For The Culture: Dapper Dan Wins Lifetime Maverick Award

Source: Nicholas Hunt / Getty Dapper Dan’s glow up seems to have no end in sight. He was recently recognized for his 20 plus years of style contribution. On Tuesday, September 4 the tailor was honored at the Harlem’s Fashion Row gala hosted at Capitale New York. Mr. Day was presented with the Lifetime Maverick Award. Wearing a black tuxedo with a sequin like bow tie, that matched his signature over sized Gucci sunglasses, the famed outfitter was grateful for the distinction and the opportunity to further open doors for minority designers. “It’s something I never expected, and that’s pretty obvious by the fact I never tried to penetrate the fashion industry,” he explained to Page Six.  “I had absolutely no connection to the structure of fashion, so it was something that I never expected. But I feel great about it now — more so for what it does to people of color, for people behind me.” NBA great LaBron James also had a big night as he formally unveiled HFX x Lebron 16. It is a Nike first; a basketball shoe for women designed by women. Three African American designers crafted the shoe under James’ direction that it be themed after strong Black women. On stage the LA Laker’s speech furthered his sentiments behind the release. “I believe that African American women are the most powerful women in the world” he said. ‘Bron also cited his mother as a huge inspiration for the collaboration. “Because of you, Gloria James, I am able to give back — her sense of pride and sense of strength.” Harlem’s Fashion Row is a social company that provides a voice for multicultural designers; through a creative platform that enables these designers to sell and present their collections to key leaders within the fashion industry. Babyface Says Bobby Brown Originally Hated “Don’t Be Cruel”

Source: Earl Gibson/BET / Getty There’s a lot of history between Bobby Brown and Babyface. In 1986, Bobby was on top of the world. He had just parted ways with New Edition and released his solo debut, King of Stage under MCA Records.  In 1987, Bobby began working on his second album, Don’t Be Cruel , with two young R&B songwriters and producers, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Antonio “L.A.” Reid. Unbeknownst to the general public, he wasn’t really feeling them. We found out a little bit more about this during part one of BET’s The Bobby Brown Story . In the film, we see that Bobby Brown wants an edgier approach to music. He’s introduced to Babyface and L.A. Reid and is instantly skeptical. Their appearance nor their catalog really fit the energy Bobby was trying to achieve. Baby Face and L.A. Reid were fairly new to the scene and although they’ve reached some success of their own, Bobby Brown was skeptical that they’d be able to bring the level of success he was looking for. In fact, according to Babyface, as they worked on “Don’t Be Cruel”, the album’s lead single, he admits that Bobby Brown absolutely hated it. We spoke exclusively to Babyface who told us about his first time meeting Bobby Brown in the studio. “I think ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ might’ve been the first song we did,” said Babyface. “We were just trying to learn each other at that particular point. He didn’t love the song so it wasn’t like he was really into it. It took a little more work to get it done, I think. We got that one done and as other songs started to come in, I think he liked the other songs a little bit better.” According to The Bobby Brown Story , Bobby was very adamant about working with Teddy Riley, and he did for his new jack swing laced second single “My Prerogative.”  The track went on to earn Bobby his first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and become the second-biggest single of 1989. In the end, all five singles from the Don’t Be Cruel  album also reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Babyface wrote and/or produced 6 of the 11 songs on the album. Check out the rest of our exclusive interview with Bobby Brown up top! Don’t forget to watch the conclusion of The Bobby Brown Story tonight on BET.

BET Founder Says He Was Racially Profiled For Keeping Sunglasses On

B ob Johnson , the founder of Black Entertainment Television, recently said that an employee at a luxurious Florida hotel discriminated against him. The billionaire explained that he was racially profiled because he refused to take off his prescription sunglasses. RELATED:  BET Founder Says Corporations Should Consider More Black Execs Johnson’s story is one of the latest high-profile accounts of “Living while Black.” The billionaire was denied check-in at Eau Palm Beach in Manalapan, Florida after a fishing trip on Aug. 24, according to ABC affiliate WPBF . The incident started when a hotel employee told Johnson, who was supposed to stay two nights at the hotel, to take off his sunglasses. Bob Johnson, BET founder, accuses Fla. hotel of ‘racial profiling’ https://t.co/qFtPqPC4tm — The Washington Times (@WashTimes) September 4, 2018 “She said, ‘Well, I can’t check you in if you don’t take off your glasses,’” asserts Johnson, who had shown his state driver’s license, American Express credit card and passport to the employee. “I said, ‘Well, I’m not taking off my glasses.’” The incident ended with the police being called. No compromise was reached between the two parties, Johnson said. He left the hotel without any resolution and felt “humiliated.” The clerk was adhering to standard policy, a spokesman for Eau Palm Beach said. “It is standard operating procedure in the industry to ask to make sure that the person who is presenting themselves to check-in and they present identification that it does match and if they’re wearing dark glasses with a ball cap low over their face, you want to make sure that it is the same person, much like what would happen at TSA rules going through the airport,” spokesman  Nick Gold  said. “I think it’s a silly rule and I think it has overtones of racial profiling,” said Johnson, who became the first Black billionaire when he sold BET in 2001 and owns several hotels, adding that he would never return to the hotel.
