Mainstream Media Needs To Figure Out How To Call Racists Racist

Read more here:

T here are certain rules that journalists have to follow that oftentimes fall at odds with the general public. For instance, I see a lot of frustration when headlines use the word “alleged” for crimes that most people feel are obvious. However, journalists must use the word until a crime is proven in a court of law. The rules of journalism are strict and it largely revolves around the possibility of being sued and facing monetary repercussions. That’s one reason there’s so much attention placed to a news outlet’s stylebook that dictates rules for how it addresses certain topics (as well as what phrases or words they capitalize, etc.). But in this age of normalized nationalism where the president refers to Black and brown nations as “ shithole countries ” and congressmen openly support white supremacy, it’s time that mainstream publications definitively add another word to their stylebooks: racist. Comb through any popular publication and you’ll see something between reluctance to a downright refusal to call someone racist. Even actions fall under this passivity. Just this morning, NBC reportedly sent out a memo discouraging it staff from calling Iowa Rep. Steve King’s remarks – asking why the term “white supremacist” was offensive – racist: “Be careful to avoid characterizing [King’s] remarks as racist. It is ok to attribute to others as in ‘what many are calling racist’ or something like that.” READ MORE: Steve King Is So Racist He Didn’t Even Like Shucking And Jiving Ben Carson While NBC quickly walked back its tone-deaf directive following an immediate backlash on social media, it was, of course, part of a larger trend of media mincing words to prevent appearing controversial or coming off as opinionated in straight news stories. It’s why so many news outlets are also reluctant to use the word “lie” to describe the many times Donald Trump, well, lies, throughout the course of a day. Instead, we get words like “falsehoods” or statements that he’s said something that’s “been disproved.” When it comes to racism, the New York Times and the like would rather say “racially tinged” or “racially charged” instead of outright calling an action racist. Even when the racist action is undeniable, like with Steve King’s comments, every publication seems to fall short of calling the person behind said racist action a racist. 'racially tinged' is when a Klan member washes their robes with other red clothes and everything comes out pink — Swole Porter. (@GeeDee215) January 15, 2019 The problem with the word “racist” is that there’s always deniability on the part of the accused. Nobody calls him or herself a racist so there’s always the possibility of legal action coming towards an outlet that labels a person a such. But that’s a convenient argument. Part – if not most – of the problem comes from so many in the media wanting to appease white bases, fearing a backlash from a fraction of the populace who would be offended by even hinting at using the word “racist.” The fact is, Donald Trump and his political ilk have pushed mainstream discussions of race so far right that the media trying to find a middle ground have consequently caused publications to likewise move in the same direction language-wise. It might have seemed unheard of years ago that the mainstream media would find itself in a position to have to call a sitting president an outright racist. Such an act would have been beyond the bounds of objective journalism. But that’s not the case anymore. Donald Trump has called Mexicans rapists and thieves. He’s sided with white supremacists who murdered a woman in Charlottesville. He’s called for the death penalty for innocent Black people. He’s used the word “shithole” to describe African and Caribbean countries. He continues to disrespect every Black woman reporter who asks him a question. Donald Trump is a racist. And if we can’t call him one then what’s the point of having a journalistic institution that claims to report facts? For some, the idea of a racist is subjective. However, it’s time for publications to empower their reporters with an apparatus to determine what constitutes fair ability to call someone or an act racist. The word “racist” needs to be in every stylebook across the country with clearly defined parameters and if someone meets those parameters then the word should be used. Donald Trump is a racist. Steve King is a racist. The men who marched in Charlottesville are racists. I’m glad that I write for a place that allows me to say that. It’s a disservice to the country that more journalists can’t do the same. David Dennis, Jr. is a writer and adjunct professor of Journalism at Morehouse College. In a now-viral video, an employee from a McDonald’s in Spring Hill, Florida angrily shouted the N-Word from the drive-thru window. You will also see another employee calling the police. You can hear the customer shouting “You just called me a n****r!” and the employee double downs on his statement saying “I don’t give a f**k, n****r!” and continues to use the racial slur.   Wow @McDonalds again?! McDonald's employees repeatedly call a Black customer a N*gger, threaten to beat him, & then call the police to lie that “he threatened to kill the manager.” The third horribly racist event at McDs in the last few months. Why?? pic.twitter.com/maAflLSiPQ — Qasim Rashid, Esq. No word on why the incident took place. This comes off the heels of a  Black Woman defending herself from an attack by a white man at McDonald’s in Florida. Lock Her Up: 71-Year-Old Grandma Marries 17-Year-OId Boy She Met At Her 45-Year-Old Son’s Funeral

Source: Susan Lupton / EyeEm / Getty 71-Year-Old Woman Marries 17-Year-Old Boy She Met At Son’s Funeral Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people? Almeda and Gary Hardwick were married in 2016 when they were 71-years-old and 17-years-old respectively according to NYPost . The couple met at the funeral for Almeda’s 45-year-old son Robert. Weird enough for ya yet? If not, get a load of this… Gary met and married Almeda while attempting to escape a relationship with a 77-year-old woman that he had been dating. “We were always fighting,’ said Gary. “I fell into depression and was looking for a way out.” Almeda was previously married but her husband of 43-years died in 2013 and she’s been looking for a lil’ spark in her life and in her loins: Almeda said: “I’d noticed this young man with a lovely smile during the service and thought, ‘Wow, this is the one.’” “He was on the other side of the church, but I kept looking over at him. It was like a bright light through the grief. “Then, as I was walking to the door at the end, he came over and passed on his condolences. We didn’t have much time, but it was enough.” We’re sure that Almeda isn’t the first person to feel lust during a funeral but that doesn’t make it any less weird. Especially when the object of her lust is barely old enough to drive. She recalled: “I just came out with it and said to him, ‘Look, I’m 71 and you’re 17. Am I too old for you?’ He squeezed my hand, grinned and replied: “Age is just a number.”’ We feel like we need a long hot shower. The couple had sex for the first time on their wedding night and previously described each other as “wonderful lovers.” “It was wonderful, beyond my wildest dreams,” revealed Gary. “She really is my dream woman and the physical side of our relationship couldn’t be better.” Throw all these people away.

Rihanna Suing Her Dad, Kanye’s Cousin Stealing His Laptop, & More Celebs Who’ve Been Through Some Ugly Family Feuds

Source: Derrick Salters/WENN.com / WENN Rihanna has never had the closest relationship with her father, and it looks like things are just heading more downhill for the Fenty family. News broke today that the makeup and music mogul is suing her dad, Ronald Fenty, along with his company called Fenty Entertainment, for exploiting her name for his own gains. According to court docs , Rih claims that her father created the entertainment company and has been soliciting business acting as agents of the singer. Rihanna claims that her father booked a $15 million tour in Latin America and two concerts at the Staples Center in LA and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for $400,000, for which she says she has no involvement in. Rihanna, who has multiple business endeavors under the Fenty name including Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty, and Fenty PUMA, says she sent several cease and desist letters to her father and his partner, but is now suing him as a last resort. Even though suing your father seems harsh, Rihanna isn’t the only celebrity that’s had to handle some tough situations against family members. Here’s a list of some more celebrities that got an unfortunately close look at how money–and a lot of other things–can make family turn into foes. 1. Kanye West VS. His Cousin Kanye West hasn’t been quiet about having to pay his cousin $250,000 for a laptop–in songs alone, he mentions the situation more than once. He first addresses the scenario in “Real Friends,” basically admitting that his cousin extorted him with some adult videos on his laptop. “ I had a cousin that stole my laptop that I was f***in’ bi***es on  Paid that n***a 250 thousand just to get it from him” On the same album, on “No More Parties In LA,” West makes it known that he has no hard feelings toward his cousin even after having to give him a quarter million. “And as far as real friends, tell all my cousins I love ’em  Even the one that stole the laptop, you dirty motherf***er” Well, not exactly no hard feelings. But the love is still there, because they’re family. 2. Jay-Z VS. Solange Not exactly a fight over money, but like Beyonce says, “of course sometimes s**t go down. When it’s a billion dollars on an elevator.” Legend says that Solange was being protective of her sister and came at Jay-Z after his cheating allegations came to light–but of course, that information isn’t going to make it out of the Knowles-Carter household. One thing’s for sure: Bey wasn’t doing anything to stop her sister from throwing some punches, so it’s a pretty good assumption that Solange was stepping up on her sister’s behalf. Hov actually spoke on the infamous elevator fight on the Rap Radar podcast back in 2017, but he didn’t elaborate on the cause. He explained: “We had one disagreement ever. Before and after, we’ve been cool. She’s like my sister. I will protect her. That’s my sister, not my sister-in-law. My sister. Period.” Nobody wins when the family feuds. 3. Kobe Bryant VS. His Parents It’s not surprising that multiple celebs have had to deal with family members trying to capitalize off their success–and Kobe Bryant knows exactly what that is like. The former Lakers star had such a big problem with his parents auctioning off valuable memorabilia they kept at his house that he decided to take them to court. They finally reached a settlement which allowed his parents to auction only six of the items, which was 10% of the original listing–which would still sell for more than $500,000. The items included items such as Kobe’s old school uniforms and replicas of NBA championship rings he had made for his parents as gifts. They were given $450,000 up front for the sale lot from Goldin Auctions, which they then used to buy a house in Las Vegas. After the settlement, both his parents made a public statement as an apology to fans and their son. 4. Frank Ocean VS. His Dad Frank Ocean’s situation with family lawsuits is a little bit different than the rest on the list–because the star is actually the one being sued. The singer’s father, Calvin Cooksey, sued Ocean for libel and is currently seeking $14 million. The whole thing started when the singer told a not-so-flattering story about his father in  a Tumblr post . “I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a f****t as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.” Frank’s father denies that this exchange ever happened. “I have never discriminated against anyone transgender or heterosexual or homosexual,” he  wrote to Rolling Stone . “The events that defendant describes on June 21st 2016, that I called a transgender waitress F****T NEVER HAPPENED … The defendant is a scam artist, a fraud and a hypocrite who deceive[d] the LGBT community.” This lawsuit between Frank and his dad is still ongoing. 5. The Kardashians VS. Their Stepmom Even though family feuds are pretty tough to imagine, it’s a lot easier to see how a family would have a poor relationship with one of their step-parents. Ellen Kardashian was married to Robert Kardashian Sr. before his untimely death, so she had personal items belonging to the Kardashian children–which included their personal journals and private photos. The family ended up later suing her for copyright  over these items and wanted $500,000 in damages because they claimed she hid them. The family ended up settling in 2014 while the diaries and photos were returned to the Kardashians.

5 Realizations When You Learn An Egg Is The Most Liked Pic On Instagram EVER

Source: Banar Fil Ardhi / EyeEm / Getty When a picture of an egg gets over 40 million likes on Instagram, one could start to reflect on the meaning of life. Of course, I’m talking about the curvaceous brown item that was determined to break an Instagram record this month. If you haven’t been up to speed, an account with the IG handle @world_record_egg  was started in early January and it appears its sole purpose was to top a record set by Kylie Jenner . According to Time , back in 2018, she set the record for the most liked Instagram post when she posted a picture of her newborn daughter Stormi in February. The picture racked up over 18 million likes, making Kylie a world record holder. But one audacious egg had other plans. The account @world_record_egg posted a picture of a basic brown egg on January 4 with the caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”   The Internet show up and showed out. According to The New York Times , by Sunday, January 13,  the egg photo had surpassed Kylie’s record and as of Tuesday, January 15, the photo has been liked over 42 MILLION TIMES. Kylie was mad. She jokingly posted a clip of herself cracking a brown egg on IG.   According to Time , the egg is the first non-human to break into Instagram’s top 20 most popular posts. The breakfast item has even inspired imitators, with a non-related Twitter account called  @ egg_rt_record  trying to break the record for most retweets ever (the current record holder is Yusaku Maezawa who has over 5 million retweets). Then, of course, the IG egg also inspired some parodies… famous album covers but with the world record instagram egg pic.twitter.com/XujK8gxFIw — Pigeons & Planes (@PigsAndPlans) January 14, 2019   A lot of existential conclusions can be made from this popular egg.
