Watch Meryl Streep’s Friends Campaign For Her Oscar… During Her Kennedy Center Tribute

Last night, during the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast, Meryl Streep ‘s friends feted the honoree in grand fashion. There were video montages introduced, touching anecdotes told, funny memories recounted, musical numbers performed and splits done in her honor –  by  Robert De Niro, Mike Nichols, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline, Anne Hathaway and Tracy Ullman (who co-starred with Streep in Plenty ). It was an epic ode to the actress’s “superhuman” onscreen ability — one, that after ten minutes of increasingly heaping praise, began to feel like one of the most elaborate Oscar campaigns to date. With just two months until the 84th Academy Awards, last night’s Kennedy Center Honors Meryl Streep-fest aired at a perfect time. The actress has just scored her Golden Globe nomination for her highly-anticipated performance in The Iron Lady and is already being called an Oscar frontrunner for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in a project that seems designed entirely for a Lead Actress Oscar win. Where’s Billy Crystal on the New Oscars Poster?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the poster for the 84th Academy Awards, and it’s… nice? I mean, Oscar looks sexy as ever, and all those foggy images of awards-night glories past recall both the champagne-fueled afterparties and the preponderance of white folks who take this hardware home every year. But isn’t something missing? Like, the host? After all that hullabaloo about Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy that the Academy worked to deflect, and after all the lengths that the Board of Governors went to just to replace Murphy with an ultrasafe, ultrastable emcee, and after years of advertising hosts from Chris Rock to Jon Stewart to Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Anne Hathaway and Anne Franco, where is Billy Crystal? If I’m a casual viewer, I’m far likelier to take positive notice of the host than of the centrally positioned reminder that Driving Miss Daisy actually won Best Picture once upon a sad, sad time. Also: Can’t we get some more color in here? Sidney Poitier? Denzel Washington? Mo’Nique? If it has to be Best Picture alums, maybe Poitier and Rod Steiger from In the Heat of the Night ? Even Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner from The Hurt Locker . I’m not sure what this says about the young demographic that the aging Academy claims to covet; I doubt they’re watching Giant and/or The Sound of Music . Or maybe they are! Are you “young” and obsessive-compulsively watching Gone With the Wind on a DVD loop in honor of white, uptight, vaunted Academy legacies? Tell us in the comments! [via Awards Daily ]

Wim Wenders on Pina, 3-D Epiphanies and Until the End of the World at 20

After more than four decades of creative peaks, valleys, experiments and triumphs that have established him as one of the most eclectic filmmakers of his generation, Wim Wenders has ventured into entirely new territory for his new documentary Pina : 3-D. The film’s subject — the late, legendary choreographer (and Wenders’s longtime friend) Pina Bausch — likely wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Watch Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes in Their First Collaboration: Drunk History Christmas

If you worship at the altar of tabloid courtships, you know that Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been linked romantically since working together on Derek Cianfrance’s crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines earlier this year. But thanks to a new Funny or Die video, gossip hounds won’t have to wait until 2012 to see the rumored couple together onscreen. Check out the pair’s first official collaboration below, appropriately titled “Drunk History Christmas.”

Janusz Kaminski on Shooting War Horse, Avoiding 3-D, and Those Spielberg Close-Ups

For most of the last 18 years as Steven Spielberg’s go-to cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski has held one of the sweetest creative gigs in Hollywood. The post has netted the Polish D.P. two Academy Awards (for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan , plus an additional nomination for Amistad ) and credits on some of the most commercially successful films of the last generation, but more than that, it has made Kaminski’s eye the one through which audiences witness Spielberg’s influential vision of the past, present and future. It’s a huge responsibility. It’s also a singular opportunity.

Tracks from ‘The Help,’ ‘The Muppets’ also make list of 39 contenders. Two of Elton John’s “Gnomeo & Juliet” tracks — including his Lady Gaga duet, “Hello Hello” — made the list, along with multiple tracks from “The Muppets.” will.i.am ‘s “Rio” track, “Hot Wings,” Mary J. It’s hard to be obsessed with the Oscars sometimes because they’re often predictable, boring, and tolerant of things like Black Swan , but VINTAGE OSCARS is a whole different story. I could think about the discarded wedding dress Lee Grant wore for her Shampoo victory in ’76 for days. And I have. Even better now, the Academy has released a dress code that legendary costumer Edith Head wrote for the 1968 ceremony. It is cold, direct, and bossy. It is awesome.

Eddie Murphy is prepping to play former Washington, DC mayor Marion Barry in a drama to be directed by Spike Lee . Barry had two runs as mayor of DC from 1979-1991 and from 1995-1999, and made national news when he was caught smoking crack cocaine in 1990. Despite the scandal, Barry was able to get reelected after running with the slogan, “He May Not Be Perfect, But He’s Perfect for D.C.” The forthcoming biopic starring Eddie Murphy will air on HBO, but the exact date has not yet been revealed. It looks just as Oscar-starved as it was a few months ago , though this time around, Warner Bros., producer Scott Rudin and director Stephen Daldry are putting all their eggs in young actor Thomas Horn’s Aspergers-y basket.
