As you know … Tyga is Chyna’s ex and Soulja Boy and Tyga have had serious beef in 2019 over who had the biggest comeback last year. So, we’re told they both were down to hang out, hook up and piss off their nemesis. Kelly docu-series, but developments in Chicago might change that. A grand jury convened last week after attorney Michael Avenatti produced alleged video evidence of the singer abusing an underage girl. The Blast reports : Sources close to the situation confirmed to The Blast a grand jury was convened last week by the Cook County State’s Attorney Office in Chicago. We’re told the grand jury — comprised of a group of citizens — was formed on the heels of attorney Michael Avenatti delivering a videotape allegedly depicting Kelly engaged in sexual activity with an underage girl. Since the airing of the Lifetime docu-series, “Surviving R. Kelly,” the public has been demanding charges be brought against him, but officials have yet to formally charge the star as they dealt with the hurdles of locating victims and forming a case. However, one of the powers of the Cook County State’s Attorney Office is the ability to assemble a grand jury, which can issue an indictment against a defendant without prosecutors having to present evidence at a preliminary hearing in front of a trial judge and a defense counsel. This is still a developing matter with lead Cook County prosecutor Kim Foxx urging any of Kelly’s victims to come forward and add their names to a potential case against the singer. — Photo: Getty

Just weeks after 18-year-old beauty entrepreneur Zandra Cunningham landed a huge deal with Target, another entrepreneur has inked deals with other national retailers. Lesley Riley , founder of the gourmet baking company Mama Biscuits, will have her products sold at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Whole Foods and other stores, Black News reported. The products that she sells are inspired by her grandmother’s recipes that were passed down through different generations in her family for over a century. Stepping into entrepreneurship was no easy feat for Riley. Like many Black founders she struggled with securing funding for her business. The lack of financial support didn’t deter Riley from making Mama Biscuits a success. She continued her passion for cooking and as word spread about how delicious her biscuits were, she built a demand. Her company is the country’s first gourmet biscuit baking company in the DMV area. “I want to give my customers and future customers the gift of eating our Artisan sweet, savory, gluten-free gourmet biscuits. I ship them all over the United States and would love for each household to experience them,” said Riley in a statement. “I never take anything for granted. No matter what opportunities come your way always remain humble. Opportunities aren’t given to everyone.” Riley also uses her company as an avenue for social good. She donates biscuits to local food pantries that serve the homeless and plans on launching a culinary education program for youth. Riley is slated to appear on In the Kitchen with David on QVC on March 17. The competition—dubbed PITCH BLACK—was created as an avenue to address the obstacles that Black women face when trying to become entrepreneurs, including the lack of access to capital. The competition winners will receive up to $100,000. “We created the New Voices Foundation to provide wrap-around services and ensure that we could meet our entrepreneurs where they are on their individual journeys, whether they need capital or other critical resources such as access or expertise,” Richelieu Dennis , Founder, New Voices Fund, said in a statement. “As we continue to invest in black women, I’m thrilled that we are able to do so via this impactful experience with MVMT50 and Pitch Black. Only through collective efforts will we truly begin to level the field.” The pitch competition is slated to take place at the University of Texas at Austin on March 9. There has been a push to support Black women founders. Last year Arlan Hamilton , founder of the venture capitalist firm Backstage Capital, announced that the company would invest $36 million in the entrepreneurial endeavors of African American women. In the past, the company has teamed up to support several social good initiatives, including Chance the Rapper ’s effort to better Chicago Public Schools and making it easier for Americans to get to polling places by offering free and discounted rides on Election Day. For Black History Month, the ride-sharing app is offering free rides to Black-owned businesses, Black museums and other institutions, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. @Lyft is offering free rides in more than 30 cities this month in celebration of Black History Month. https://t.co/w3LuFvqG0u — WSB Radio (@wsbradio) February 14, 2019 The free rides are being offered in over 30 cities, the news outlet writes. In each city, there are one or more locations where free rides can be taken. Among the participating cities are New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Nashville, Oakland, Philadelphia, Washington, Richmond and others. Passengers can get one free ride for a trip that would cost up to $10. “At Lyft, we believe in recognizing, celebrating, and supporting the contributions of incredible Black women and men throughout history and within our communities today,” read a statement released by the company. “That is why during the month of February, we’ll be providing one free ride up to $10* to Black history museums, memorials, and relevant cultural sites, as well as to Black-owned businesses throughout various communities in which we serve.” This February marks the company’s one-year partnership anniversary with Black Girls CODE. Lyft joined forces with the nonprofit as an avenue to increase racial and gender representation in the tech space. Since the inception of the partnership, they’ve been able to raise over $350,000 for the organization. Black Girls CODE is on a mission to provide tech education resources for 1 million girls by 2040. African-American teachers all across the country have decided to switch from the tradition BHM celebration for something newer, truer and more fun. Although there’s nothing wrong with honoring our forefathers by dressing up as them or reading about the same people — educators these days understand the importance of creativity and fun when it comes to teaching young Black kids about their history. Social media has sparked a trend of teachers decorating their door with Black cultural icons of the past and present, all with the help of a little construction paper. One of the first decorated doors to go viral was Glen Mourning , a 4th grade reading teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Mourning’s life sized door version of Colin Kaepernick had Black Twitter so proud. The sign read, “They didn’t steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects, teachers, entrepreneurs, astronomers, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, etc, and made them slaves. Sincerely, your ancestors.” A photo of Lake Alfred Elementary School teacher Chanique Davis’ classroom door also made its rounds on social media. I mean, who doesn’t want to see features of a young Black girl rocking a tilted crown, natural hair and kente cloth during Black History Month. Davis told Edweek , “In a lot of corporate American settings, they don’t allow such a style. I wanted [my students] to know that this style is to be celebrated—it’s not to be shunned and it’s not anything negative. It’s a beautiful style, and … it’s just like anyone else’s hair: It’s welcomed, it’s celebrated. Since they are learning about the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xs in other settings, I want to be the one to let them know there are people who are currently adding to black history.” Anecia White of Harvest Preparatory School opted for the beautiful Black woman visuals too. She told People magazine “My source of inspiration for the door was every student in my classroom. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day, and I hope to inspire them to continue to learn about themselves.” Only two weeks left of Black History Month. She competed against some of the best track stars in the country. White finished off with a 22.82 sprint, edging out runners from Louisiana State University, Arkansas, and Alabama. After hitting that milestone, she is now ranked No. 1 in the world, the country, and her school’s conference which is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Aside from holding the top spot for the 200m, White is also nationally ranked in 60m and the 60-meter hurdles competition. “She’s special,” Duane Ross , director of track and field programs at North Carolina A&T State University, said in a statement. “She was due to drop something fast. Her training has been going well and she’s hungry to be the best. I knew the race was won once she stepped into the blocks. Her focus and preparation were great this weekend.” Last season, White received NCAA indoor All-American honors for the 60mh competition. “Once I found out I was really surprised and excited at the same time,” she told WFMY . White also shared that she never set out to become a track star. She was interested in dance and it wasn’t until a coach convinced her to try track that she started her athletic journey and fell in love with the sport. “I would tell other runners to stay dedicated, trust your training, and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with positivity, what you give out is what you get.” Black athletes are continuing the tradition of breaking barriers in 2019. Earlier this month, a group of women from Antigua became the first all-Black women’s rowing team to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
