DVD: Are We Allowed to Call Broadcast News a Classic Yet?

While Network is the movie that prophesied the future of corporate-controlled TV news, James L. Brooks’ 1987 Broadcast News was more zeitgeist-y. The shift toward happy-talk infotainment had been going on long enough that Brooks had satirized it in the 1970s on The Mary Tyler Moore Show , but the battle against what Holly Hunter’s character calls “the historic influence of Entertainment Tonight ” had not been so roundly lost as it is now.

Watch Ricky Gervais Eviscerate Hollywood at the Golden Globes

If you had been waiting to see Ricky Gervais pantomime oral sex between a 24-year-old Playboy Playmate and Hugh Hefner on NBC, then the Golden Globes were for you! They were also for anyone who loves watching the stuffing taken out of Hollywood — and awards shows — in general. So, good for us, then, that Gervais hosted the Globes on Sunday night — just don’t expect to have him back next year. When Phillip Berk was asked after the show if Gervais would host in 2012 , he responded with a very loaded, “No comment.” Alas, we’ll always have this monologue. Kyle Gallner on His Sundance Two-Fer Red State and Little Birds

It’s rare enough to have one film at the Sundance Film Festival, but youngster Kyle Gallner has two pretty high-profile affairs premiering in Park City, Utah later this week: Kevin Smith’s horror film Red State and Elgin James’ in-competition Little Birds . Not bad for a 24-year-old.

‘I Can Do It’: Drunk Paz de la Huerta Cannot Do It

Except for the part where she was turned away from a Golden Globes afterparty for being too wasted, feebly protests “I can do it” to her oppressors and handlers alike, is ushered away in front of a dozen paparazzi and fans, takes a tumble and tears her gown, and signs an autograph with half her boob hanging out, I totally relate to Paz de la Huerta’s drunken awards-night meltdown. Nothing three Aleve can’t fix! And maybe a cease-and-desist letter. [ TMZ ]
