‘Star Wars’ Pregnancy Announcement Plus Interview With Dad (The One)

Filed under: Humor , Videos , Movies , The One This geeky couple wanted to announce their twin pregnancy with a bang, so they edited footage from Star Wars to illustrate, as the internet once put it, how babby is formed . I have to admit that I was a little unimpressed until the Millenium Falcon zoomed into the scene with the caption “Kickass Sperm” and shot down some TIE Fighters (aka: “Laws of Nature”). We chatted with the dad, Jeff Hays, about the creation of the video. How did you come up with the idea? My wife and I were almost done with “trying” to have a kid. I’m an editor and graphics artist by trade, so I always like doing stuff like this. Being a giant movie dork, I wanted to use the best “last second heroics” scene to build the analogy. It was between this and the lightning striking the clock tower in Back to the Future . The Death Star trench just seemed funnier. Was your wife totally cool with it or did you have to win her over? She was fine with it. Although she’s not as big a Star Wars nerd as I am, she still loves the original trilogy and was on board from the start. She did lay down the mandate of no Star Wars characters names for the kids though…which did make it into the edit as you can see. What did Grandma and Grandpa think? They seemed to like it…but, honestly, I don’t think it was that much on their radar. They were rather ambivalent about it. How long did it take to put this all together? Took me about 4-5 hours one afternoon. If you end up having another kid, how will you top this? Well, maybe I have to revisit to the Back to the Future idea with the lightning hitting the clock tower. After these first two arrive, though, I may not have much time to make videos in my free time. previously:// Birds Sing ‘The Imperial March’ From ‘Star Wars’ (Video Compilation) Share We get it — you’re busy. Roger Ebert Crowdsources Webby Awards Acceptance Speech

Filed under: News / Politics , Movies Roger Ebert won a Webby award for being Person of the Year. So, instead of coming up with his own 5-word acceptance speech, he asked his Twitter followers to write one for him. The moment after I learned I had been named Person of the Year by the Webby Awards, I remembered that my acceptance speech, in Webby tradition, would have to be limited to exactly five words. This is a mixed blessing. Since after surgery I cannot speak at all, it lessened the degree of my loss. Web 2.0 everybody! Read on for our favorites. “Roger Ebert is movie reviews,” j0d3y ” Post-Twitter, speech is overrated ,” randomsubu “Sans voice, but never silent,” aerogare “Thank you. Fake Science Tumblr Is Doing Science Wrong (And It’s Funny!)

Filed under: Humor , Websites , Science Fake Science is a new Tumblr that proves the Insane Clown Posse were right when they rapped the wise words “I don’t wanna talk to a scientist / y’all muthaf***ers lyin’ and gettin’ me pissed.” The site presents a series of totally preposterous science posters that play on the kind of common science knowledge we picked up from our parents or learned in elementary school. For example, your science teacher told you that counting a tree’s rings tells you how old it is. Fake Science says that counting a tree’s rings tells you how many other trees it’s had sex with. It also tells you that spiders are robots. For these, and more untrustworthy science posters, check out our five favorites after the jump. Everyone knows this popular mnemonic for remembering the planets: Fake Science reminds you that spiders are robots. I believed David Bowie when he said they were from Mars, so this sounds totally plausible to me: This one actually agrees with what you probably learned in science class. Volcanoes are made of vinegar and baking soda: Are you colorblind? I am, according to this very scientific test. It also helped me determine that I have a headache: Now you know what those tree rings really mean. The trees have been knotty (oh god, that pun was terrible, I am so sorry): Share

XKCD’s Color Survey Proves That Nobody Can Spell "Fuchsia"

Filed under: Science Fuscia? Fuschia? Fusha? Turns out that nobody but nobody can spell fuchsia (or “magenta,” as I call it just to be safe), according to a color survey by the author of popular geeky webcomic XKCD . Randall Munroe enlisted his readership to assign names to different colors and posted the very interesting results on his blog. On top of the fuchsia spelling fail, the 220,500 responses revealed some interesting info about the differences between men and women. The top 5 colors that were uniquely overrepresented among women’s choices were: 1. Dusty Teal 2. Blush Pink 3. Dusty Lavender 4. Butter Yellow 5. Dusky Rose Meanwhile, men tended to successfully identify the following colors: 1. Penis 2. Gay 3. WTF 4. Dunno 5. Baige Yes, “baige.” I hereby hang my head in shame on behalf of my gender. Pinball Through the Ages – Vintage Pinball Machines (Videos)

Filed under: Videos , Gaming , Lists The first patent for pinball was granted in 1871 to a Cincinnati-based inventor named Montague Redgrave. The patent was for his ‘Improvements in Bagatelle,’ a table game that dates back to 18th century France, where it was popular in the royal court. Over the next 139 years, pinball saw many peaks and valleys. During the depression, the game satisfied a desire for cheap entertainment and quick profits. Five to seven balls cost a penny and an entire machine cost less than $20. At the peak of pinball popularity, tavern and drug store proprietors were known to recoup their initial investments in a matter of days. Because of its connections to gambling, pinball was banned for large swaths of the 20th century in major metropolitan areas, including New York and LA. Meanwhile, tilt mechanisms, free plays, movies, malt shops and microprocessors ushered in a series of golden ages for the game, resulting in the prized and collectible machines many people know and love today. Long story short, there are some pretty awesome videos of vintage pinball machines on the web. Prediction For Possibility Of Time Travel: Professor Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking Humans might one day be able to construct spaceships capable of such speeds that time on board would slow down. Such a craft could travel thousands of years into the future, reaching distant star systems within the lifetime of its crew, according to Professor Stephen Hawking. He says that “Time travel was once considered scientific heresy and I used to avoid talking about it for fear of being labelled a crank, but these days I’m not so cautious,” in his ongoing series being broadcast on the Discovery channel. Stephen Hawking advises humanity could build a giant “relativistic” spaceship, so called because it would exploit the science set out by Albert Einstein in his theories of relativity. Albert Einstein found that as objects accelerate through space, the rate at which time passes for them slows down. For objects such as cars and aircraft the effect is negligible, but Hawking’s spaceship would exceed 98 percent of the speed of light, when such effects would be extremely powerful. Professor Stephen Hawking says that a ship could theoretically reach speeds of more than 1,000 million km/h, but would have to be built on a huge scale simply to carry all the necessary fuel. He added “It would take six years at full power just to reach these speeds. After the first two years it would reach half light speed and be far outside the solar system. After another two years it would be travelling at 90 percent of the speed of light.” And “After another two years of full thrust the ship would reach full speed, 98 percent of the speed of light, and each day on the ship would be a year on Earth. At such speeds a trip to the edge of the galaxy would take just 80 years for those on board.” Read More Prediction For Possibility Of Time Travel: Professor Stephen Hawking is a post from: Daily World Buzz
