National Trust’s Youth Program To Preserve Black Historic Landmarks

T he National Trust for Historic Preservation has been at the forefront of conserving landmarks throughout the country that are embedded in the fabric of Black history. In an effort to diversify the industry and develop career pathways for the next generation of aspiring preservationists, the organization created a program that gives young African Americans first-hand experience with the restoration of landmarks. NEWS: New Partnership with @Fund2F will Provide Youth Preservation Training at Sites of African American History #TellTheFullHistory #NinaSimone https://t.co/dTbYMQZ1OZ — HOPE Crew (@HopeCrewNTHP) May 2, 2019 In 2014 the organization launched an initiative called the Hands-on Preservation Experience Crew (HOPE Crew) as an avenue to provide youth with training sessions that covered masonry repair, window restoration, and other skills. This year, with a grant from the Fund II Foundation, the National Trust is putting the focus on exposing Black youth to preservation trades. Through the program—which is being led by the organization’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund—participants will have hands-on experience with rebuilding structures that are tied to Black achievement and activism. The first cohort of Black students is currently enrolled in a pre-apprenticeship program at North Carolina’s Schenck Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. One of their first projects will be the preservation of late songstress Nina Simone ’s former North Carolina home. They will spend a few days re-painting and making repairs in the house. Other projects include the restoration of playwright August Wilson ’s Pittsburgh home and a house in Long Island that belonged to John and Alice Coltrane . “This Fund II support—the largest investment in HOPE Crew’s 5-year history—represents an important evolution in the National Trust’s commitment to telling stories that reflect the African American experience in this country,” Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Brent Leggs said in a statement. The leadership team at the Fund II Foundation says they are committed to ensuring that the achievements and contributions of Black pioneers don’t go unsung. “Our commitment to HOPE Crew supports two key pillars of the Foundation: to preserve the rich, cultural heritage of African Americans whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the world, and to introduce young people to occupations in STEM related fields,” said Linda Wilson , Executive Director, Fund II Foundation. “The projects celebrate iconic figures, instill community pride, and also provide the opportunity to educate about them and their achievements for generations to come.” There have been several initiatives launched to increase diversity within the preservation industry. In 2018, the National Trust, the National Park Service and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation joined forces with Morgan State University for the creation of a program called Preservation in Practice which was designed to empower HBCU students to pursue careers in historic preservation. Jena 6 Defendant Theo Shaw Becomes A Lawyer

I t’s been nearly a decade since a group of Black teenagers—known as the “Jena 6”—were excessively charged for the alleged assault of a white teen in Louisiana following several racist incidents that took place within their school. Their case garnered national attention; putting the focus on racist loopholes within the country’s criminal justice system. For Theo Shaw —one of the individuals who was convicted—experiencing injustice first-hand ignited his passion to pursue a career in law. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune , Shaw recently became a lawyer. From 'Jena 6' defendant to a promising career, Theo Shaw is officially a lawyer https://t.co/9KWc9wZHbC — NOLA.com (@NOLAnews) April 27, 2019 He was sworn in by Chief Justice Bernette Johnson at the Louisiana Supreme Court on April 26. For Shaw, the swearing-in ceremony inside the courtroom was a full circle moment. In 2006, he sat in a courtroom along with five other Black teens facing an attempted murder charge that could have put him behind bars for 50 years. Through the power of protest and a strong legal team, the felony charges that the teens faced were lowered to misdemeanor charges and Shaw’s criminal record was expunged. Shaw went on to attend community college, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and studied law at the University of Washington. He’s done work with legal advocacy organizations that include the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Innocence Project New Orleans. During the ceremony, Shaw was surrounded by family, friends, and individuals who were instrumental in fighting for his justice. “Being wrongly arrested and incarcerated as a teenager motivated me to become a lawyer,” Shaw told Because of Them We Can in a statement. “After being caged for nearly seven months, I left that jail with a conviction in my heart to stand and fight with all people at risk of losing their freedom.” He hopes that his story will inspire others to make an effort to change the landscape of the criminal justice system. Philando Castile’s Mother Pays Off Lunch Debt For High School Students In Minnesota

T he mother of Philando Castile —a 32-year-old Black man who tragically lost his life at the hands of a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota three years ago—is honoring her son’s legacy by turning her pain into something positive. According to CBS Minnesota , Valerie Castile has paid off the lunch debt for students at Robbinsdale Cooper High School. Philando Castile’s Mom Presents $8,000 Donation To Help Clear Student Lunch Debts https://t.co/3BcZ2BMIPs pic.twitter.com/enh7OEzJog — WCCO – CBS Minnesota (@WCCO) April 26, 2019 Castile donated $8,000 to the school through the Philando Castile Relief Foundation. The funds will go towards clearing the lunch debt bill for high school seniors who are graduating. Within the district, students who have outstanding lunch debts are barred from receiving their diplomas. Castile said she wanted to make the donation because Philando—who worked at a school cafeteria—was adamant about helping students pay off their lunch debt. “This is something that Philando held near and dear to his heart,” she told the news outlet in a statement. “He’d pay for children’s lunch meals out of his own pocket instead of letting a child go hungry that day he would pay for it himself.” Last year a charity created in Philando’s honor raised $130,000 to pay off the lunch debt for students who attended school in St. Paul. Outstanding lunch debt has become a growing issue within the school district. According to Carlton Jenkins who serves as the superintendent of Robbinsdale Area Schools, the amount of debt has skyrocketed to $300,000. Many of the students who have debt are living in poverty, making it extremely hard for them to pay for lunch. Donations like the one made by the Philando Castile Relief Foundation are needed. The Minnesota school district isn’t the only one facing lunch debt issues. USA Today reported that 75 percent of school districts across the country had unpaid student meal debt during the 2016-2017 academic year. Woman Who Paid R. Kelly’s Bail Not Questioned In Unpaid Rent Case

Source: Nuccio DiNuzzo / Getty Valencia Love , the woman who famously paid R. Kelly ‘s bail, will not be questioned in the troubled singer’s unpaid rent case. Kelly is battling with his studio landlord over owed monies currently, along with his other mounting legal issues . The Blast reports : According to court documents obtained by The Blast, a Chicago judge recently dismissed Valencia Love from the lawsuit between Kelly and his former recording studio landlord. The landlord won a $173,000 judgment against Kelly over unpaid rent and has been trying to collect for several months. They fired off subpoenas to multiple banks where Kelly had accounts, Sony Music, and ASCAP (for his royalties). They were able to seize $154k from his Bank of America accounts plus $50k from Sony, which settled the debt. They also were informed by WinTrust Bank that Kelly was overdrawn and had negative $13 in his account. In newly filed docs in the case, it is revealed the landlord had also subpoenaed Love, in an effort to ask her if she was holding money for Kelly or had any of his assets. Love was quoted as saying the money she used to bail out the singer was his own, and the landlord suspected Kelly was hiding his assets among his legal team, who were also subpoenaed. The debt has since been settled. — Photo: Getty

Nipsey Hussle’s Team Shuts Down Memorial Over Greedy Folks Trying To Cake Up

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN As family and fans continue to mourn the late Nipsey Hussle , his team has decided to shut down a loving memorial due to greedy bootleggers attempting to cash in on his legacy. A makeshift memorial near the spot where the rapper was slain will no longer be in existence. TMZ reports : Here’s what the wild scene outside Nipsey’s shuttered store looked like … people selling bootleg t-shirts with Nipsey’s image, others demanding money for a tour of the neighborhood, and some even charging fans just to walk through the area where Nipsey was shot. The memorial became so busy, food trucks started parking outside. Sources close to Nipsey tell us the whole thing reeked of disrespect … and they felt like he was not being properly honored, so they’re closing up shop. We’ve seen this kind of thing before … scalpers tried charging astronomical prices for free tickets to Nipsey’s celebration of life, and people who went to the service tried selling the free programs for huge profits on eBay. That stinks for fans of Nipsey Hussle who wished to pay their respects, but the family promises there will be other ways to honor his memory. — Photo: WENN

Tyrese Shares Picture From The Set Of Sony’s Spider-Man Spinoff Film ‘Morbius’

When Sony announced that they were working on Spider-Man spinoff films for  Venom   and Morbius without the teenage webslinger even as so much as making an appearance, there was a collective groan from comic book fans around the world. But with the surprising success of the actually entertaining Venom , Sony is now going full steam ahead with production on Morbius which stars Jared Leto as biochemist Michael Morbius who’s turned into the Living Vampire after a failed lab experiment, and Tyrese Gibson as Agent Simon Stroud who’s hot on the trail of the blood sucking antihero. Yesterday (May 2), Black Ty took to IG to post the first on set pic of Morbius which is currently filming in London. Tyrese is draped in a trench coat and bulletproof vest while standing next to Morbius director Daniel Espinoza ( Life ). View this post on Instagram On set in London, UK standing next to a man who is brilliant beyond…… Our director Daniel Espinosa!! Over our first private dinner we both talked about and was singing the praises of a real one… Denzel Washington DanieL directed Denzel in the film SAFE HOUSE!!!! And now he’s directing me opposite Jared Leto in this #MarvelMovie #MORBIUS I have to apologize I get nervous cause he directed my all time sometimes my all time HERO he’s been on my #BucketList of directors I’ve always wanted to dance with…… And it happened!!!!!!!!!! #InTheWoods #OneOfGodsGiftsToActors on set he speaks our language…. #Morbius2020 A post shared by TYRESE (@tyrese) on May 2, 2019 at 12:34pm PDT Sony’s Morbius is set to drop on July 31, 2020 and will expand Sony’s version of the Marvel Universe. That being said it’s almost inevitable that Morbius and Venom will at some point crossover but whether or not Spider-Man will ever join the fray remains to be seen. Being that Marvel Studios has Sony’s permission to use Spider-Man in their films for a few more flicks before that deal runs out means that it’s only a matter of time before Sony reboots their Spider-Man franchise and integrates him back into their own Marvel universe. But whether or not they’ll keep fan favorite Spidey Tom Holland in that role or recast it with a new face is anyone’s guess at this point. Either way, we just hope they don’t F-up the Spider-Man franchise now that Marvel’s got it back on steady ground. — Photo:

Heard You: ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Movie Director Announces Changes Are Coming After Slander

Source: Paramount Pictures Sonic fans were up in arms after Paramount Pictures shared the first trailer for its Sonic The Hedgehog movie. The fallout was so bad that the director of the film announced that changes will be made before the films theatrical release. The trailer has managed to rack up over 22 million views but has nearly 500,000 dislikes compared to 291K likes. Twitter collectively lost all of its rings when they got their first glimpse of the CGI blue hedgehog and rightfully so. He looked absolutely a mess thanks to his weird human-like features which included his awkward furry long legs, missing gloves, and his human teeth. One Twitter user went as far as to fix the character, and we can’t front their version looks way better than the studios. Left is original screenshot. Right is my rework to make #Sonic more stylized. pic.twitter.com/IhXeAZYlQI — Edward Pun (@EdwardPun1) April 30, 2019 Well Sonic fans your outrage has been acknowledged, and your screams have been heard, the director for the movie Jeff Fowler announced via his Twitter account that changes are coming to Sonic. “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… # sonicmovie # gottafixfast” Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast — Jeff Fowler (@fowltown) May 2, 2019 Now whether that means the movie will have its wig pushed back is unknown, but so far that doesn’t seem to be the case, and the film is still slated for a November release. As a gamer and a huge fan of the SEGA’s Sonic The Hedgehog I appreciate this. If you’re going to do this movie at least have the most accurate representation of the iconic character as possible. Chances are still high the movie will be a disaster but at least get that part of the film right, the casting of Jim Carey as Dr.Robotnik already seems like a good move on their part. We are hoping that Paramount Pictures and SEGA are taking cues from Edward Pun’s job when it comes to bringing the speedy hedgehog to the screen. — Photo: Paramount Pictures

JAY-Z & Meek Mill Meet With Robert Kraft Amidst His Spa Case

Source: Photo: WENN.com Robert Kraft continues to live a very charmed life. Even with his name in the middle of scandal he is keeping good company. TMZ is reporting that the New England Patriots owner has is still shaking and moving out with some big names. Earlier this week the billionaire was seen chatting with both JAY-Z, Meek Mill and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin. The four moguls met for REFORM Alliance; an organization whose goal is to bring more common sense to the United States criminal justice system. Led by CNN’s Van Jones, the group discussed reform, policy, advancing employment opportunities and more. Rob’s attendance is especially interesting as he is currently fighting to keep video footage of him allegedly getting sexually serviced by a masseuse at the now infamous Orchids of Asia Spa in Florida. His legal team addressed the court in Palm Beach County stating “the requirements to curtail what can be captured must be scrutinized and high levels of responsibility must be met to avoid the intrusion on the activities of the innocent. These strict standards were simply not met in this case. There was no effort made to avoid capturing innocent activity behind the closed-door of a massage room. There is no other remedy but to suppress the evidence gathered.” Kraft has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution. He is due at court in late May. #StyleCrush: Allen Onyia Makes Street-Chic Cool As True Religion’s New Artistic Director

Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Every few years, the climate of the fashion industry changes drastically. At one point, it was cool to rock baggy clothes and mismatched prints, until it became chic to wear skinny jeans and button ups. One thing that rarely shifts in fashion is the desire to incorporate a little street style, no matter what look you’re going for. Big brands sometimes use to stray away from adding “street fashion” into their collections, but they always come back to the culture for a little inspo. In an effort to reassert itself into the genre of streetwear, True Religion hired UpscaleHype cofounder Allen Onyia as their new artistic director. Onyia is a recognized tastemaker in streetwear fashion circles and was named “Menswear’s Most Important Instagram Account” by GQ in 2018. In a press release about Allen’s new, excited gig, True Religion said in a statement: “In his new role, Onyia will innovate modern and elevated streetwear for True Religion, which has iconic roots in the aesthetic. He plans to apply the same ethos to design as he does to his platforms – “look good, feel good and be a part of something”. View this post on Instagram What’s the word? Tell me what you heard. #UpscaleLife A post shared by Allen Onyia (@allenonyia) on Mar 31, 2019 at 9:03am PDT Onyia said of upcoming position: “I have always admired True Religion as an iconic brand with deep roots in the streetwear category. I am thrilled to join the team and bring my vision to reestablish a brand people can associate with, in this new age of streetwear.” True Religion CEO Chelsea Grayson added: “We have been driving towards this watershed moment since I joined the Company. I am excited to work with Allen to return True Religion to its rightful place among streetwear leaders. The whole point of this [hire] is it really signals a sea change for the company and its progression into the future. This is a real line in the sand and I was intent on that when I joined the company.” View this post on Instagram Helluva contrast. #UpscaleLife A post shared by Allen Onyia (@allenonyia) on Mar 12, 2019 at 6:26pm PDT “Allen lives, eats and breathes streetwear and the streetwear aesthetic on all ends of the spectrum. So he knows how to dress it up, dress it down, make it more elevated or less elevated, and I really respect that fluidity in his style.” Adding Allen to the crew is just one of many changes the brand has planned. Grayson says there will be less denim and more crewneck T-shirts, crewneck long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, outerwear and elevated fabrications. But Allen isn’t new to this fashion ish. Back in 2008, he co founded the site UpscaleHype with his brother Kyle Onyia, which focused on coverage of high-end men’s wear and celebrity fashion. He also worked with True Religion once before as as a brand ambassador when the brand teamed up with Travis Scott back in 2014. Grayson says Onyia’s mark touch on the brand will be felt as soon as their Spring collection drops — but you’ll see more of his works during the holiday assortments. Congrats, young King.
