Has Lost REALLY Changed The Way We Watch Television?

If you watched any of the two hours of fan wankery that was the Lost recap show Sunday night, you might have noticed at least one assertion crop up a few times: That Lost has changed television. And lying tangent to that assertion, wrapped up in all those tender fan farewells (and other commentaries ), was the notion that Lost also changed The Way We Watch Television. That, like nothing before it, Lost has rallied us out of our little nerd hideouts to the Internet (or wherever) to theorize, commiserate, fawn or flame. That somehow, before Lost, we didn’t realize the rhetorical power of the medium and were only passive TV watchers. So on this, the day we used to crowd around our laptops to visit The Fuselage or Live Journal or, I don’t know, Fanfiction.net, I say, “Oh, come on. Let’s give ourselves more credit here.”

Advice to TV Execs Looking For the Next Lost: Don’t Bother

Enough has been written about Lost to fill the completely underwhelming Temple fifty times over — seriously, of all the disappointing reveals on the show, that might be the biggest; it should have looked awesome and not like an extra set from Legend of the Seeker . Still, from the production values, to the use of the Internet to form a community, to the entire storyline, Lost was literally like nothing television had ever seen before. This is despite the fact that it cribs from almost every geek pop culture landmark from the last 35 years. And now that Lost is ending — in less than 12 hours! — it seems fitting that it’s leaving the world with one more question: Where will the next Lost come from?

ABC Keeps Edgar Floats From Sinking

And you thought pilot season was over! Despite not placing Edgar Floats on its fall schedule, ABC has ordered six additional scripts of the crime procedural from creator Rand Ravich. Some observers worried that the pilot — which stars Tom Cavanagh as a police psychologist-turned-bounty hunter — was too character driven and quirky for network television, but since this is the same network that actually aired Eli Stone , clearly normal rules are out the window. Don’t be surprised when you start seeing ads for Edgar Floats around midseason. [ Deadline ]

Lost: The Final Scene

So, fellow Middlers and Tailies, Others and Dharmites, Mr. Clucksters and Apollo-Chompers, the end of Lost is nigh. On Sunday night, in a fourteen-and-a-half-hour finalestravaganza, conjoined executive producers Carmon Cuselhof will bury your favorite show alive like a couple of bickering, photogenic diamond thieves. (Have we alienated you with enough inside, borderline nonsensical references yet? Yes? Oh well, you never understood us anyway .) But how will the show finish up its six-season run? To prevent ourselves from spending this weekend curled up in the fetal position while nervously clutching a Hurley-sized bag of Dharma-branded Cheese-Flavor Air Puffs as we await the final round of Answers to our Questions, we’re instead letting our imagination run wild, taking us to the place we dared not visit before: the final scene of Lost . Beware: as this is almost certainly what our last glimpse of the island will look like, spoilers are sure to abound!

Formerly Spoiler-Averse Shonda Rhimes Offers Murderpalooza Grey’s Anatomy Preview Clip

Strange things are afoot at Seattle Grace Mercy West, and they don’t all have to do with that mouthful of a hospital name. It appears that Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Shonda Rhimes has gotten over her famously spoiler-phobic ways… with extreme vengeance . ABC — presumably with blessing from Rhimes — has released the first act of Thursday’s two-hour season finale to Hulu, and it’s filled with more plot points and reveals than a rejected script for Wild Things 6: Dangerous Orgy , written on spec. For instance, can you believe Rhimes allowed the network to show that…
