Coincidence? Black People In Georgia Typically Get The Oldest Voting Machines, Increasing Chances Of Error

View original post here:

A n often overlooked way that suppression of Black votes occurs has been through the use of ancient, error-prone paperless voting machines. Many of these ATM-style pieces of aging equipment have been around for nearly two decades and were riddled with known problems. Still, they were being used for Tuesday’s pivotal Midterm elections that carry a world of political consequence. The practice was particularly problematic in Georgia, where all voters were using the same equipment. But there was an important distinction to be made: voters in the poorest communities, which many times is synonymous for where Black folks live, tend to have the oldest of the machines made available to them, increasing errors for a demographic that has traditionally been underserved politically. “The counties and cities with the fewest resources are voting on the oldest equipment that tend to have the most problems,”  Edgardo Cortés , an election security advisor at the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, confirmed to NewsOne during an interview on Monday. Cortés said the Brennan Center, a nonpartisan law and policy institute at New York University Law School, has been making a big push nationally, including in Georgia, to get states and local governments to get rid of the paperless equipment. Using them could result in voters continuing to see their votes being switched, as was the case in Georgia during early voting in the weeks leading up to Election Day. That probability far outweighed the chances of any electronic interference, Cortés said. Making matters worse, there is no paper trail that could verify the voter’s intent. See Also: Judge Rejects Brian Kemp’s Georgia Absentee Ballot Suppression Attempt Not including printed paper or provisional ballots, there were only five states nationwide that were exclusively using paperless electronic voting machines that don’t provide printed documentation of the voter’s choices. Those states are Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Another eight states, including Texas and Pennsylvania, were also using paperless machines in some of their jurisdictions. Predictably, the problem all came down to money for these states’ underserved communities. “They don’t have the finances and resources to switch out the newer equipment,” Cortés said. “Because of that, you start to see a divide in the voting experience depending on where you live.” Georgia’s election was under a microscope for good reason. Electronic machines there have been  vulnerable to hacking and were  notoriously prone to errors . The main problem involved voters selecting a candidate on the screen before the machine automatically cast the ballot for a different candidate. Errors with the machines tended to involve voter selections automatically switching from Democratic to Republican candidates. All hands are on deck working overtime to help flex the power of the Black vote for the midterm elections. #RepresentTheVote https://t.co/SKgVhIeqHz — NewsOne (@newsone) November 2, 2018 Compounding those reports was the glaring conflict of interest from Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp , the Republican candidate for governor who was also overseeing the state’s election system. He was running against Stacey Abrams , who could make history as the nation’s first African-American woman governor. The two candidates were in a neck-and-neck race, so faulty machines could conceivably hand the election to Kemp. This all came against the backdrop of voting rights groups filing federal lawsuits against Kemp for rejecting certain absentee ballots , blocking approximately 53,000 voter registration forms and purging some 700,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls—all targeting Black voters. The problems with Georgia’s electronic machines were not new, and Kemp has long resisted using a paper ballot backup system since there was no incentive to change it because the errors favor his party. With Election Day here, it’s too late to make changes to the equipment. Cortés advised voters to review their summary screen before casting their vote to ensure that their choices were selected. And as a contingency, officials should maintain enough paper and provisional ballots on hand if machines don’t work. ‘LHHHS5’ Recap: A1 x Lyrica Look Forward To Starting Over

Visit link:

Source: Gabriel Olsen / Getty It’s another season finale of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood, and we start at Ray J and Princess’s Sip and See for Melody. Issa celebration and everyone is feeling the love (at first). A1 and Ray J make peace after all the drama between them (caused by Ray J). A1 also mentions that Safaree hit him up on IG and they’re due for a chat soon. Let’s fast forward to that chat. Safaree tells A1 straight up that he never had sex with Lyrica and we’re thinking about how this really didn’t have to be dragged out so long. But you know, reality TV. Anyway, A1 realizes that the conversations that Safaree has had with Ray got misconstrued. The thing is, Safaree never really answered the questions directly and Ray J just went ham based on assumption and Safaree’s shifty behavior alone. Straight. Outta. Context. Typical. Anyway, A1 asks about whether Safaree sent her a nude photo or not and Safaree says he didn’t send her anything. Then says he doesn’t know if he accidentally sent her something or that he doesn’t remember or whatever. Mind you, he’s fidgeting and acting super shifty. Safaree does apologize for this thing he may or may not have done (but we think he at least sent some sext messages), but A1 isn’t buying it and says he still can’t mess with him right now. Later on, A1 tells Lyrica about their conversation. In the end, he asks her for a DNA test. We know by now, thanks to social media and #TheBlogs, that the baby is A1’s. Ray J, RoccStar and Safaree link up and Ray J is still being messy because as soon as Safaree shows up, Ray J makes a shady comment about how RoccStar and A1 have the same thing in common — smashing Lyrica.   Safaree explains what was said during his sit down with A1. Ray J says Safaree told him that he “did it” (still vague smh). Safaree explains he was talking about the sexting situation and Ray J misconstrued what he said then took it and ran with it like it was the gospel truth. Basically, this is really stupid and could have been nipped in the bud sooner. Ray J tells Safaree that he had him looking stupid. And we’re all just looking at him like: That’s why you should mind your business and in other, not-related but kind of related news, stop talking about Kim Kardashian too. The hell? Just talk too dang much! Meanwhile, Apple officially discovers that her dad actually isn’t her dad. But guess what, her dad said he knew this 33 years ago and is just not telling Apple. Her mom got a DNA test and when she turned out to not be his baby he decided not to deal with her. So, all this hurt and pain was for naught and Shun Love was right, her fake dad is an opportunist. Apple is hurt, but happy to move on and Shun is there to comfort and support her. Hopefully, she’ll be back next season. We like her. A1 and Lyrica have their vow renewal ceremony and exchange dramatic tearful vows about how they love to each other, yatta yatta. But then Moniece pulls up toward the end of this joyous event and asks Princess what she wants to do. Princess is quite clear when she replies that she wants to fight. Moniece replies that she never throws the first punch. Princess starts throwing drinks and glasses at her. Moniece throws a cake, etc and they never get to fight because we all know that Love and Hip-Hop security is thorough. This is probably what Moniece was banking on. She knew she didn’t really want to fight. Then Boobie pulls up and he and Marcus go at it over Brooke. Boobie says wasn’t there to fight, but to talk about moving forward with someone he cares about. It’s super random, b ut Marcus had time to throw hands. His attempts were unsuccessful, though, because, security. Give those gentlemen raises, please!  Finally, the episode ends with the usual wrap up montage about it being a new day and we go through each person’s progress or whatever but we all know we’ll be right back here next week watching them devolve again during the reunion. Don’t Try Them: These Midterm Candidates Are Already Proving To Be Clapback Gawds

Source: Miami Herald / Getty In the Trump era, desperate times call for desperate measures. The man in the White House made his way into office with vile language and insidious lies. So, unfortunately, no average candidate can weather the Trump years with mere principles alone. While Michelle Obama ‘s “they go low, we go high” phrase sounds cute, sometimes you have to master the art of the clapback. There are many levels to this. Some opt for the delicate or classy clapback, while others might go for a full-on dragging. Luckily, there’s a few midterm election candidates who find themselves somewhere in the middle of the clapback spectrum. While Twitter fingers are no reason to vote for anyone, electing a candidate who can snatch wigs in 280 characters or less might help you sleep better at night, along with their bomb platform. Hit the next pages to peep which candidates are already ahead of the game with the plans to change the country and the words to burn the haters!
