Someone We Actually Like: “Porgy And Bess” Broadway And Opera Star Alicia Hall Moran

We love spreading the word about talented black folks! And it’s even better when the said talent is an exceptional actress and musician with great pipes and an equally fabulous husband. Such is the case with Alicia Hall Moran. Here’s a little info via Ozy.com : If you’d asked Alicia Hall Moran how she was feeling a year ago, fresh off the heels of a Broadway run, the Harlem-based opera singer would sigh and say it was like finally getting “off the treadmill.” It’s an understatement, considering she wasn’t just in the ensemble of Broadway’s Porgy & Bess; she was also the understudy for Audra McDonald’s Bess and performed the role every Wednesday. Juggling eight shows a week, rehearsals for two parts, five-year-old twins, a weeklong commission she was asked to do for the Whitney Museum Biennial and, you know, sleep, left her feeling depleted — and energized at the same time. And it also explains why she has signed back on, heading out in November to star as Bess in the national tour. “Doing theater every day is like pushing a rock up a mountain. There’s the exertion of always moving it forward and also going out there, raw and wondering, ‘How is this going to end?’” she admits. “But with Porgy & Bess, it’s like being in the Olympics. I learned to do a vault on a jacked-up ankle and nail that thing!” But nailing hard-to-execute routines has been the norm for Hall Moran throughout her career. “I’ve departed from the classical mold, which is that you’re assigned music, you learn it and you perform it,” explains the mezzo-soprano. “I’m co-creating the music now, which is highly improvisatory.” That sounds fancy and hard and innovative, but what does it actually mean? It means that there are going to be more creations like the Motown Project, where she recreated the world of Mozart and translated it for a contemporary audience through Motown lyrics. Or new collaborations with her husband, Jason Moran, a jazz pianist and the Kennedy Center artistic director of jazz. Or works with others, like a late September performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center called “Gershwin & Beyond” featuring guitarist Bill Frisell. Clap for Mami… She’s dope. Check out a performance from her below: Pretty amazing right? Facebook Continue reading

Internationally it has grossed $56 million, THR reports . Rick McCallum Bolts from Lucasfilm The Star Wars producer said Saturday via Lucasfilm’s StarWars.com that he is leaving the company to produce a slate of smaller independent films including a Russian pic about the Babi Yar Massacre that Sergei Loznitsa will direct; a film by Laurence Bowen about the boy soldiers of Sierra Leone; and an action drama with Tomas Masin about two brothers who escaped Czechoslovakia during the Cold War while being pursued by thousands of Soviet soldiers, Variety reports . Dustin Hoffman, David Letterman and Led Zeppelin Honored at Kennedy Center The John F. Kennedy Center welcomed eight performing artists to its wall of fame Sunday at a festival Kennedy Center Honors event. Actor Dustin Hoffman, TV host David Letterman, blues singer Buddy Guy, ballerina Natalia Makarova and the rock group Led Zeppelin (John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant) were saluted during the affair’s 35th annual installment attended by the President and Mrs. Obama, Variety reports . Holdovers Solid As Newcomers Bow Tepid in Specialty Box Office Oscar contenders Silver Linings Playbook and Rust and Bone held solid in the specialty realm as they expanded. The overall box office had dreadful debuts from TWC’s Killing Me Softly and LD Entertainment’s The Collection . But Weinstein’s David O. Russell-directed Silver Linings held nicely with a per-theater average of just over $9K as the movie added four cinemas in its third weekend, Deadline reports . Helen Mirren ‘Unsure’ Over Reprising Queen Role Helen Mirren has admitted she felt “very unsure” about reprising her Oscar-winning role as The Queen in an upcoming London play. “I don’t like going back to things,” the 67-year-old said. “I like to go forward.” But she was won over, she went on, by the “extraordinary team of artists who are putting the play together”. The actress was speaking at the European Film Awards in Malta, where she received an honorary award, BBC reports .

Conor Kennedy and Taylor Swift: Totally Dating!

Conor Kennedy may need to be on the lookout for future songs penned in his dishonor… because the 18-year old son of Robert Kennedy Jr. and Mary Kennedy is totally dating Taylor Swift! Consider the evidence: On July 25, Swift and Kennedy were spotted chowing down pizza in Mount Kisco, New York, walking out of the establishment”hand in hand,” according to a People Magazine source. A few days later, they dined with friends in Cape Cod, with Taylor reportedly cozying up to Conor and “smiling a lot,” onlookers say. Ironically, Swift had previously been linked to Patrick Schwarzenegger , a distant relative of Conor’s, after photos captured her hanging out with Arnold’s son during July 4 weekend. But she was actually spending time over that holiday with Kennedy. On December 3, meanwhile, the connections will continue: Swift will be honored by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights due to her commitment to social change, notably her work against bullying and LGBT discrimination. [Photo: WENN.com]

Kerry Kennedy Arrested For DUI

Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter Kerry Kennedy was arrested for DUI in New York for allegedly being under the influence of drugs when slamming into a tractor trailer. N.Y. State Police released a statement saying they received 911 calls around 8:00 a.m. reporting a woman in a 2008 Lexus who was driving in an “erratic manner.” Officers found Kerry’s damaged car nearby, with her behind the wheel. Officers approached the vehicle and determined that Kennedy, brother of RFK Jr. and sister-in-law of the late Mary Kennedy , was under the influence of drugs. Kerry works as the president of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and had been mourning the May death of Mary, her best friend. According to WABC in New York, Kerry Kennedy told officers she had taken an Ambien, a powerful prescription sleeping pill … that would probably do it. The 52-year-old Kennedy, the former wife of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired by drugs. Her spokesman denied she had been impaired. “Kerry Kennedy voluntarily took breathalyzer, blood and urine tests – all of which showed no drugs or alcohol whatsoever in her system,” Ken Sunshine said. “The charges were filed before the test results were available.” [Photo: WENN.com]

Watch Meryl Streep’s Friends Campaign For Her Oscar… During Her Kennedy Center Tribute

Last night, during the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast, Meryl Streep ‘s friends feted the honoree in grand fashion. There were video montages introduced, touching anecdotes told, funny memories recounted, musical numbers performed and splits done in her honor –  by  Robert De Niro, Mike Nichols, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline, Anne Hathaway and Tracy Ullman (who co-starred with Streep in Plenty ). It was an epic ode to the actress’s “superhuman” onscreen ability — one, that after ten minutes of increasingly heaping praise, began to feel like one of the most elaborate Oscar campaigns to date. With just two months until the 84th Academy Awards, last night’s Kennedy Center Honors Meryl Streep-fest aired at a perfect time. The actress has just scored her Golden Globe nomination for her highly-anticipated performance in The Iron Lady and is already being called an Oscar frontrunner for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in a project that seems designed entirely for a Lead Actress Oscar win. Take a look at the 10+ minute CBS campaign below.

No Doubt Delay Album Release

‘There is still more work for us to do,’ the band says in a statement. By Jocelyn Vena No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Considering how long No Doubt fans have been waiting for the release of their next album, it should come as no surprise that they’ll have to wait a little longer. The group took to their official site this week to let fans know it’s going to take a little longer than planned before they drop anything new. “Ideally our new record would be coming out this year but it’s just not ready yet,” the statement reads. “We don’t want to rush this album just to get it out. This collection of songs means everything to us and our only priority right now is to make sure that it’s the best album we can possibly make. There is still more work for us to do. …” The band noted that while no new music will be coming out in 2011, it’s been a big year for them in other ways. “The past twelve months have been eventful; we performed for Paul McCartney and President Obama at the Kennedy Center Honors, three beautiful new No Doubt babies were born, and we’ve recorded in studios all over Los Angeles.” They added at the end of the statement that the delay will actually benefit fans. “We love our fans and are doing this for your ears and want you to know how much we appreciate your patience and support,” they wrote. “There have been some stories circulating about us collaborating with outside producers and artists. Please don’t believe anything you hear unless it comes from us.” The group has been keeping fans up-to-date on the progress of the album through interviews and on Twitter . It will be their first studio release since 2001’s Rock Steady . Related Artists No Doubt

Glenn Beck Told He Can’t Lead Audience In Prayer At Kennedy Center

Conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck was told by officials at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts that he can’t lead his audience in prayer at his August 27 Divine Destiny event. Beck has rented out the facility the night before his “Restoring Honor” celebration at the Lincoln Memorial for “an eye-opening evening…that will help heal your soul.” As Beck relayed to his radio audience Monday, his religious plans during the festivities were a serious point of contention before the powers that be came to their senses (video follows with transcript and commentary): GLENN BECK: They have told people on the steps of the Supreme Court that they cannot pray there. They have told students on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial they can’t sing the National Anthem there. And last week I was told by the Kennedy Center that we could not pray there. We were told by the Kennedy Center in no uncertain terms that we could hold our event there, sure we had a contract. But they weren’t told that we were going to have an opening prayer. The program is has the word divine in it, our divine destiny. We couldn’t pray at the Kennedy Center. So my attorneys came to me and said, Glenn, are you willing to compromise on it? And I said, I sure am. You tell them that not only will I do an opening prayer, I’ll do a closing prayer, and the entire program may be a prayer. In fact, take this down. It is a night of prayer. You’ll see if you are lucky enough to get a ticket to the Kennedy Center, and they are not for sale. You will see in the program how I described it. I described it that way. So they could print that in their program at the Kennedy Center which they insisted on having after they told us we couldn’t pray. I said, let me dictate this one. Friday night I was supposed to have a meeting today at 1:00 with their attorneys and I had already talked to my attorneys. Zero compromise. We asked them, where is that in your I didn’t see that in your rules and regulations. “It’s not written down.” No prayer at a federally funded building. Friday night I think they got a hold of Common Sense. They alerted me Friday night that they will allow prayer to happen on the stage of the Kennedy Center. I told them, thank you so much for your graciousness. I appreciate the scrap from the table. America, our religion and our faith is under attack and whether people care to realize it or not, it is. Ironically as our friends at The Right Scoop noted , prayer isn’t allowed in government buildings, but the current President “can still have a Ramadan dinner at the White House.” That said, Beck informed his readers of this event Wednesday: Glenn Beck’s Divine Destiny is an eye-opening evening at the historic Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C that will help heal your soul. Guided by uplifting music, nationally-known religious figures from all faiths will unite to deliver messages reminiscent to those given during the struggles of America’s earliest days. The event will leave you with a renewed determination to look past the partisan differences and petty problems that fill our airwaves and instead focus our shared values, principles and strong belief that faith can play an essential role in reuniting the country.  Those interested can read more about Restoring Honor here .
