Debate Rages Over Whether Black Women Support Bernie Sanders

Source: Pacific Press / Getty T he lingering question of how much support Bernie Sanders has from Black women voters was exacerbated last week during his appearance at the She the People Presidential Forum in Houston last week. That debate continued in a major way Sunday when one of Sanders’ top campaign staffers, a Black woman, defended the Vermont senator’s appeal to the coveted demographic. But that appeal was uncertain after Sanders, one of eight Democratic White House hopefuls at the event billed as “the first-ever Presidential candidate forum focused on women of color,” was asked about his plan to stem the rise of white nationalism. The Vermont senator’s familiar refrain that he once marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. elicited groans, jeers and boos, suggesting the audience wanted to hear new talking points instead of those from the 2016 election. Former Ohio Sen. Nina Turner , who is Sander’s campaign co-chair, appeared on the AM Joy show on MSNBC Sunday morning and cited statistics to show the senator was support from the vital voting bloc of Black women. . @ninaturner : The @MorningConsult poll shows very clearly that almost half of #BernieSanders ' supporters are of color. He's polling over 50% with women in general. So yes the senator does have a larger vision… #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/dBXMKWslDJ — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 But Joy Reid , host of the show, and Dr. Jason Johnson , another panelist, begged to differ and said Sanders squandered the perfect opportunity for him to bolster his support from Black women voters. They both said Sanders failed to answer the question and instead relied on tired talking points that don’t move the dial on the conversation about white nationalism in America. . @DrJasonJohnson on #ShethePeople : This was Sanders' audience to lose… He got the largest number of cheers when he walked on stage & blew it… He was asked about what he would do about white nationalism… He failed to answer the actual question he was addressed with. #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/z46dT0lfFK — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 Watch the full exchange below. Turner previously blasted the Black women in the audience who booed, saying at a rally the day after the event that the jeers were disrespectful. “In what world when you are sitting on the stage telling folks about your history, and you mention the fact that you were on the March on Washington with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Fort Worth, in what world do people boo that?” she asked the crowd. “That happened to Senator Sanders yesterday, and I’m calling it out. In what world? You don’t boo folks for that. And I don’t care if it was somebody who I didn’t care about their policies, if they stood up with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other heroes and sheroes, we need to shout that out.” Bernie Adviser Nina Turner Blasts Audience From Black Women's Forum for Booing Senator's MLK Comments https://t.co/WAKJrDtx0V pic.twitter.com/x5GgU8Cql1 — Tormund XtopHodor, First of His Name (@tommyxtopher) April 25, 2019 That commentary prompted a response from LaTosha Brown , the co-founder of the elections advocacy group Black Votes Matter. She said that the last thing anyone should be doing was blaming Black women voters. I was disappointed at Bernie’s presentation at #SheThePeople but NOW I’m really getting pissed! Giving an uninspiring talk is one thing but blaming Black women for Sanders’ lack of preparedness, aloofness and poor performance is unacceptable. https://t.co/4yLWXroXAV — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) April 27, 2019 That wasn’t the first time that Sanders has ducked questions about his plans for Black America should he be elected president. Back in February, Sanders was in the middle of a CNN town hall event when a Black woman in the audience asked him about his stance on reparations . But the 77-year-old, who has been a bit iffy (some might say he’s flip-flopped) on the topic, further blurred the lines when he ended his very noncommittal answer by stating, “It depends on what the word means,” he said. His multitude of past racial blunders — remember when he said that white people who didn’t vote for Stacey Abrams “are not necessarily racist” because they felt “uncomfortable” voting for a Black candidate? — have also been far from a good look for Sanders. Nevertheless, Sanders was still in second place in the most recent Democratic presidential nomination poll published by Real Clear Politics. Get Well: Larry King Suffers Third Heart Attack After Going Into Cardiac Arrest

Source: WENN.com / WENN Larry King Suffers Heart Attack Larry King recently had his THIRD heart attack—but he’s doing just fine. The talk show host has apparently been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack after already going into cardiac arrest. The news comes from TMZ who says King suffered a heart attack last Thursday. He’d allegedly been having difficulty breathing for months and was scheduled to check himself into the hospital for an angiogram, an X-ray of his blood vessels. On the exact same day as his scheduled procedure, however, he apparently went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a hospital, where doctors performed an angioplasty and opened up an artery that had collapsed and inserted several stents. Although he was put into the cardiac intensive care unit, TMZ adds that he’s expected to be released today. The 85-year-old already had two heart attacks before. Jay-Z’s ‘B-Sides 2’ Concert Signaled A Night Of Black Excellence, Rat Pack Style

Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation “He Is I And I Am Him” As the Great Young Hov took the stage during his much-anticipated ‘B-Sides 2’ performance at Webster Hall in New York City on Friday, I stood in the crowd surveying what was transpiring before my eyes. The man known as Shawn Carter, and the performer known as Jay-Z had merged to meet on the stage. Like a superhero, we’ve come to know the public facing side of the performer while the man has been kept elusive. But after Friday and as a longtime Jay-Z fan, I felt connected to the duality that his performance represented. Prior to him taking the stage, we were warned by DJ Clark Kent that this would be Jay’s most gritty set to date. He spinned deep cuts that only the most invested rap heads would know, with a heavy emphasis on Kanye West, Dipset and Nas. But what we did not know was that Kent had given us a precursor for what was to come. And it wasn’t so much about the ways he sprouted out the lyrics across his almost 30-year-career in the rap game, it was also about the literal style and execution. Every detail from the glimmering Roc-A-Fella chandelier on the ceiling to Jay-Z’s attire, to his pouring of multiple glasses of champagne to share with the crowd, summoned us back to a time when Black people owned their music, their image and their message, transforming us to what felt like a one-night-only front stage seat at the Cotton Club. And if that was the case then I claim Jay, standing on the stage, embodied the charisma and charm of Sammy Davis Jr. If we are keeping it about Black excellence during that time that would be the only way for me to describe it. “Who You Know Fresher Than Hov, Riddle Me That?” Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation As his accompanying band, 1500 or Nothin’, walked out all dressed in suits, I started to get the feeling that my Cotton Club dreams were coming to fruition. They began playing “The Prelude,” Jay-Z’s opening track on Kingdom Come which signaled his return to rap  for about 15 seconds, until an orange light flickered in the middle of the stage, and there right before us stood Jay-Z. The rapper wore a custom tailored suit styled by June Ambrose with a gold medallion. He also sported a matching headband which cropped his full coiled afro.  The bandana and the suit again represented the duality that Jay-Z and Shawn Carter represent, from where he came, to what the journey laid before us. The nearly three-hour set took us down a path that was not always linear, but over the course of 41 songs, we were in full agreement that the man before us was one of the greatest of all time to ever do it. There was a moment, which has now become internet fodder, where Jay gave a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle with a freestyle verse at the end of “Some How Some Way.” While many took issue with the rapper’s allegiance to capitalism and the use of his word “gentrification” as a call to mobilize Black entrepreneurs to take back their neighborhoods, it also signaled that in the age of the internet, one word phrases and small snippets just didn’t give the moment justice. And while I do believe in keeping our public figures accountable, the brevity of what Friday represented, along with the lyrics to “The Can’t Be Life,” in relation to Nipsey’s life was pitch perfect. “Can’t Touch The Untouchable, Break The Unbreakable” Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Images for Roc Nation Somewhere near “American Dreamin’” the energy shifted and like the inaugural B-Sides concert in 2015, it was made evident that Jay was bringing out a few guests for the ride. And then out walked Nasir Jones, donning a Black tux suit with a floor length leather coat. The two former foes had long since laid their lyrical powers against each other to the side. But to see their chemistry up close was astounding. As the set moved into, “Success,” followed by “The World Is Yours,” there was Jay, rapping Nas’ lyrics alongside the man himself, oftentimes playing the hype man to the iconic Queensbridge emcee. By this time, we knew other special guests would appear, so when Cam’ron Harlem’s very own walked out, it was full hysteria. The two rapped the first few verses of “Welcome To New York City,” until that same orange light singled that yet again another rap pioneer, Jim Jones, was making his entrance onto the stage. Jay again played the background while Cam’ron and Jones, took over as one half of Dipset to perform “I Really Mean It.” By the time Cam’ron and Jones walked off, with Cam’ron visibly emotional, the crowd was in an uproar. But the rest of the journey would not deter to another special guest, it would be a moment for the rapper to spit some of his most personal lyrics including “Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)” and Adnis. After that intimate set Jay and his longtime DJ and confidant Young Guru ran through snippets of deep cuts while Jay rapped off memory to “Show You How,” “LA-LA-LA,” and “I Love the Dough.” By the time the rapper closed out the show, with a jazzy rendition of “Hovi Baby” I knew Jay, the leader of the pack, had achieved exactly what he set out to do.

Director John Singleton To Be Taken Off of Life Support

John Singleton will be taken off of life support today (April 29) according to his family. The renowned director’s family issued a statement confirming the decision. “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” reads the family’s statement, per ABC News . “This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.” It continues, “It is, for us, heartbreaking. We are grateful to his fans, friends and colleagues for the outpouring of love and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.” Seems like all the confusion earlier today about whether or not Singleton was still alive was due to poor communication. He is survived by his mother, Sheila who was also his business manager, his father, Danny and six children. Prayers up to the Singleton family and John Singleton. View this post on Instagram There was a time when I was struggling to pay my bills in film school and not sure this town was for me. And one day, not long after Boyz N The Hood exploded on the scene, my phone rang. It was John Singleton. John did not know me at all. But someone at USC had told him I was talented and he was kindly calling to offer me some words of encouragement. He told me to keep writing. I never forgot it. Praying for him and for his family now. A post shared by Shonda Rhimes (@shondarhimes) on Apr 25, 2019 at 7:36pm PDT — Photo: WENN.com

So I made this movie, and Sab was on the set every day. She knew the whole crew. So at the screening, it was a private screening for the cast and crew, and I just dropped to one knee. It was very nerve-wracking.” Congrats to the lovely couple. RELATED STORIES: Jumped The Broom!
