Oscar Index: When SAG Things Happen to Good Actors

Three months down, one to go as Movieline’s redoubtable Oscar Index tracks the cutthroat dynamics, strategies, tea-leaf analyses and total flukes leading up to the 83rd Academy Award nominations. This week’s SAG Award nominations and continued critics prizes led to an blippy array of movements, with most occurring (perhaps obviously) in the increasingly competitive actors categories. Let’s break it down.

248 Movies Eligible for Best Film Oscar, Some Will Have Nudity

We won’t have the list of the ten actual nominees for a while yet, but on Monday the Academy announced that a total of 248 films are eligible to win the 2010 Best Picture Oscar. That’s down from 274 last year and 281 in 2008. Last year, the first year to feature ten Best Picture nominees, only two of the films nominated ( A Serious Man and Up in the Air ) had nudity. And of the five nominees in 2008, two also had nudity— The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button . This year, there are two odds-on favorites for the nominations that contain nudity worth talking about. The first is the George Clooney spy thriller The American . Just one minute into the movie, we get a look at Irina Bj

When the Academy Award nominations are announced next month, it is expected that Black Swan , The Fighter , True Grit and The Kids Are All Right will be among the most recognized films. Just not in the Best Original Score category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences music branch has ruled that all four Oscar contenders are ineligible for the award.

3 Underdogs Worth Rooting for in the Oscar Race for Best Original Song

Oscar’s “Best Original Song” category is unusually thrilling; you might not remember the nominated tunes (or even the movies), but you cheer when Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need to Wake Up” defeats three Dreamgirls contributions, and you groan when Phil Collins’s monkey love medley from Tarzan beats Aimee Mann’s “Save Me” from Magnolia . This time, Movieline is offering to help the academy by drawing attention to three underdogs who deserve more recognition than, say, anything from the Burlesque or Country Strong soundtracks.

Justin Bieber’s ‘Karate Kid’ Song Is Eligible For An Oscar

‘Never Say Never’ joins tunes by Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera in the running for Original Song category. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Justin Bieber set tweenage hearts aflutter when he teamed with Jaden Smith to record “Never Say Never,” the theme to Smith’s “Karate Kid” reboot. And now, he’s hoping to do the same for Oscar voters. Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the governing body of the Academy Awards — released its list of the 41 songs eligible for the Original Song category at the 83rd annual awards, and Bieber made the cut. “Never Say Never” is in the running against the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Coming Home” and “Me and Tennessee” (both from her upcoming “Country Strong” film) and a trio of songs from Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque.” Though Bieber made the eligibility list, the tune’s nomination is no surefire bet: Movie clips featuring each song will be screened for voting members of the Academy’s Music Branch on January 6, and it will be up to them to select the field of nominees. Nominations will be announced on January 25 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. According to the Academy, in order for a work to be deemed eligible for the Original Song category, it must “consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film,” and “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film, or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Bieber and Smith’s song is played over the end credits of “The Karate Kid.” The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 27. 8 Milestones in the Evolution of Owen Wilson

In James L. Brooks’s new romantic comedy How Do You Know , Owen Wilson co-stars as a loopy, commitment-phobic major league pitcher who romances Reese Witherspoon’s character (to the best of his ability) during a low point in her career. How did Wilson get to a point in his career where he is acting opposite Oscar winners (Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson) in an Academy Award-decorated scribe’s script? Movieline charts the eight roles that lead Owen Wilson to this point.

Sandra Bullock, Oprah Winfrey Among 2011 Oscar Present

Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges also on the newly announced list of celebrities who will hand out trophies at the big event. By Jocelyn Vena Sandra Bullock Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Sandra Bullock took home a Best Actress trophy at the 2010 Oscars for her acclaimed turn in “The Blind Side,” and now the star will be on hand to present an award at next year’s big event when it takes place on February 27. Oscar nominee Oprah Winfrey and Oscar winners Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Marisa Tomei also are part of the list of 2011 Academy Awards presenters that the show’s producers released on Monday. More Oscar presenters are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, while the nominees will be announced on January 25. Meanwhile, the nominees for the Golden Globes were revealed on Tuesday, with films like “The Social Network” and “Tangled” getting nods. Oscar night will be hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco , with the latter actor also figuring to play an even more prominent part in the ceremony. The 32-year-old is considered a lock to nab a Best Actor nomination for his turn as a trapped hiker in “127 Hours,” the Danny Boyle-directed drama that’s also expected to compete for Best Picture honors. The 28-year-old Hathaway, meanwhile, remains a long shot in the Best Actress category for her role in “Love & Other Drugs,” which received mixed reviews and reeled in just $14 million over the extended Thanksgiving holiday. Hiring Franco and Hathaway as hosts certainly marks a strategic turn by the Academy, which has long been accused of being out of touch with the young pop-culture mainstream. A quick scan of Oscar history shows that, over the last two decades, no previous host has been younger than 40 when emceeing the show. Most recently, 64-year-old Steve Martin and 51-year-old Alec Baldwin assumed co-hosting duties, notching the event’s best ratings in five years. The 83rd Academy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on ABC. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Sandra Bullock
