans to bristling against a public perception that she takes her good fortune for granted. “I hate it when they say I don’t give a sh–, because nobody cares more than I do,” she says in the new issue of Elle magazine. “I’m telling you, I don’t know anybody who does this that gives a sh– more than I do.” But one thing Stewart doesn’t care for are those hectic red carpet premieres — all those screaming photogs, clamoring journalists and forced interactions — that have become the norm for every film she makes. It’s enough to leave her on the verge of tears, she admits. “People say that I’m miserable all the time. It’s not that I’m miserable, it’s just that somebody’s yelling at me,” she said of walking a carpet. “I literally, sometimes, have to keep myself from crying. … It’s a physical reaction to the energy that’s thrown at you.” And she doesn’t just encounter that negative energy at frenzied premieres. The spotlight is on her wherever she goes. “It’s insane!” she said. “Once somebody finds out, you have to get the hell out of wherever you are. People freak out. And the photographers, they’re vicious. They’re mean. They’re like thugs. I don’t event want to drive around by myself anymore. It’s f—ing dangerous. “Somebody knocked on my hotel room door and asked for a light, then said that they were a big fan,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Do you really need me to light your cigarette? How do you know what room I’m in?’ I can’t be by myself, and I like being by myself.” Though she is thrust into the public eye, with people snapping photos and trying to learn every detail of her life, Stewart draws the line when it comes to talking about co-stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. “I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them,” she said. “People say, ‘Just say who you’re dating. Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.’ It’s like, No they won’t! They’ll ask for specifics.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
