Officials Warn That Skin Lightening Creams ‘Should Be Avoided At All Cost’

Go here to see the original:

Source: Dann Tardif / Dann Tardif While skin bleaching is a billion-dollar industry, the World Health Organization and other organizations want everyone to put down those “toxic” creams and to “[avoid them] at all costs.” While the WHO claims that these creams are not only high in mercury, the UK’s Local Government Association reported that they “act like paint stripper and increase the risk of cancer.” “Hydroquinone can remove the top layer of skin, increasing the risk of skin cancer and cause fatal liver and kidney damage,” the LGA found. “Mercury can cause similar life-threatening health problems.” According to CNN , these creams also are linked to depression, bacterial and fungal infections, and anxiety. While in the U.S. the products aren’t banned, in the UK those with harmful ingredients are, but officials in Britain have noticed an influx of illegal products being sold at local markets, which is sparking a potential health crisis. “Skin creams containing banned ingredients are very dangerous and could seriously damage your health, scar you for life and even kill you, so they should be avoided at all costs,” said Blackpool Councilor Simon Blackburn in the press release. But it’s important to point out that this issue isn’t just a UK issue. See, skin bleaching is an estimated 20 billion dollar industry around the world, being especially popular in African, Asian and Caribbean countries.  According to Business Insider , 70 percent of women in Nigeria alone are using a lightening product. Colorism is real. This warning isn’t the only time skin bleaching creams have made recent headlines. Last week, two Japanese comedians joked that tennis star Naomi Osaka , who is both Haitian and Japanese, should bleach her skin because she’s too dark. When folks got wind of this, they dragged the duo on social media and sparked an apology from them later. Osaka’s response? “‘Too sunburned’ lol that’s wild. Little did they know, with Shiseido anessa perfect uv sunscreen I never get sunburned,” she posted . “Too sunburned” lol that’s wild. Source: Jinna van Ringen Photography / Getty Homeless Singer In LA Gets The Help And Support Of Hundreds Of People Online California has more homeless people than any other state in the country, according to a statistic from the Los Angles Times — and if you’ve ever roamed the streets of Southern California, you’re probably not surprised to hear that. It’s hard to say what brought each and every person into a situation that led them to being homeless, but a lot of people in this situation are subjected to homelessness because of unforeseen circumstances that simply knocked them off their feet. A lot of Californians are understanding of the unfortunate situations that can so easily leave someone living on the streets, and because of this, the public is now rallying behind one musician in Los Angeles to help her get back on her feet. The LAPD sent out a tweet which features a homeless woman singing opera in a train station last week. “4 million people call LA home. 4 million stories. 4 million voices,” they wrote. “Sometimes you just have to stop and listen to one, to hear something beautiful.” So many people were moved by her rendition of Giacomo Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro” that the tweet ended up going viral, which of course prompted viewers to find out her identity in an effort to help. 4 million people call LA home. 4 million stories. 4 million voices…sometimes you just have to stop and listen to one, to hear something beautiful. pic.twitter.com/VzlmA0c6jX — LAPD HQ (@LAPDHQ) September 27, 2019 The woman in the video is 52-year-old Emily Zamourka, according to reports from Yahoo News . The very talented woman reportedly moved to America from Russia 28 years ago and is a trained pianist and violinist who taught lessons to others before suffering a serious health condition. Zamourka always worked several jobs to make ends meet, but once her instruments were stolen, medical bills surrounding her condition started to pile up, and that’s what forced her into homelessness. “I am sleeping actually on the cardboard right now, in the parking lot,” she told the ABC 7 . “I am sleeping where I can sleep…I have people that feel sorry for me, but I don’t want to be a burden to anybody.” After hearing Zamourka’s heartbreaking story, a person named David Tweet organized a GoFundMe page where he collected donations for the woman. Currently, the page has amassed over $28,000 in just two days. The organizer is hoping to generate a total of $75,000 to help Zamourka return to her life and get back into making music.

TRIED IT: This Pre-Shampoo Is The Perfect Detangler For Sensitive Scalps

See more here:

Source: African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo / Courtesy of African Pride If you have a sensitive scalp or extremely dirty hair from just taking down your protective style, you might benefit from a pre-shampoo. A pre-shampoo helps to soften and moisturize your hair before you put shampoo on it. They also help to minimize breakage by increasing elasticity. If you have a lot of product build up it will help loosen and cleanse your hair prior to your shampoo. I was getting ready to put my hair in a protective style, so I wanted to give my hair maximum nutrients. My hair had been in a natural afro for the week, making it a bit rough. The pre-shampoo helps soften the hair. I tried African Pride Moisture Miracle Aloe and Coconut Water Pre-Shampoo ($6.85, walmart.com ). Aloe is great for your hair as it acts as a conditioner and also contains proteolytic enzymes which repairs dead skin cells on the scalp, promoting healthy cell turnover. It also promotes hair growth, which I’m here for. Coconut water is incredibly hydrating and prevents breakage. This is great for when your hair is a bit sensitive. I sectioned my hair in four, then sectioned each section in two (in a layered type of way). I applied the product directly to my dry hair. At first, I didn’t love it. It has a jelly like consistency. However, once I started shingling and really working the product into my hair, my hair started thriving! I finger combed through my hair with the product. My curl pattern was fully defined, my hair was soaking up the product. I borderline considered using this for my wash and go in the future. That’s how much I enjoyed the way my curls looked and my hair felt. After 45 minutes, my hair was soft, supple, and easy to work through with my fingers. This product was great for my pre-shampoo routine and I’ll definitely be using it again. Best part, it’s under $7.00! I love an affordable product that works. Beauties, do you do pre-shampoos? If so, which one are your favorites? Share in the comment section. Billy Porter’s Protégé Mykal Kilgore Makes R&B Debut With ‘A Man Born Black’

Originally posted here:

Source: Ambe Williams / Ambe Williams Mykal Kilgore has the kind of voice that makes you shout during Sunday service. The tone of it is rich and soulful and with ease, he transitions through rifts and runs making any song he sings a melodic experience; an effortless talent he honed performing in the church choir as a youth. Kilgore gained the confidence to follow his dreams while entertaining a group of classmates, one day, in school. “I would sing with my friends at lunch and one day a group of ‘cool guys’ came over and demanded me to sing them something. I started singing Killing Me Softly and they went crazy,” he explained. He felt “accepted and special.” “I also saw that there was something to singing that makes everybody come together. I wanted to be a part of bringing folks together.” Under the tutelage of Pose star Billy Porter , the Florida native eventually moved to New York where he pursued a career on Broadway ( Motown the Musical ,  The Book of Mormon , Hair). While Mykal thrived on stage, his passion for singing was bursting at the seams. He released his debut R&B album A Man Born Black on September 6. “I wanted to do something audaciously authentic,” says Kilgore. “I didn’t want to release music until I knew I had something clear to say. I’m so secure in my point of view right now.” The 10-track body of work, according to his website, “is an exploration of faith, loss, the stumble and spills on the way to maturity, and the beauty of hope and love.” The freshman debut showcases Kilgore’s songwriting ability while serving as an ode to the classic R&B structure. Produced by Jamison Ross, A Man Born Black embodies sounds from beloved artists like Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Sade and Laila Hathaway. “My hope was that if I could be real about my life and my story through the writing that it would make the song relatable to all people,” he explains. “There are basic things that I want and I use the album to explore these things. I want more love in the world, more respect, more honesty, and more grace.” Kilgore describes A Man Born Black as his “baby.” He laughs when asks what song is his favorite. “You’re making me pick my favorite child?! I think Let Me Go is the song I find myself humming in the shower these days, but maybe by the time I shower tomorrow it’ll be My Heart! I love Let Me Go , because it grows with me everyday. It changes and matures with each listen.” Kilgore set out to give fans an experience that evokes an array of emotions. “ I want fans to feel respected when they listen,’ he says. “I give them my best and that means that the music, the lyrics, the vocals all work together to give an experience that warrants multiple listens, tears, hand claps, toe taps, and their LOVE! I want all of that.” Listen to A Man Born Born Black , here. Felicia Leatherwood Shares Why You’re Type 4 Hair Wash And Go Isn’t Turning Out Well

Continued here:

View this post on Instagram S U N D A E S E R M O N Nothing better than a Sunday in Harlem. : @keyairakelly A post shared by Nashipae Wanjira | Danielle J. (@theislandiva) on Aug 11, 2019 at 2:45pm PDT Wash and go’s have been my go-to for the summer. It allows me to bring moisture to my hair and in this hot weather, the last thing I want to do is weigh it down with a wig or weave. Many Type 4 women stray away from wash and go’s because of lack of curl definition and most importantly, shrinkage. Felicia Leatherwood stopped by Hello Beautiful to share details on how to achieve a wash and go that will turn heads! First off: there is nothing quick about this style. Leatherwood warned, “It’s gonna take at least 30 minutes.” So this isn’t the style to try when you are running late for work in the morning. The problem is that most naturals, when doing a wash and go, they just slap the product on top of the hair. Leatherwood shared, “The most important part is the sectioning of the hair.” Most naturals aren’t taking the time to section their hair in the shower and apply their products correctly. Leatherwood continued, “The outcome of the style is the sectioning and the hydration of the hair.” If sectioning seems tedious, don’t fret, Leatherwood educated, “If you section your hair from the front to the back and then ear to ear, you will move through it so quick!” Section your hair in four first, then divide each section. Beauties, you MUST section the hair or else you will miss hair. Leatherwood continued, “When you divide it (your hair) into fours, I like to do the shingling method.” She shared, “Imagine if you’re gonna flat iron your hair with the fingers. No matter what your texture, 3 or 4, your hair will start to form to it’s true texture.” Not all products work for Type 4 hair, “If you use a product that sits on top and it’s not penetrating, that product may not be the product for you. It needs to melt into the hair, especially if you have water, it should go easily into the hair.” Leatherwood revealed another wash and go tip. While you do want your hair completely drenched, “Have a t-shirt to help dab your ends.” Why a t-shirt over a towel? “A towel is meant to extract water. A t-shirt is made to insulate you. Then use your diffuser!” Beauties, do you have a must know tip for your Type 4 wash and go? Share in the comment section! #EbonyOwes Saga Continues, Former Employees File 2nd Class Action Lawsuit For Their Dough

Go here to read the rest:

Source: WENN / WENN Iconic African-American magazine Ebony is back in the news after former employees accuse the publication of unpaid wages and fraud. According to The Root , the historic publication is once again headed back to court after former employees claimed that they were unpaid for work, laid off unfairly and that their 401k was not company-matched per the employment agreement. The complaint, which was filed on Wednesday (Sept. 25), names Ebony Media Operations LLC; CVG Group LLC; Michael Gibson, CVG Group co-founder and chairman; and Elizabeth Burnett, vice president of operations of CVG Group, as defendants and accuses them of “betraying the magazine’s employees and readers” by “engaging in a consistent pattern and practice of laying off their staff and failing to pay them their final wages.” Additionally, Ebony is accused of failing to reimburse employees for work-related expenses or pay out their unused vacation days. The lawsuit also alleges that Ebony committed fraud by failing to match 401k contributions, in addition to failing to reimburse employees for payroll deductions that were never actually invested into 401k accounts. The lawsuit comes just one week after Linda Johnson-Rice , daughter of the magazine’s founder decided to step down effective immediately from the magazine’s board claiming that the direction of the magazine did not go according to what she had envisioned. “When I agreed to continue on with the companies after the sale to the CVG Group, I did so hopeful that the Ebony and Jet brands would continue to be a dominant and positive force in the African American community,” Johnson Rice said in the email obtained by the Chicago Tribune . “Obviously, despite my hopes, the last three years did not result in what I envisioned when the transition occurred, and because of that, I have made the decision to move on.” Although the reasoning behind the resignation is unclear, what is clear is that the publication has been having staffing and legal issues since the company was bought by Texas investment group CVG in 2016. As previously reported, in 2017 freelancers and former employees started the viral hashtag #EbonyOwes before filing a lawsuit for unpaid wages. The employees were awarded nearly $80,000 in 2018 and Ebony laid off its entire digital staff before going on a print hiatus in the Spring of this year.
