Y esterday, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted executive clemency to 11 people and none of them was Cyntoia Brown . In a news release, he said, “I am pleased to grant these acts of clemency. These individuals have made positive contributions to their communities and deserve pardons, or are individuals who will receive another chance to become contributing members of society by virtue of their commutations.” See Also: Mia Love Whines People Don’t Like Her Because She’s Black, Not Because She Supported A Racist Cyntoia Brown was 16 years old in 2004 when she shot and killed Johnny Mitchell Allen , 43, in self-defense. She thought he was reaching for a gun after he solicited her for sex. Prosecutors argued she wanted to rob Allen, not defend herself. After being tried as an adult, Brown was convicted of first-degree murder in 2006. Due to outrage on social media, and attention from Rihanna and Kim Kardashian, her story went viral. The case eventually made it to the Tennessee Supreme Court due to the work not from celebrities but prison reform advocates. On Dec. 8, CNN.com reported, “On Thursday the court said defendants like Cyntoia Brown, who are convicted of first-degree murder committed after July 1, 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment, can’t become eligible for release from prison before serving more than five decades. The court’s five justices were unanimous in their decision against Brown.” The Tennessee Supreme Court explained their ruling in a statement that read in part “under state law, a life sentence is a determinate sentence of 60 years. However, the sixty-year sentence can be reduced by up to 15 percent, or 9 years, by earning various sentence credits.” Brown’s case is pending judgment in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, but Haslam could have been the one to give her a second chance. Source: Tupac Shakur 1996 MTV Music Awards Featuring: Tupac Shakur Where: New York City, Nevada, United States When: 04 Sep 1996 Credit: Chris Connor / WENN The story behind 2Pac’s infamous night at New York City’s Quad Studios has gotten even more interesting. Makaveli’s friend is now accused of setting him up. As spotted on HipHopDX (Riker’s Island isn’t a state prison by the way) Dexter Isaac alleges that Pac’s one time ally orchestrated the hit which left “I Get Around” rapper shot five times. In a recent interview with Gully TV he reveals Live Squad member Randy “Stretch” Walker was paid by Jimmy Henchmen for his participation. “Stretch set the whole thing up. He was in cahoots and was giving us the play-by-play” he asserted in the audio clip. “He was in communication with Jimmy [Henchman] who had promised him a quarter brick of cocaine.” Later in the interview he also says he approached Walter “King Tut” Johnson for lying that he took part in the robbery. “We sat down and talked and he couldn’t answer. What jewelry was taken m*****f*****, describe the jewelry, what was taken? How did it go down? And this m*****f***** couldn’t say s***.” On November 30, 1994 while entering the lobby of the facility Tupac was robbed and shot by three men. It should be noted that Stretch was with Tupac but was not armed and therefore could not intervene. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. The next day he checked himself out of the hospital against doctor’s orders. He then showed up court in a wheelchair to receive his sentencing for the sexual assault case. In an interview with Vibe Shakur would later point blame at Notorious B.I.G. and Diddy for letting him walk into certain doom since they were recording there that night too. Later he would hint at Jimmy Henchman’s involvement on “Against All Odds”. Additionally it is widely believed Stretch was addressed on “Holla At Me” for his betrayal. “How could you do me like that? / I took your family in / I put some cash in your pocket / Made you a man again / And now you let the fear put your ass in a place / Complicated to escape, it’s a fools fate / Without your word, you’re a shell of a man /I lost respect for you ni*** / We can never be friends.” Ironically Stretch was killed in a drive by shooting a year to the date of the Quad Studios incident fueling rumors that the slaying was payback for being conspirator in the sneak attack. In 2011 Dexter Isaac confessed to the robbery claiming Jimmy Henchmen paid him $2,500 dollars for the hit. You can listen to the interview below where he also describes the jewelry taken from Tupac. Over the last two years one of America’s favorite professional sports league, the NFL hasn’t been able to please some of it’s people of color. After Colin Kaepernick kneeled to highlight police brutality against people of color and never got hired people vowed boycott the NFL. Well that boycott has ran deep for many celebrities. Allegedly the NFL asked Rihanna to perform at the Super Bowl but she declined due to the Kaepernick/ kneeling controversy. Apparently the NFL struggled to find someone after asking Rihanna because most artists didn’t want any parts of the controversy. The NFL finally got Maroon 5 to commit to the big game but they need special guests to appear during the set. Well it’s official rapper Travis Scott has signed on to join the pop group on the main stage. While social media didn’t like his choice, rapper Meek Mill took to twitter to give his opinion: For what???? https://t.co/oTZ4PsDqcD — Meek Mill (@MeekMill) December 20, 2018 All though Meek said it’s all love, he said for what? Source: Joseph Okpako / Getty Just when you thought your Christmas spirit was on ten, it’s nothing like a stroll through the neighborhood that can put things into perspective. Some people go all the way out with their holiday energy. Christmas lights are one way neighbors can uplift a cold winter, whether wrapped around big houses or spread across apartment doors. Some people even go an extra mile to make sure their luminous design is noticed. Christmas lights paired with popular music has become an increasing trend, especially in our viral social media era. While lights of the past might be designed to “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” now lights are getting a more turnt approach. High school student Hudson Hooper is one example of a light aficionado pairing his designs with popular music. He programmed his house’s Christmas lights to Travis Scott songs this year and the results were…well…lit. He arranged a medley of Scott’s biggest bangers, including, “A-Team,” “Don’t Play,” “Antidote,” “Beibs In the Trap,” “Through The Late Night,” “Pick Up the Phone,” “Goosebumps,” “Stargazing,” “Sicko Mode,” and “Yosemite.” Check out the heat below. Hooper told Fox42 , “I just started doing Christmas lights a couple years ago and I’ve been making them bigger and bigger every year. Last year, I got the box that makes that lights go to the music and that’s been my favorite things so far.” Hooper said he spent more than six hours making sure the light-music coordination was tight. Luckily, he had practice before his big Travis showcase. A few weeks before, he set up lights to Drake ‘s “Pound Cake” and Childish Gambino ‘s “Redbone.” Hooper’s latest work involves none other than Frank Ocean ‘s reflective “Nights.” Surely, the neighborhood was never the same. A similar designer popped up last year in Texas when spectators witness the legendary flow of Houston rap artists. IT Manager Frankie To-ong turned out to be the brains behind the show and he used his 20 years experience mixing music in the clubs to created the trill spectacle above. His medley included “Tops Drop” by Fat Pat , “Southside” by Lil’ Keke, “25 Lighters” by DJ DMD, Fat Pat and Lil’ Keke, “Grillz” by Nelly and Paul Wall, and “Down South” by Mista Madd, Slim Thug and Yungstar. To-ong’s epic light show caught so much attention that Paul Wall even visited him to show love. Hopefully, with people like Hooper and To-ong, a precedent can be set for a hip hop Christmas light competition? Only time will tell. Until then, you can hit the next pages for more amazing light shows sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
