“Oops, I swallowed it again. I played with my ring, got lost in my intestine, oh 911 911.” Sometimes this is what happens when you’re playing with something so small near your mouth, that one yawn makes you swallow it. If it’s edible, don’t panic, you’re just stupid but not in danger yet. If it’s a battery, coin or a Celine Dion CD you’re in trouble. Unfortunately, having babies or animals around makes you be twice more careful than usual if you don’t want your hamster get eaten by your cat, your cat eaten by your dog or your dog eaten by your baby. Shit happens, but we never know when. To talk about what we’re calling “the bowel’s call” a young British graphic-designer joins us today, ladies, gentleman, babies, please welcome Matt Needle ! Matt is a 22 year old British graphic designer and illustrator based in Cardiff, United Kingdom, Europe, Earth, Universe. He went to the University Of Wales, Newport, where he has been freelancing since the second year of his University Course, and now he does it on a fulltime basis. Matt is now proud to say he gained a First Class Honours in Design and Illustration. Since this graduation, his work (posters, CD covers, mural illustrations ..) profile and portfolio have gone from strength to strength, exhibiting all over the United Kingdom, Europe and recently in Australia, as well as working for Major worldwide clients, such as Amnesty International, Armani, Hugo boss etc. No biggie then. Creating images has been his passion since childhood, so yes, he pretty much loves the fact that he’s getting paid (and sometimes laid) for making pictures. As many artists and graphic designers of our time, Matt is heavily inspired by the things he sees around him and he strives to create beautiful, meaningful, complex and often bizarre pieces. He’s also particularly excited about films and music, and would like, in the near future, to work within the movie business, maybe in directing or in the art direction department. Our artist of the day has a great “inspirational artist” list: Salvador Dali, Escher, Massimo Vignelli, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Terry Gilliam, Bauhaus, Surrealism, Paul Rand, amongst many others, and if you don’t know one of this genius’, don’t waste your time any longer by being uncultured and Google them. One thing you’ll realize about Matt ‘s art is that he’s kind of abstract in the way he communicates ideas, not because it’s trendy, but because he wants people to really think about and analyze what they are viewing. He is so not happy unless he is creating stuff. His favourite means of creating a piece would be either digital (in Photoshop) or hand assemblage or “collage” as it’s more commonly known. This gives his work the perfect balance of depth and abstractness. These are techniques that we would recommend to any budding graphic-designer (if you want to be successful and get a lot of money, of course). Recently, our British graphic-designer worked on projects for Hugo Boss, Clash Magazine, Tiger Beer, Funkbuddha Film Productions, The Big Chill Festival and many more. As he gained some major popularity, a website became necessary. Since its inception, it has played a vital role in his promotion and networking, and he also uses social networking sites such as twitter, facebook and society 6 to communicate with like-minded people. Plus, Matt is really super cool, so if you have any questions about his job, career or one of his creations, don’t hesitate in contacting him, he’ll be thrilled to answer you. Once more, FML has hosted a great artist for our traditional illustration day. Some of them are young and still in high school, some of them work for Armani and others published their 4th book recently (and guess what? You can buy it !). But they have one thing in common: they all have a great sense of humor and they did not pick the FML story they were going to illustrate randomly: “I chose this particular FML to illustrate as it wasn’t too wacky, strange, perverted or dark. Bad tattoos are bad indeed, once it’s on your skin you’ll never get rid of it, so if you don’t want to live a moment that will end in the FML moderation machine, so guys, please think about it twice. The warning part being over, we can now make fun of people who screwed up their tattoos! Sometimes it’s because of their initial idea (having a cat on your belly, with your belly button representing its asshole), or when the tattoo guy made a big mistake like when some guy ended up with, instead of “I love my mum”, a nice hearted “I love my cum”. Last chance, before you end up going to a doctor who will burn your skin for 1.000.000$ with a laser. And we’re not exaggerating to scare you, today’s illustration should do most of the scaring (and funny) part. Guys, let us introduce you to our artist of the day, Noa Liberman-Plashkes ! Noa is 26 years old. She lives in Tel Aviv, Israel with her husband and their pets – a dog and a cat. She’s been a graphic designer and Illustrator for 6 years now. She went to Shenkar College for Design which is one of the biggest colleges in Israel, and studied Illustration for 4 years. She works part time as a graphic production artist in a Post Production Company who makes most of Israel’s TV commercials, and part time as a freelance illustrator, creating illustrations for animation design, magazines and various print publications. Ah, we feel like we’re repeating ourselves, but yes, today’s artist loves her job, and she wishes she could do freelance work all the time, she loves working in Post Production as it’s pretty interesting. She wishes she could learn how to model in 3D, and brushes up her animation skills whenever possible but she just doesn’t have the time. It’s a hard life. Some Projects she’s working on at the moment: Animation Design for stories for the children site Speakaboos and the animation portal Aniboom , doing a weekly illustration spot in a green living section of an Israeli paper, and lots more. It comes and goes. Noa doesn’t run a blog (not an English language one, at least), she prefers using micro-blogging social networks like twitter, which steals most of her free time (seriously, ours too), but she does own a DA account and a website, that you’ll find linked at the end of this article. She created her website a couple of years ago because she wanted something a bit more personal than showcasing her work on flickr. What do she likes? Music, and lots of it, she loves Indie Rock, New Wave, Electro, Breakbeat and the like. She loves reading and tries to finish a book a week. She just finished reading Philip Pullman’s series “His Dark Materials” for the second time and she recommends it (as soon as we’ll finish Tinkerbell’s biography we promise, we will read it). She loves Sci-Fi and Fantasy books and movies. She doesn’t watch lots of TV other than House M.D, and Buffy the Vampire. She loves animals as well, she used to work in a pet store when she was a student. This job gave her lots of FML tales, sadly, none of them got through the moderation stage. Other than that, she spends most of her time online, reading blogs and design sites, and tries to draw for fun when she has some spare time! “-Last question before we let you go off to eat puppets while dancing to Buffy’s soundtrack, why did you choose this story? -I chose this FML because It made me laugh. Back in the day I had a good friend who ran a tattoo parlor, which had to deal with many customers with bad tattoo ideas, and couldn’t do a thing about it. The unicorn idea comes from a Perry Bible Fellowship I read a while ago. It’s a great comics strip, BTW… -Unicorn, yami. And why did you decided to take a part in this amazing FML illustration section adventure? -I decided to send an illustration to FML because I love this site. Select character: Steve Napierski . Here we go-oh ! Steve is 30. He’s living somewhere in Virginia, USA. Officially, his real job is a web designer, but he’s also a freelance artist, doing some web design, animation, illustrations, etc. As curious as ever, we investigated Steve ‘s life by interviewing him of course, but also by hiring a private detective, going through his garbage, questioning his neighbors, etc. The usual routine. In our defense, we did all that because Steve is as secretive as your next door fast food restaurant’s nugget recipe. But we assume Steve has more chicken in him. Never mind, we’ll talk about his current, and most famous, project: Dueling Analogs , a semi-weekly color web comic that lampoons the culture and subtext of modern gaming culture. He also has another web comic that is about to end, it’s called The Outer Circle. And lastly a super secret (because is such an expert on keeping secrets that he has been asked by the CIA to create a new internal secret language) third project that he has been working on for years and will be launching very soon. Dueling Analogs was launched on November 17th, 2005. Steve wanted to do another gaming web comic because he felt there weren’t enough of them on the internet. Joke, laugh please. Honestly, he had been doing The Outer Circle for a while and decided he wanted to do another web comic that was not story driven. Dueling Analogs was that. Dueling Analogs is even more than that, it’s all that a web comic can dream of. It’s funny, often updated, it’s about videogames, sometimes it’s gory, but it’s always well drawn; five reasons to check his web comic immediately. “- Steve , now that the interview is finished, we reckon that we can tell you that we’re huge fan of Dueling Analogs, so how did you manage to be such a videogame web comic icon? -I’m a self-taught college drop out. But, I make more money than most of the people I know with college degrees. F— Their lives. -Oh, okay. Why did you choose this FML? -Because FML is friggin’ awesome. Schadenfreude is definite what makes most of the world feel good about themselves. And this is the schadenfreude nexus of the internet. -Why did you decided to send an illustration for FML? -Because I really didn’t have a good story to submit. Fuck my boring life. Besides I look forward to the rest of the world commenting that the jerseys referenced in the FML are real football jerseys, a.k.a. soccer, and not American football are I drew.” Comments, we’re waiting for them.
