‘Dirty Tricks’: Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines

Read the original:

G eorgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp  stooped to a new low, even for him, in his ongoing efforts to keep Black people from voting for Stacey Abrams , the Black woman running against him for governor. Voting machines, which fall under the responsibility of the secretary of state, were delivered to majority Black precincts without any cords to provide them with electrical power for voters to cast their ballots. Kemp’s “dirty tricks” caused delays of up to four hours at polling places where hundreds of voters at a time were left waiting. See Also: Coincidence? Black People In Georgia Typically Get The Oldest Voting Machines, Increasing Chances Of Error “Brian Kemp is playing in the game and he’s also the referee!”  Rashad Robins , president of the racial justice group Color of Change, told NewsOne Tuesday afternoon. “The word we’re hearing is about suppression and dirty tricks, long lines and broken down polling places.” Kemp, who has President Donald Trump ’s endorsement, oversees the election system. He’s also been on the receiving end of multiple federal lawsuits over his attempts to suppress Black votes. They range for rejecting certain absentee ballots , blocking approximately 53,000 voter registration forms and purging some 700,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls—all targeting African-American voters. Here are just a few of the reports that flooded social media about suppression in Georgia. No power cords for voting machines in African American majority neighborhood in Georgia. This is a disgrace. I don’t believe in coincidences. Everyone should assume this is all orchestrated by Kemp. SMH! @tomreganWSB pic.twitter.com/YTXdXLAHzG — Everything Georgia (@GAFolIowers) November 6, 2018 Many of the reported problems apparently stemmed from old, decrepit voting machines that are concentrated in poor communities. “The counties and cities with the fewest resources are voting on the oldest equipment that tend to have the most problems,”  Edgardo Cortés , an election security advisor at the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, confirmed to NewsOne during an interview on Monday. Kemp and Abrams were locked in a neck-and-neck race. Abrams has the chance to become the nation’s first African-American woman governor—in a red state that has not elected a Democratic governor in two decades. “Stacey Abrams’ opponents recognize that the only way they could win—when our folks are fired up—is to suppress the vote,” Robinson, of Color of Change said. “What I do think is really exciting is that folks, in the face of all that, are still turning out in large numbers.” SEE ALSO: Make Massa Happy! Ayanna Pressley Becomes First Black Woman To Represent Massachusetts In Congress

Read the rest here:

A yanna Pressley on Tuesday night officially became the first Black women to represent Massachusetts in Congress after officials confirmed her inevitable victory. The Democrat ran unchallenged in the general election after she unseated the incumbent, 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, in a seemingly improbable upset that was all part of a larger “Blue wave” of Black women candidates winning primaries across the country. #BREAKING : Democrat Ayanna Pressley is projected to win in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, becoming the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in state history. https://t.co/aEbQQMVVRY pic.twitter.com/OMj07Vx4RW — NPR Politics (@nprpolitics) November 7, 2018 Pressley, who was set to take over the Seventh Congressional District, told NewsOne shortly before her landmark victory in September that her years serving on the Boston City Council as its first African-American woman prepared her for this moment. She was especially nonplussed by how the Democratic Party hadn’t been rallying around her. “I was not surprised, mostly because I knew what I was embarking upon, that this would likely be a lonely, uphill, and bruising journey,” Pressley said at the time . “We’re doing something disruptive, challenging conventional wisdom, narratives and norms about who has a right to run, when you can run, and whether or not you can win.” Pressley was now on the precipice of stepping into the same congressional seat once occupied by John F. Kennedy ahead of his run for president in the 1960s. Providing some much needed political perspective in the era of Donald Trump, Pressley told the New York Times that she was cautiously optimistic for the future. “With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege, it’s not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are,” she said. “Change isn’t waiting any longer. We have arrived, change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835357″ overlay=”true”]

Voter Playlist: 10 Songs That’ll Get You In The Mood To Vote This Election

Read the original:

Source: Jeff Swensen / Getty Today is the day, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today is the day to exercise your right as an American and cast your vote which could potentially change the current state of the country. Midterm elections don’t usually get as much attention as they are this year — but that’s because there are some massive changes to be made in this nation , and it starts locally. When it comes to people of color, women and other minorities, this elections is our chance to shift the way America has been running itself for hundreds of years. A total of 34 Senate seats and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be up for grabs when we head to the polls today, which means it’s time to shake sh** up regarding Congress and Legislators.  Folks are even calling this year the most important election in modern day U.S. History. Twitter User Brian Klass wrote :  America’s character & trajectory will be decided today.Today is a referendum on Trumpism. In 2016, many people thought they’d roll the dice with someone who promised to “shake things up.” But now there are no excuses. We know who he is and what he represents. Now we either accelerate Trumpism or stop its forward progress. We’ve watched Cheetoh — er. Trump — disrespect and ostracize many people over the last two years, including African American women . That’s why it’s imperative that women as a whole, but specifically Black women, hit the polls today to change the narrative that has been placed on sistas. The NAACP tweeted, “This election is too important for any eligible voter of color to sit it out. Our lives are on the line, and it’s going to take all of us showing up to the voting booth to put America on the path of respecting our communities and our interests.” “You are not just the future, you are the present. Vote for what you believe in.” – @chadwickboseman . Young people, rise up! Vote November 6th. Our lives depend on it. #NAACP #Turnout18 #IWillVote pic.twitter.com/0gjMYgUMQu — NAACP (@NAACP) November 3, 2018 Let’s face it, voting can be tedious and boring. But like most boring things, it has to be done. So we’ve put together a playlist of songs that can help you through the process. OH and just in case you’re considering not casting a vote this year, think about what happened the last time you didn’t vote.

The Rewind: New MihTy and BlacKkKlansman Comes To DVD

Original post:

Source: Global Grind / Global Grind DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius are back with yet another weekly breakdown of The Rewind . In case you’ve been hiding under a rock or months, The Rewind is a weekly show that breaks down all of the things you may have missed in the last week. No matter the topic, our guys DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius are going to discuss it and then rate it from a 1-10. On this episode of The Rewind, we’re talking  BlacKkKlansman . The film premiered in theaters on August 10th and is set to be released on DVD on November 6th. That’s right, election day! The Spike Lee joint, which was co-produced by Jordan Peele,  stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, a black detective in Colorado Springs that goes undercover to not only infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan but also bring down the entire operation before they carry out a plot to harm hundreds of black people. The film did numbers at the box office. It has pulled over $85 million so far but did it really live up to all of the hype? Landon and Franchise give their opinion. For Landon, although the film is obviously about racism, he felt that the racism was very forced in the movie. If you’re sensitive to certain language, be advised that there will be a lot of racial slurs being thrown around in this film — this is the KKK, you know? Also, was accuracy an issue? Find out what Landon and DJ Franchise had to say about that. Then we discuss Jeremih and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaboration project, MihTy .  The two crooners came together for their release produced by Hitmaka. The project was released on October 26th and has been met with mixed reviews. Jeremih and Ty Dolla Sign have previously released singles in promotion of the album. Over the summer they dropped “The Light.” Then they dropped  “Goin Thru Some Thangz” earlier in October. A few weeks later, they dropped  “New Level”. What did DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius weigh in.

Brian Kemp Pops A Blood Vessel After Stacey Abrams Is ‘Endorsed’ By The New Black Panther Party

Visit link:

S tacey Abrams  has been running for governor of Georgia against Brian Kemp , who is also the secretary of state of Georgia, which means he oversees elections. Kemp was clearly afraid that his racist voter suppression tactics may not seal the deal for him, which is why his latest fear-mongering tactic was so laughable. He exploded on Twitter on Election Day eve that the New Black Panther Party was endorsing Abrams. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction Kemp wrote, “The Black Panther Party is backing my opponent. RT if you think Abrams is TOO EXTREME for Georgia!” See the photo of them below standing in front of a Family Dollar store. The Black Panther Party is backing my opponent. RT if you think Abrams is TOO EXTREME for Georgia! https://t.co/BCjWXdi4la #gapol #gafirst #tcot #gagop — Brian Kemp (@BrianKempGA) November 5, 2018 Kemp also told CBS , “It’s no surprise that militant Black Panthers are armed and patrolling the streets of Georgia for Stacey Abrams. The Black Panthers are a radical hate group with a racist and anti-Semitic agenda. They are dangerous and encourage violence against our men and women in uniform.” The original Black Panther Party, which was founded by Bobby Seale and the late Huey Newton , officially ended in 1982. In 1989 , a fringe organization called The New Black Panther Party began. It has been denounced by original Black Panthers and the even the NAACP. Kemp was clearly jumping on this “endorsement” from a group that has no political or social relevance in the Black community. See Bobby Seale blasting the New Black Panther Party below: Kemp needs to focus on his own extreme ways, like voter suppression, which made former President Jimmy Carter call on him to resign as secretary of state .
