5 Great Performances Oscar is Bound to Overlook in 2010

If you’ve been keeping up with the Oscar Index, you’ll know that 2010 is like pretty much any other year in the history of awards-season: A handful of talent breaks out early, shifts position throughout the fall, then settles into a mostly predictable nominee bracket by the end of January. It used to annoy me, but the reality is that the system Hollywood wants is the system Hollywood gets. But at least we can dream, no?

Discuss: This Man is Actually Co-Hosting the Oscars

In all sincerity, I am excited about James Franco co-hosting the Oscars with Anne Hathaway. I like him, I like her, and surely we can all agree is that the show will either rock in completely fresh, unprecedented ways, or it will explode in a spectacular, Chernobyl-esque ball of radioactive flame and debris, polluting its Hollywood environs for decades to come. Regardless, we’re going to have ourselves a memory! That said, I’m not sure on which scenario I’d bet after seeing Franco’s bit in the awards-season actor’s roundtable after the jump. Help?

Can James Franco and Anne Hathaway Save the Oscars for Generation Y?

The stages of reaction to the news that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the Academy Awards next year are turning over at a record pace. There was initial shock at the randomness of their selection; the acceptance that maybe the pair would make beautiful — if awkward — music together; and now, the rationalizations for putting them on the Kodak Theater stage in the first place. “This year’s telecast isn’t just about ‘getting to the youth’ — its whole theme is going to reflect on this history of movies through the perspective of a young person experiencing the movies for the first time,” an insider told Vulture . Which is a fancy way of saying it’s about getting to the youth.

Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis Support Co-Star James Franco As Oscar Host

‘They’re going to do a great job,’ Kunis says of Franco and co-host Anne Hathaway. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Natalie Portman at the 2010 Gotham Awards Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images News broke Monday morning that Anne Hathaway and James Franco had been tapped to host the 83rd annual Academy Awards , but those reports never reached two of Franco’s co-stars. That evening, at the red-carpet premiere for “Black Swan” in New York, MTV News asked Natalie Portman, who stars alongside Franco in the upcoming comedy “Your Highness,” what she thought of the hosting news. “I didn’t hear about that!” she told us. “That’s awesome. That’s really cool.” Earlier in the day, Franco’s “Date Night” co-star Mila Kunis (who also happens to star with Portman in “Black Swan”) stopped by the MTV Newsroom, and when we asked for her thoughts on the Oscar development, she too confessed she hadn’t heard. “What? That’s awesome,” she said. “I think they’re going to do a great job.” Both women will likely be on hand for the festivities, as “Black Swan” is a front-runner to nab nominations in a slew of categories, from Best Picture to Best Actress for Portman. There’s even an outside chance Kunis could reel in a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Franco, meanwhile, has been a leading contender for an acting nod based on his turn as a trapped hiker in “127 Hours.” How his hosting duties will affect his chance of receiving a nomination and then winning the award is anyone’s guess. All Portman knows is that with Franco and Hathaway emceeing the ceremony, the 83rd Oscars should be a whole lot more entertaining than past versions of the show. “That’ll be more fun to watch than usual,” she said. Check out everything we’ve got on “Black Swan.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Why Irvin Kershner Mattered

Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87. He leaves behind some recognizable films ( The Flim Flam Man with George C. Scott; Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and several sequels of various prominence ( The Return of a Man Called Horse , Robocop II and the renegade James Bond film Never Say Never Again ), never afraid to explore and extend the story of someone else’s work. So, really, it’s not a huge surprise in hindsight that he accepted the challenge of The Empire Strikes Back , the 1980 effort continuing the story that George Lucas started three years earlier with Star Wars . But could anybody have expected Kershner to knock this particular sequel out of the f*cking park?

20 Rejected Combinations that Were Considered to Host the Oscars in 2011

By now you’ve had a few hours to digest the news that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the Academy Awards next year , something that is likely a dream come true for Twentieth Century Fox (perhaps Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis can do an interpretive dance to commemorate the ten Best Picture nominees, too!). Anne Hathaway and James Franco to Host Academy Awards?

If Anne Hathaway wears what she donned for a recent EW photo shoot at next year’s Academy Awards, we think the following news is nothing short of exhilarating: According to Deadline Hollywood, Hathaway and James Franco are near-locks to host the 2011 Oscars. Darren Aronofsky on Wolverine: ‘I’m Being Hired to Do What I Do’

After a week spent climbing back into Oscar contention for Black Swan , the last thing Darren Aronofsky can afford right now is to backslide into the swirling pit of hype and speculation around his big comic-book coming-out party The Wolverine . So, with trademark equanimity and cool, the filmmaker appears in a new video assuring skeptics that not only has he not sold out, but he’s just making a movie like any of his others. It just happens to have a mutant hero.

Avan Jogia: Miley’s New Man?

Has Miley Cyrus found a new young man? Sources tell Hollywood Life that Avan Jogia has been spotted out on multiple occasions with the singer, saying the two have been “hanging and getting closer,” possibly contributing to the reasons why Miley broke up with Liam Hemsworth for the 29th time a few weeks ago. Rumored, quasi new couple alert: Avan Jogia and Miley Cyrus. Jogia appeared on the SyFy series Caprica and is best known for his role on the Nickelodeon show Victorious . Although an insider says Cyrus “wants to be officially single for her birthday [November 23] and just have fun with whomever she hangs out with,” witnesses spotted her and Jogia on at least two separate occasions in October: They had lunch on the 28th. They attended a Halloween party together a few days later. Avan also gave an interview to Tiger Beat about the alleged relationship and said: “We’re hanging out, but I don’t really have to much to say about that.” Fair enough. With Miley’s busy schedule – she recently performed in Europe and will return to the States this Sunday for the American Music Awards – it’s difficult for anyone to lock her down these days.
