Source: David Livingston/Paras Griffin / David Livingston/Paras Griffin Oprah Winfrey made her own little history on Thursday. For the second time in her career, the media mogul endorsed a politician running for office. Her first was Former President Obama and now her second is Stacey Abrams , the Black Democratic candidate running to be Georgia’s next Governor. If Abrams win she will be the first Black woman to do so in American history . The creator of the OWN network, who is also a registered Independent, told a crowd today (Nov 1) at a Cobb County town hall, that she believes in Abrams and believes that she is the future of the state of Georgia. “I am here today because Stacey Abrams cares about the things that matter,” Winfrey told a cheering crowd , citing Abrams’ stance on environmental protection, healthcare and gun control. Adding that Abrams keeps “standing strong for the values that matter to me and the values that matter to Georgians all over this state.” Winfrey added that “if you’re woke just a little bit, you know everyone is not treated equally.” “Georgia, you've been on my mind!” Oprah Winfrey says while participating in a campaign event for Democrat Stacey Abrams. “You all are on the very precipice of a historical election.” https://t.co/an3bkmclCP pic.twitter.com/DM3ZgRQoWT — ABC News (@ABC) November 1, 2018 The 64-year-old 60 Minutes special correspondent made sure she let the crowd know that she wasn’t there because she plans on running for President in 2020 or because the Democrats paid her. “I came for myself,” she asserted. “I want to tell you…no one paid for me to come here. No one asked me to come here. I’ve earned the right to think for myself…I don’t want any party and I don’t want any kind of partisan influence telling me what decisions I get to make for myself” “I want to make it very clear,” Oprah Winfrey says while campaigning for Stacey Abrams. “I don't want to run, okay? I'm not trying to test any waters. Don't want to go in those waters.” https://t.co/an3bklUKLh pic.twitter.com/Vy6WkdzgVa — ABC News (@ABC) November 1, 2018 Winfrey also encouraged the women in the audience to vote their values and for politicians that have their best interests in mind. “Vote your values,” she emphasized. “Vote your conscience … the vitriol and the ads, they are designed to confuse and confound you with fear … When you know the right thing, and you can feel it … you can’t be influenced by propaganda and fear.” According to NBC News , Abrams is in a super tight race with her Republican opponent Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Last week, an NBC News/Marist poll found that the race is tied, with likely voters favoring Kemp by a 49 percent to 47 percent spread, a number within the poll’s margin of error. However, Abrams has some other serious backup coming in soon too. Former President Obama will be stumping for her on Friday. Tyler Perry might have just made his best movie ever with Nobody’s Fool . The film is a deep dive into the world of catfishing that stars Tika Sumpter as Danica who is in a year-long relationship with a man she’s never seen in person before. Things are going well until she gets a call from her mother played by Whoopi Goldberg that her sister, played by Tiffany Haddish is coming home from jail and has to live with her. After doing some investigation, Tiffany calls up Nev and Max from MTV’s Catfish to find out if her sister is truly being catfished and the movie goes full steam ahead from there. On today’s episode of Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine we get the honor of chatting with the legendary Whoopi Goldberg, along with Tyler Perry, Tiffany Haddish, Omari Hardwick , Tika Sumpter, and Amber Riley to go behind the scenes of Nobody’s Fool, which is in theaters everywhere this Friday, November 2nd 2018. After I watched the film, I found out a lot of people felt like I did, that this was the best Tyler Perry movie we’ve ever seen. Now love them or hate them Tyler’s movies have a reputation. So when I sat down with the writer, director, and producer of Nobody’s Fool I had to get his opinion on what this meant to him. Tyler told us, “If I’m not trying to continue to get better then I’m not doing my job man. I’m almost 50 and I’ve been in this thing 25 years so I got to keep improving, I’ve got to do something different. This is also the first movie with Paramount so it’s a whole different ballgame for me over there.” Tyler goes on to explain that he didn’t want to have Whoopi Goldberg and Tiffany Haddish in this movie and restrain their comedic minds to doing a PG 13 movie. There is also a special secret cameo in this film that will leave you in tears. Like real tears from laughter. I swear I might have seen a few people literally rolling on the floor in laughter in my theater. I also asked Tyler and Tiffany if either one of them got to smoke with Whoopi, she’s been a big champion of the medical benefits fo marijuana and even has her own line of products for cramps and other pain. Tyler might not have been aware of that because he insisted that Whoopi didn’t smoke, only partakes in a glass of red wine every now and then. Tiffany, on the other hand, disagreed saying that if she doesn’t smoke, she must have had the BEST prop in the world. Whoopi expanded by saying she was the only one who smokes and that she believes in the healing power of marijuana calling it, “the perfect medication.” Trust the entire exchange is super funny and worth watching on this episode of Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine and be sure to go see Nobody’s Fool in theaters November 2nd.

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty On Friday, Rami Malek will bring the story of Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury to life with the movie Bohemian Rhapsody . The music biopic is set to explore the rise of the band during their peak decades in music. It’ll especially give focus to Mercury as he endures his ups and downs with the band, takes on an AIDS diagnosis and goes on to become a music icon well after his passing. Based on the trailer alone, emotions are already running high for the flick and they should. Biopics remain one of the most epic genres since they tend to span an artist’s entire career. Watching the drama unfold onscreen can definitely make you reflect on your own life. Just consider the classic music biopics we’ve come to know and love. For some, anytime they watch What’s Love Got to Do with It , they BECOME Tina Turner. When Tina fought Ike in that car, we were with her. When Ike had the audacity to tell Anna Mae to “eat the cake,” we were right there with our tissue ready to wipe that cheap diner dessert off the Queen. Not to mention, Tina’s final monologue to Ike should be memorized for any future self-motivation talk in the mirror. Then there was Ray. How many of us have had to be a trailblazer in our circle, yet still deal with our many shortcomings? When Ray Charles sang from the pits of his soul in spite of sanctified critics, we applauded. When he got caught up in dope and a life of infidelity, we mourned. And when he confessed his sins to his mom in a dream, we wept. Another biopic that moved many was Straight Outta Compton. Released right around the same time police brutality was getting major attention, the 2015 movie reminded folks that the injustices of the law were nothing new. Songs like N.W.A. ‘s “Fu** Tha Police,” which was very controversial back in 1988, now had new resonance in the years after Mike Brown , Freddie Gray and Sandra Bland . If you weren’t whispering “fu** the police” in theaters while watching Straight Outta Compton… I admire your control. It’s amazing how music stars can seem so far away, yet a deeper delve into their life reveals they’re just as complex as we are. Whether it be the streets of Compton or the rock stages of the 1960s, there has to be a biopic that you can relate to. Try out the quiz below to find out which music classic is lowkey about your life!
H istory was repeating itself with the release of President Donald Trump ’s new dog-whistling political ad days before the crucial Midterm elections. It was reminiscent of the Republicans’ infamous Willie Horton spot that exploited white fear of Black men ahead of the 1988 presidential election. See Also: Republicans Are Using Every Racist Stereotype Imaginable For The Midterm Elections Most of the nation learned about Horton from a 53-second ad intended to send white voters flocking to the polls to vote for then-Vice President George H.W. Bush in theoretical exchange for protection from the alleged hoards of Black criminals. Horton was a convicted murderer who raped a white woman while out of prison under a weekend furlough program. With the debut of his new ad, the president was clearly taking a page from that racist playbook. He tweeted a video on Wednesday that blamed Democrats for allowing an undocumented Mexican immigrant for killing two California deputies and warns that liberals would allow hoards of Hispanic migrants into the country. The video showed deputies removing Luis Bracamontes from a courtroom in February because of his outbursts about killing more cops, during his sentencing. “Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes , killed our people!” reads the opening text of the ad. “Democrats let him stay.” It is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our Country. Vote Republican now! https://t.co/0pWiwCHGbh pic.twitter.com/2crea9HF7G — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 31, 2018 The parallels between each commercial were unavoidable. They are tied together by their blatant use of racism to exploit white fear of Black and brown people. Trump blamed the Democrats for Bracamontes’ crime, and the Horton ad pinned the blame to Bush’s Democratic opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis . Both ads also tell big lies. Massachusetts was not the only state with a furlough program. More than 40 states had similar programs, the Washington Post pointed out in 1988 article. The federal government also had a furlough program in the 1980s. Then-governor Michael Dukakis had supported the prison furlough program, and when he ran for President in 1988, his opponent, George H. W. Bush, used that to his advantage. Bush used America’s racism and fear of Black men to fuel his presidential campaign. pic.twitter.com/wZYfoiERLS — Frederick Joseph (@FredTJoseph) November 1, 2018 Trump was trying to build a case on his false claim that migrants at the nation’s southern border are more likely to enter the country illegally under Democratic rule. The fact is that Trump has deported fewer undocumented immigrants than President Barack Obama did. The difference is that the Obama administration focused on deporting violent criminals and those who posed a national security threat , while Trump has seemed more interested in sending a message by breaking up families regardless of whether a violent crime was committed. Source: M_a_y_a / Getty Low key, Halloween is way more fun as an adult than as a kid. One of the best parts about Halloween as a grown up is the lit parties and unbelievably creative costumes. Seeing famous people dress up as other famous people is pretty dope too. For example, Beyonce rarely changes up her look — specifically when it comes to hair and makeup. But for Halloween, the Queen always shows up and shows out. Bey stepped on necks this year as Toni Braxton . The Queen remade Toni’s “Another Sad Love Song” cover and renamed herself “Phoni Braxton”. Bey always gets it right, and proves she’s not as far removed from the culture as folks think. Toni Braxton isn’t the only legend Bey paid homage to in her post. One fan tweeted , “Do y’all know why Beyoncé’s Halloween costume is near & dear to my heart? Because she channeled Martin with the “Phoni Braxton”. Phoni Braxton. Martin’s impact.
