‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake A ‘Big Challenge,’ Director Says

‘I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film,’ Kenny Ortega tells ‘The Insider.’ By Terri Schwartz Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing” Photo: Getty Images Kenny Ortega has been tasked with remaking the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing,” and he knows you aren’t happy about it. The announcement earlier this week was met with seemingly universal backlash, especially in MTV News’ comment section. Commenter lisha.16 lashed out against Hollywood’s continued dependence on remakes, while Valerie Anne Devine pointed out that “Dirty Dancing” is “not broken therefore does not require a makeover.” In an interview with “The Insider,” Ortega said he was initially in the same boat. “Saying yes to this project was a really tough decision for me, and one that I wrestled with for a long time,” said the “This Is It” director, who was a choreographer on the original “Dirty Dancing.” “I had to be won over too.” So far, there’s no script or casting ideas set, just the idea to remake the movie first made famous by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. But “Dirty Dancing” is no stranger to reinvention. The movie inspired a successful Broadway musical as well as the 2004 box-office flop “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.” Ortega said his first step in creating this remake is to not try to top anything the original movie did. “We have a big challenge and a long road ahead of us,” Ortega said. “All I can say is that I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film.” That starts with not trying to find a way to replace Swayze and Grey. “They’re one of a kind, and they deserve to be called that,” he said. Ortega said he has been impressed with “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist Melanie Moore’s skills and told her live on the air that she has a role waiting for her in the film if she wants it. He also said that he would love to find a role for Grey in the remake if she’d want to be part of it. As for who should play male lead Johnny Castle, MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog suggested Ryan Gosling could be a pretty good choice. Ortega is no stranger to fans rebelling against remakes of ’80s dance flicks. He was originally attached to direct the upcoming “Footloose” remake before dropping out because he didn’t like the tone Paramount wanted for their modernized take. It will be interesting to see whether Ortega’s “Dirty Dancing” also gets updated to the present day with current popular dancing or if it maintains the 1960s setting and styles that the original had. Will Michael Jackson Rehearsal Footage Prove or Disprove Conrad Murray Defense Theory?

Video of Michael Jackson’s last two rehearsals for his 2009 “This Is It” tour could be played in court during Dr. Conrad Murray’s manslaughter trial. The L.A. County District Attorney filed a motion today asking the judge to allow the rehearsal footage from June 23-24 to be entered as evidence. The D.A. believes the footage supports the testimony from “This Is It” director Kenny Ortega that Michael was “happy and excited for the future.” Michael Jackson Tour Rehearsal It also opposes the defense’s theory that after the last rehearsal, MJ became desperate and “took desperate measures that caused his own death .” The D.A. also filed a motion to allow limited photos from MJ’s autopsy, claiming the pictures are not gory or gruesome and won’t prejudice a jury.

Chelsea Handler Says She Can’t Handle Bugsy’s Big Black Beefcake-ness

Yeah right, Chelsea “I flirt with every black man” Handler : Like most things in Chelsea Handler’s life, she isn’t taking her current relationship too seriously. Though she’s been linked to 50 Cent since early October, the 35-year-old comedienne seemed surprised when UsMagazine.com asked her about their fledgling romance at Wednesday’s Comcast TCA cocktail reception in Pasadena, Calif. “People still think we’re dating? No! Really?” she asked Us. “He’s sweet, though. I love him, but we’re not dating.” Not that Handler hasn’t done her part to fuel relationship rumors: after 50 Cent was spotted hanging out backstage at her Newark, NJ stand-up show, she tweeted a photo of herself in bed with the 35-year-old rapper in December. “I don’t know if I can handle him, to be honest,” she told Us of their unexpected pairing. “I like to have fun and I’m really trying to not get into anything too serious.” SMH. We All Miss Michael Jackson, But His Momma Is Reaching…

Come on now…really??? According to TMZ reports : The producer/director of Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour is scoffing at Katherine Jackson’s wrongful death suit in which he’s named as a defendant, because he had nothing to do with the drugs or treatment that caused the singer’s death. Kenny Ortega just filed legal docs — obtained by TMZ — asking the court to remove him as a defendant in Katherine’s suit, claiming, “Kenneth Ortega is not alleged to be involved in the medical treatment or administration of drugs that allegedly caused Michael Jackson’s death.” Ortega’s lawyer adds … Kenny never had a contract with Dr. Conrad Murray or with Michael Jackson, nor has he had any official affiliation with AEG. Ortega’s lawyer says, “The naming of Kenneth Ortega as a defendant in this action, without any basis, without any substantive charging allegations against him, is a gross error.” Katherine Jackson, stop it slime. We know you want someone to pay for “killing” your son, but you can’t just go around named arbitrary defendants.
