On DVD: What Reality TV Could Learn From Crumb

Truly, reality TV is too timid a whore to tackle the real American dysfunctional family — the kind that breeds crime and weird sexual compulsions and suicides in cluttered, unkempt houses on the not-so-hot side of town. I knew kids that came from those families, and chances are so did you. No, for this you need an indie documentary, and Terry Zwigoff’s famous, acclaimed Crumb (1995), now out in a tricked-out package from Criterion, may be the best film ever made about that creepy edge of American life.

Bad news for fans of laughing and all-around weirdness. According to ArtsBeat , Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte — the man responsible for Tim Calhoun , this guy and, of course, Fart Face — will not return to the show when its 36th season starts this fall. Neither NBC nor Forte’s representatives would comment, but it appears the split is “amicable,” with the MacGruber star hoping to concentrate on other projects, specifically ones that will make more money than MacGruber . Developing… [ NYT /ArtsBeat ]

Joss Whedon is Already Writing Deleted Scenes for The Avengers

Hey Joss Whedon, how’s that Avengers film coming along? “Right now I’m working on a movie that’s got enormous stipulations and is going to be changing and fluid every second,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald . “I’ve come up with dozens of scenes and lines and exchanges and monologues that I adore.” One problem, though: You’ll never see them, because Whedon still hasn’t moved beyond brainstorming. “But while I’m writing them they feed me, excite me and they ultimately inform the character,” he said. “It all goes in.” [ Sydney Morning Herald via Slashfilm ]

REVIEW: Brutal Gangster Murders Story in Mesrine: Killer Instinct

Luridly handsome and resolutely unsympathetic, as played by Vincent Cassel, the title character in the gangster’s greatest hits compilation Mesrine: Killer Instinct is a thug’s thug. It would seem he was so in life as well: A notorious criminal in his native France, Jacques Mesrine died with his leather jacket on (as seen in an ambush depicted in the movie’s opening scene) after a life of unrepentantly violent, sometimes brashly vigilantic misdeeds.

100 Reasons David Fincher Might Have Made the Wrong Facebook Movie

Not to make light of a situation in which three teens have died, seriously, but holy crap have you heard about these Facebook “hit lists” in the small Colombian town of Puerto Asis? The ones comprising 100 names now reportedly targeted by a shadowy killer promising to murder any and all still remaining in the village this week? It’s like a movie — like several movies made by one guy, in fact.

Simon Cowell Outlaws Auto-Tune on U.S. X-Factor

Just a day after word came out that the U.K. X-Factor had auto-tuned its competitors’ voices to “deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers,” Simon Cowell has banned the performance-enhancing software.
