Movieline Translates Casey Affleck’s Confession That I’m Still Here is Fake

Gasp! In what could only be described as predictable, Casey Affleck has admitted that the Joaquin Phoenix “documentary,” I’m Still Here , is fake. The director spoke with the New York Times and confirmed that everything from Phoenix’s appearance with David Letterman to the childhood home movies that are shown at the beginning of the film was planned, staged and carefully edited to create the most unsettling movie possible . Ahead Movieline dives into Affleck’s confession and tries to parse out what he’s really trying to say.

John Cameron Mitchell on Rabbit Hole, Nicole Kidman’s Face and How to Share Power on the Set

It was just a matter of time before the Nicole Kidman/Aaron Eckhart drama Rabbit Hole found a buyer up in Toronto, and now that Lionsgate has staked its claim , the Oscar race is reportedly next. It’s strikingly new territory for John Cameron Mitchell, the writer-director best known for the cult-classic fringe musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the sexually explicit ensemble dramedy Shortbus . Here, directing David Lindsay-Abaire’s adaptation of his own celebrated play, Mitchell settles admirably into a suburban idyll riven by grief, guilt, frigidity and dark humor eight months after the accidental death of Becca (Kidman) and Howie’s (Eckhart) young son. And then there was the year of editing.

9 First Impressions of Nicole Kidman’s Oscar-Ready TIFF Drama Rabbit Hole

I don’t know where these rumors start, but no sooner had Rabbit Hole concluded its Toronto Film Festival premiere Monday night than the talk had begun: Is John Cameron Mitchell’s adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play — featuring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as an affluent married couple grappling with the accidental death of their 4-year-old son — worth adding to the 2010 Oscar shortlist? Honestly, I think it has more immediate concerns. A quick survey of first impressions follows the jump.

Snoop Dogg, Kid Cudi Join Forces For ‘That Tree’ Video

Dressed like Cheech and Chong, the rappers get goofy in their ode to evergreens. By James Montgomery Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi in “That Tree” Photo: Capitol Records Great minds think alike. So, when Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi — two men who share an affinity for, shall we say, herbal remedies — get together on a track called “That Tree,” it’s a pretty safe bet neither of them were thinking about conifers. If they were thinking at all. “Tree,” a new cut off the reissue of Snoop’s Malice in Wonderland album, isn’t about forestry at all. It’s a classic stoner jam, a light ‘n breezy ode to the sticky green stuff, featuring a hazy, loping beat courtesy of Diplo. The accompanying just-released video is appropriately laconic and bedheaded. Directed by Erick Peyton, the clip for “That Tree” is basically a four-minute stoner comedy, featuring brightly colored, slightly goofy set pieces like dancing two-dimensional trees, women dressed as lumberjacks and a big, shiny sun. You know, the kind of stuff that looks like it was lifted from some smoked-out dude’s dreams. It’s a sly interpretation, made even more impressive when you realize that Snoop and Cudi are actually dressed like Cheech and Chong, circa “Up in Smoke” (no word on if their van is made entirely of weed). And, much like all great stoner comedies, there’s (sort of) a plotline involving the accidental ingestion of pot, a misplaced vehicle and a deer. Or something like that. These things tend to make more sense when you’re baked. The video is also amazing because it’s the kind of thing you usually don’t see from Snoop: It’s goofy and good-natured. In the past, even when he was being positively ridiculous (like, for example, his VHS-ified video for “Sensual Seduction”), there was a snarl to his performances, a bit of the braggadocio. In “Trees,” he seems content to just grin and watch the world drift by. And he looks like he’s having a blast doing it. And, really, who can blame him? Never underestimate the power of the trees, after all. Related Videos Snoop Dogg’s ‘That Tree’ Video Premieres Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi

Cops Seek Missing Meds in Brittany Murphy Case

Brittany Murphy had a lot of drugs in her system when she died in December. Her death has been ruled an accident, but several questions about it linger. The actress obtained a prescription for 120 hydrocodone (Vicodin) pills 11 days before her death, but on the day she died, there were only 11 pills left. Suspicious, no? Moreover, the L.A. County Coroner’s Office cannot locate the doctor who prescribed the pills and are currently on the hunt to find him. According to the Coroner’s report, the medication prescribed specifically to the fallen star were supposed to be taken a maximum of four times a day. But since 109 of the pills were missing from the bottle when she died, only 44 should have been gone if Brittany had maxed out on the prescription. R.I.P. The late Brittany Murphy last year. [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] Brittany’s husband, Simon Monjack, says he is vindicated by the accidental death findings, but officials want to know why so many pills were prescribed at all. A member of the Coroner’s Office recently went to Simon Monjack to assist them in locating the doctor who prescribed the meds, but he was not any help. The cause of Murphy’s death is listed as “accidental” – the result of pneumonia, prescription and over-the-counter drugs – but is still far from a closed case.
