Malcolm-Jamal Warner never stops working! From his teen days as Theo Huxtable on the Cosby Show to being the cool ladies man on shows like Malcolm & Eddie, MJW has been super consistent in his 30-plus year career. Now the Emmy nominated star is playing a Heart Surgeon on the hit FOX show The Resident. We talked to Warner about playing not only a Black doctor, but a cardiothoracic surgeon in a time when respresentation is more important than ever. He stated, “We spend so much time trying to show the gamit of African American images that I think it’s wonderful to have a Black man as not only one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons in the country, but he’s unabashedly confident about his skills.” During Maocolm’s days on the Cosby Show, one of his former costars was actor Geoffrey Owens who recently made headlines a fan photo of him bagging grocers at Trader Joe’s went viral. Malcolm said if the incident, ”I think I was more moved by the love and support that Geoffrey got and how the internet just really rallied behind him and shamed those who were at the time trying to shame him. Especially when you look at social media and see how terrible people can be, it was really heart warming to see how many people came behind him to be supportive.“ As for what fans can expect from Season 2 or The Resident, “I think what’s really exciting for all of us is that we get to pull back some layers and see what makes each person tick. And it’s fun for us because as much research and homework we’ve done on our characters, there’s still things we’re learning from the writers. “ The Resident is a cool, new medical drama that focuses on the lives and duties of staff members at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. As they learn the ins and outs of the medical field — we learn the ins and outs and their personal lives and the lives of some of their patients. Warner plays AJ Austin aka The Raptor, a larger-than-life cardio-thoracic surgeon whose uncontrollable personality makes him a serious liability to the hospital. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who went from recurring character in season 1 to being promoted to a series regular, describes season 2 of the FOX drama as “riveting”, which is code for “you don’t want to miss any of it”. Catch The Resident every Monday on FOX at 8pm EST.
Source: Supplied by WENN.com / WENN Pete Davidson has had enough. The Saturday Night Live comedian read Kanye West the riot act about last week’s off the cuff, ill-informed post-show pro-Trump speech by the rapper. In a serious but acerbically comical tone, Ariana Grande’s boyfriend tore Yeezy a new one while on the “Weekend Update” segment of Saturday’s (Oct. 6) episode. Davidson refuted Yeezy’s claim that he was bullied about wearing the MAGA hat, explained why he shouldn’t wear the hat, detailed why he shouldn’t speak about politics, urged him to actually take his medication and more. But perhaps the most poignant comment was when Davidson said, “Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass, okay?” Where is the lie? Watch the segment below. Hopefully, someone passes the message on to Kanye West since he is now off social media , again. A racially suggestive Facebook post by a University of Mississippi donor has prompted faculty and students to lead an effort to rename their journalism school after Civil Rights advocate, journalist, and educator Ida B. Wells-Barnett , the Chicago Tribune reported. A Facebook post by a prominent university donor is denounced as racist, sparking a call to rename the Ole Miss journalism school for Chicago activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett https://t.co/iKKD1fTIlK pic.twitter.com/2FviDr7wjy — Chicago Tribune (@chicagotribune) October 7, 2018 According to the news outlet Ed Meek , one of the institution’s biggest donors, took to social media in September to post about a drop in the school’s enrollment. “A 3 percent decline in enrollment is nothing compared to what we will see if this continues … and real estate values will plummet as will tax revenues,” he wrote. “We all share in the responsibility to protect the values we hold dear that have made Oxford and Ole Miss known nationally.” He posted that Facebook status along with a photo of two Black University of Mississippi students, which for many insinuated that racial diversity was the cause of the decline in enrollment. After receiving backlash, Meek issued an apology but simply saying sorry wouldn’t suffice. It sparked a larger conversation about racism on campus; both in the past and present. A group of professors and students penned a letter asking that the journalism school—which is currently named after Meek—be renamed after Wells-Barnett. “Removing Ed Meek’s name from the School is a necessary, but basic, step in a much longer process of reparative justice,” read the letter, according to the news outlet. “Our university must firmly stand for its stated values of intellectual excellence, non-discrimination and inclusion and support for all its students.” The group is also asking for the removal of a Confederate statue on the Ole Miss campus and for journalism scholarships to be created for Black women who want to pursue careers in the media industry. The state College Board will have the final say in this matter. The University of Mississippi made the decision last year to include plaques in campus buildings that were built by slaves. Ole Miss isn’t the only higher education institution that is dealing with present-day racism and past ties to slavery. Last year, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey renamed areas of its campus to pay homage to the slaves who built the university from the ground up. T he Getty Institute is working to preserve rich and historic Black artwork. According to the New York Times , the Los Angeles-based institution announced the creation of a new program that is centered on research surrounding African American artists and their work. The Getty to Start a Research Center for African-American Art. We're honored to be a partner institution. https://t.co/GiKkZKzqDg — CAAM (@CAAMinLA) September 25, 2018 Dubbed the African American Art History Initiative, the research center will focus on acquiring pieces and spearheading research projects that will provide more context about artists connected to the African Diaspora, the news outlet writes. The institute will team up with museums and organizations to push the research forward. Amongst institutions that they will partner with include Spelman College, Art+Practice, the California African American Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem. “The study of African American art history is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of American art history. We aim to bring our resources, talents, and relationships together to promote advanced research in an area of American art that has been underfunded and under researched,” James Cuno , president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust said in a statement . The project has a budget of $5 million. One of the first acquisitions under the initiative is the work of assemblage artist Betye Saar . “Saar is one of the major African-American artists in the region, somebody whom artists like John Outterbridge and David Hammons look up to. And she was born in 1926, so to start with something this wide-ranging is wonderful,” historian and project consultant Kellie Jones told the news outlet. She also added that the collaborative aspect of the project will “help move important archives out into other facets of the contemporary art world, whether the classroom or the museum.” There has been an ongoing effort—especially on the West Coast—to preserve historic elements of Black culture. Earlier this year, the African American Museum & Library at Oakland received a grant that will allow them to digitize rare footage of protests that took place during the 60s and 70s. Source: Mark Davis / Getty It’s National Plus Size Appreciation Day , and we’re suppose to observe it by celebrating and highlighting all the beautiful people who don’t fit into what society deems as “fit” or “thin”. But it’s 2018 (almost 2019) which means it’s time to switch some things up. It’s time to change the way we think and how we view people who don’t fit the cookie cutter, mold. Just because you’re bigger, taller or curvier than some, it shouldn’t stop your confidence from shinning bright. Just ask Rihanna . Riri may not be considered Plus Size, but she knows first hands what it feels like to be scrutinized for gaining a few extra pounds in Hollywood. In an interview with Vogue Magazine back in May, the Bad Gal revealed, “ You’ve just got to laugh at yourself, honestly. I mean, I know when I’m having a fat day and when I’ve lost weight. I accept all of the bodies. I’m not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl, and I still feel very beautiful and confident in my lingerie.” Rih isn’t the only celeb helping women put their best foot forward in life, despite their size. T he NAACP urged voter to “harness our frustration and use our voices at the ballot box in November,” after the U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday, largely along party lines, to the U.S. Supreme Court. The conservative-dominate high court now completes the Republicans’ stranglehold on all three branches of the federal government. SEE ALSO: Caucasian Rage! From Kavanaugh To Trump, When White Men Attack In a sharply worded statement, the NAACP criticized the Senate’s Republican majority for hastily pushing through Kavanaugh’s confirmation despite serious concerns about the judge. “The NAACP condemns this reckless and deeply partisan rush to confirm Kavanaugh after critical issues were raised about his integrity, temperament, impartiality, history of sexual assault, and judicial record,” said Derrick Johnson , the NAACP’s president and CEO. “There is far too much at stake for every community not to have fully reviewed this nominee for the highest court in the land who will chart our future for a generation.” The U.S. Senate’s decision confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is a devastating blow to our democracy. It threatens the integrity and legitimacy of the Senate and the Supreme Court as institutions. #Kavanaugh #temperament was the issue. https://t.co/5bYYTr4wuu — Derrick Johnson (@DerrickNAACP) October 6, 2018 The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee had paused the confirmation process on Sept. 28 for one week to allow the FBI to look into Christine Blasey Ford ’s allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school. During the investigation, Democrats complained that the GOP directed the agency to conduct a very limited probe, as several other women came forward with allegations similar to Ford’s. By Friday, the Republicans declared that the FBI had not found any corroborating witnesses. In a 50-48 vote, the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh, delivering a major victory for President Donald Trump and conservatives who have long coveted control of the U.S. Supreme Court. “There is no check-and-balance in American government. You have one party now in total control of all three branches of government. You have a one-party rule system. The only thing that will break it up is if some folks come out and vote and at least turn the legislative branch around,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton , founder and president of the National Action Network, on Saturday.
