Uum…Okay: Polar Vortex Video Challenges Have People Experimenting In Freezing Weather

Here is the original post:

Source: Wojtek Zagorski / Getty The polar vortex has been quite offensive these past couple of days. As of Thursday, it’s already taken over a number of states in the U.S. with the Midwest being hit the hardest. According to ABC 6 , some states in this area are experiencing temperatures in the negative 30s, and if you add wind chills to the mix, states like Illinois have experienced weather that feels like negative 57 degrees . According to The New York Times ,  eight weather-related deaths have already been recorded in the Midwest while the east coast isn’t that much safer with cities like New York experiencing single digit temperatures. But despite all this, folks will still find a way to capture the madness on camera. You can blame it on snowed-in boredom or you can blame it on plain curiosity. But whatever the reasoning, people are playing in the snow in the most bizarre and hilarious ways. First, a few people are putting their dogs on the line to test the weather. Some pet owners have been letting their canines out into the cold just to find out if they’d be thrilled for a walk. For many, the answer was a hard no. Just let Twitter user @IamNPaterson and her dog tell it… My dog when the #polarvortex arrives in #newjersey “No. Absolutely not.” @njdotcom pic.twitter.com/uUFKWu2BzV — Natalie Paterson (@IamNPaterson) January 30, 2019 Then, there were people who put their scientist hat on to discover the shocking effects of freezing temperatures. One Twitter user posted a video of herself soaking a T-shirt then sticking it outside in the cold. The results were a clothing item that could stand on its own after just a little over an hour outside. It’s no joke out here. One of the most viral videos, however, is a challenge that carried over from previous years. People have been boiling water and throwing it into the freezing air, creating a snow-making affect. Peep the slow motion spectacle below.   According to Wired , because the water is so hot, it has enough energy to transition from liquid to gas quickly. When the hot water is projected into the cold air, a few things happen. First, the hot water is making water vapor thanks to evaporation. Second, the water is breaking into smaller blobs of water as it moves through the air. Both the evaporation and smaller blobs cause the water to cool off quickly. In addition to this, the cold air can’t hold a lot of water vapor (which is why the air is much drier in the winter), so the water vapor doesn’t stay in the air, but it condenses out. Viola. Instant snow. People across social media have been trying their luck at the phenomenon whether it be -10 degrees temperatures or -20 degrees  outside. Whatever the case might be, make sure to stay warm and stay safe. The polar vortex will still disrespect you and your entire video.

Glee Series Finale: Where Are They Now?

The final notes have been sang, the final tears have been shed and the final message has been sent. With  Glee Season 6 Episode 13 , this influential Fox series has come to an end. After going back five years during the opening hour of a moving finale, viewers jumped ahead to 2020, as Glee closed out its impressive run by giving us a look at where various characters ended up once their days in New Directions were truly over. To wit: Kurt and Blaine were happily living in New York City, being totally fabulous and starring at Lincoln Center in the first-ever LGBT take on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Rachel volunteered to serve as the couple’s surrogate… and she also won a Tony Award. In her acceptance speech, Rachel thanked her husband (Jessie St. James), along with Mr. Schuester, telling the latter: “Dreams really do come true.” Mercedes remained very successful, while Sam was happily heading up the New Directions (merely one of four glee clubs at the new-and-improved, arts-based McKinley). He had also found another new girlfriend. Tina and Artie were contentedly coupled up and as cute as ever. Sue was elected for a second term as Jeb Bush’s Vice President, with Becky working as a Secret Service agent and with many track suits bearing the letters VPOTUS.  Sue returned to McKinley to close out the finale in order to dedicate the Finn Hudson Auditorium and to deliver an emotional speech about how she once thought glee club was silly. However: “What I finally realized [is] it takes a lot of bravery to look around you and see the world not as it is, but as it should be: A world where the quarterback becomes best friends with the gay kid, and the girl with the big nose ends up on Broadway. Glee is about imagining a world like that and finding the courage to open up your heart and sing about it. That’s what glee club is. And for the longest time I thought that was silly. And now I think it’s just about the bravest thing that anyone can do.” 19 Greatest Glee Performances in History 1. Don’t Stop Believing It was the first and it was the best. 19 Greatest Glee Performances in Show History: We’ll Never Stop Believing!

It’s no longer a top-rated show. In fact, it’s one of the least-watched shows on all of television. But there was a time, not that long ago, when Glee was on top of the pop culture universe. So, with Glee Season 6 coming to an end this Friday and with it, of course, the entire series, now feels like a proper time to pay homage to a truly ground-breaking program. 19 Greatest Glee Performances in History 1. Don’t Stop Believing It was the first and it was the best. Glee took viewers on a fun journey with the performance that concluded its perfect series premiere. 2. Up Next: ” 19 Greatest Glee Performances in History .” We’ll be redirecting you shortly… Glee made singing cool. It made being a nerd acceptable. It often veered too far into the world of cheesy Public Service Announcements, especially in its later years, but no one can debate the show’s originality. It aimed to be more than just a TV show, trying to send messages on a weekly basis about drugs, drinking, homosexuality, bullying and many other important topics. We’ll take that any day over the uncreative, borderline racist nonsense of abysmal sitcoms such as 2 Broke Girls. And Glee also dealt with a real-life tragedy when Cory Monteith died , providing the series with a certain tragic gravitas as it nears its conclusion. Look for the musical comedy to pay homage to the late star on its series finale this Friday. We salute you, Glee stars and Glee music , for giving television something it has never seen before – and we honor you via the above photo gallery. Which of these 19 Glee performances was your favorite?

NASA Curiosity Rover Lands Safely on Mars

We now pause from reporting on Ryan Lochte’s abs and Michael Phelps’ girlfriend Megan Rossee to bring you some important news that should make any American proud: Curiosity, NASA’s long-touted plutonium-powered rover, made a picture perfect landing on Mars today and etched its name in space exploration history. Earlier Monday, the agency released a photograph taken by its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter showing the rover still encased in the descent capsule. Shortly after, it touched down on the planet’s surface. During the early hours of the morning, the rover, about the size of a small car, was lowered at the end of 25-foot-long cables into a Martian crater. Over the years, NASA’s orbiter taken about 120 photographs of the crater in preparation for the rover, with left Earth more than eight months ago. “But I really think this is the coolest one,” Sarah Milkovich, a NASA scientist who works with the orbiter camera, said during a news conference. “What’s amazing about it is the miracle of this engineering ,” said John P. Grotzinger, the scientist who spearheaded the groundbreaking project. The rover ushers in a new era of exploration that could turn up evidence that Mars once boasted the ingredients for life – or might even still. NASA and administration officials were also quick to laud the mission amid criticism that the agency has become a bureaucracy long past its prime. “If anybody has been harboring doubts about the status of U.S. leadership in space,“ John P. Holdren, the president’s science adviser, said. “There’s a one-ton, automobile-size piece of American ingenuity, and it’s sitting on the surface of Mars right now.” One can only imagine what wonders it will discover on the red planet. U-S-A! U-S-A!

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue: Bane Explained!

MTV News walks you through the garbled dialogue and intricate plot of the Batman teaser. By Kevin P. Sullivan Bane in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Even two weeks after “The Dark Knight Rises” prologue debuted before select IMAX showings of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” everyone who saw it can’t seem to stop talking about Bane and what he says — or at least what people thought he said. Ever since the preview’s premiere, there has been talk of tweaking audio levels and lowering background noise in order to make Bane more intelligible. Just Tuesday, a rumor circulated that Warner Bros. had provided IMAX projectionists with an adjusted soundtrack for the prologue . Warner Bros. denied the claim, but talk of changes persists. If you’ve already seen the prologue, adjusting audio levels now won’t help you until the July release of the finished film, so we’ve gone over the footage and decoded each story element and every line of Bane’s dialogue for you. ( Major spoilers ahead! ) The Setup Most of the confusion about what’s going on starts before we even see Bane. We jump right into the story without much explanation of what’s going on. “Leaked” CIA documents, used as part of a viral campaign, fill in some of the blanks. Dr. Pavel, a missing Russian nuclear physicist, seeks asylum in the United States with the help of the CIA. Pavel believes he is in immediate danger and goes into hiding. A group of mercenaries find him and negotiate with the CIA to deliver the scientist over to them safely, at the cost of $3 million. The prologue begins with that exchange. Bane The mercenaries bring along three unexpected guests to the party with the CIA. The leader of the soldiers informs the head agent that the men work for Bane. Eager to learn more about the masked man, the CIA agent brings the three men onto the airplane but only promises safe passage to the one who talks the most. Bane then speaks his first line as the agent threatens his men. “Or perhaps he’s wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.” Bane and the agent exchange some words, during which we get some background on his character. His mask keeps him from experiencing severe pain caused by a yet-unknown ailment. It also was what made people pay attention to Bane in the first place. “No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.” The Plan From here, we see Bane’s master plan play out. A large plane hooks onto the smaller one flown by the CIA and drags it into a nosedive. There’s a small fight inside, but Bane and his men win handily. They lower a dead body in a bag into the plane and perform a transfusion with Dr. Pavel, so when the wreckage is found, the DNA matches the missing doctor. As the group prepares to exit, Bane informs one of his younger partners in crime that he must stay behind in order to avoid suspicion. When the man asks Bane if they have started a fire, he replies with the now-famous line: “The fire rises.” Pretty straightforward, right?
