Paula Abdul: I Am Goofy, Intelligent

Paula Abdul returns to the medium that made her both a household name and a running joke this week: reality television. The former American Idol judge will take on a similar role on Live to Dance , which premieres tomorrow night on CBS. In preparation for the series, Abdul spoke to Julie Chen yesterday and aimed to correct her image. “I am intelligent,” Abdul said, smiling. “Having a brain, that’s a concept, yes, with Paula Abdul. I have a brain.” Abdul admits she can be “goofy,” but shoots down any talk that her on-screen behavior is relate to any substance. “I’ve never had a drinking problem. Even though I’ve been in this business for quite some time, I’ve never physically been drunk in my life. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t use recreational drugs.”

And I don’t try to take them out of their element and do routines in a style they’ve never done before.” Abdul will be joined on the Live to Dance judging table by Kimberly Wyatt and Travis Payne, while the singer also says there will be 90-foot “Dance Domes” under which contestants will perform. As for a certain Fox juggernaut that also premieres next month? “I’m a fan of [ American Idol ], and I always will be as long as they’re going out and finding that raw talent,” Paula says. “Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler – they’re seasoned veterans. They know what it takes to make it, so they’re gonna have a very refined eye. And I’m really happy Randy is at the helm because you need that familiarity. Paula Abdul Returns To TV With ‘Got To Dance’

The former ‘American Idol’ judge will be lead judge on CBS dance show. By Gil Kaufman Paula Abdul Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Paula Abdul said she’d be back in the judge’s chair. Well, a judge’s chair, anyway. A year after walking away from “American Idol,” the former Laker Girl and choreographer to the stars will be returning to TV on the new reality dance show “Got to Dance.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Abdul will be the lead judge, executive producer, creative partner, mentor and coach on the CBS show that is based on an already popular British dance competition. The network gave a green light to the show in March, and Abdul was long rumored to be one of the top choices for lead judge, in addition to having a number of behind-the-scenes and on-air responsibilities on the show. The program is likely to be a mid-season replacement, which could mean that Abdul will go head-to-head with “Idol” in 2011, which will be in its first season without Abdul former on-air sparring partner Simon Cowell. Cowell is departing after Wednesday’s season-nine finale to concentrate on the 2011 launch of the American version of his hit British reality singing show, “The X Factor.” Abdul was also long rumored to be in the running to join “X Factor,” but appears to have opted instead to headline her own program, which is being billed as broadcast TV’s first all-ages, all-genre dance series, presenting everything from “ballroom to breakdance, bhangra to ballet and tap to tango.” The acts will compete before a panel of judges, and viewers will vote for their favorites during the semifinals and finals. Abdul will be wading into a fiercely competitive market, with ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” already a ratings juggernaut, followed by the popular “So You Think You Can Dance” on her old network, Fox. There are also dancers on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and a variety of other shows on basic cable networks, including two upcoming CW shows called “One Mass Dance” (about flash-mob-style routines) and “Shed to Wed” (a pre-wedding weight-loss dance-off). Hey Paula

Leaving American Idol certainly hasn’t cramped Paula Abdul ‘s style. She was pap’ed harder than ever leaving a doctor’s appointment in Beverly Hills. When she said she was forever our girl, we guess she knew what she was talking about.

Paula Abdul Is NOT Returning To ‘Idol’

American Idol bosses have shot down reports that former judge Paula Abdul is returning to the hit reality show. Hollywood has been buzzing with the news that Abdul was set to rejoin the judges’ table less than a year after she left. Last August, Abdul announced long-running negotiations had fallen through and she had quit the singing competition show after eight seasons. She has since been replaced by comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. But now with the news that Simon Cowell is leaving after this season to concentrate on the US version of his hit British show The X Factor , rumors began swirling that Abdul had been offered her old job back. A source told US magazine In Touch: “They want Paula back. They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her. People tuned in to see Paula’s wacky antics and her chemistry with Simon. The show is just not as much fun to watch without her.” However, American Idol executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz had denied reports Fox network executives are wooing Abdul back. Frot-Coutaz told the New York Daily News : “There’s no truth to that rumor.”

Paula Abdul to Star in Flash Mob Dance Show?

Paula Abdul may be insane. As in actually not of sound mind. As week ago, we were talking about her hosting Star Search . That sounded like a good fit for the former American Idol judge, but she turned it down. To host a new reality show based around flash mob dancing. Seriously. EW sources confirm that the project, which is being produced by the folks behind The Biggest Loser , would feature Abdul and dancing god Kenny Ortega ( High School Musical, This Is It ) choreographing mass dances in public locations. Try to refrain from laughing out loud if you’re at work now. An NBC insider stresses that a deal is far from done, of course, so she could still flake. We sort of hope for her sake that she does. Paula Abdul may want to reach out and grab some common sense if she is seriously considering this new career “opportunity.” [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com]

Paula Abdul Reportedly In Talks For Flash Mob Dance Show

Show featuring Abdul and Kenny Ortega was pitched to NBC, sources say. By Joel Hanek Paula Abdul Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images While Paula Adbul fans miss seeing her behind the “American Idol” judges’ table this season, there seem to be plenty of industry folks scurrying to find the right way to bring her back to the small screen. The latest possibility, according to Entertainment Weekly, is an NBC dance competition show that would incorporate flash mobs. Flash mobs, for the uninitiated, are typically large, unannounced spectacles in public places that, while choreographed, lead the audience to believe there is an element of randomness and spontaneity for the routine. Unnamed sources told EW that Abdul would team up with fellow renowned choreographer Kenny Ortega , best known as the director of Disney’s “High School Musical” franchise as well as the helmer of Michael Jackson’s final opus, “This Is It.” Variety reports that 3 Ball, the producers of the hit reality-competition show “The Biggest Loser,” are behind the show pitch. Since leaving “American Idol” last year, Abdul has been rumored to have her name attached to many projects, but nothing has been confirmed. After the announcement that Simon Cowell would be leaving “American Idol” after this season to adapt an American version of his hit U.K. show “The X Factor,” many thought that Abdul would be a natural fit to judge the new singing competition. But there has been no official word on that front either. Most recently, reports surfaced last week that ABC had been in talks with Adbul to reboot the famous television franchise “Star Search” — a show on which artists like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears had appeared as children. That story was never confirmed, and the singer allegedly passed on the project. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
