Michael Douglas Declares: I’ve Beaten Cancer!

Following what he describes as a “wild six-month ride,” Michael Douglas delivered wonderful news to Matt Lauer this week: his tumor is gone! The veteran actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in August. He underwent weeks of radiation and chemotherapy and tells Lauer, in an interview that will air tomorrow morning, “the tumor is gone.” “The odds are, with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I’ve got it beat,” says the actor. Douglas will still have to see the doctor on a monthly basis, but says his appetite is back and he’s gradually gaining the weight he lost during his illness. What has he learned/experienced? “All of a sudden the affection from my family, from my friends, and from my fans hit me at a much deeper level than I would have ever imagined before. And it gave me a really new appreciation of just how valuable, how precious good friends are and family.”

Now comes some new details about the couple’s split. So, who called off the relationship? “Jake reached out to her and started all of this, but now he’s not acting as interested,” a source explained to UsMagazine.com about the breakup, which reportedly occurred right before New Year’s. “He said he wasn’t feeling it anymore and was uncomfortable with all the attention they got. Taylor is really upset. We told her not to move so fast with this, but she didn’t listen.” The Gyllenhaal source added that all the public speculation about the duo didn’t help. “Jake cares about her, but [the publicity] was a lot for him,” the source said. “He wants to keep his private life private, and that’s hard to do dating Taylor.” People.com reports that the pair celebrated New Year’s separately. Swift was at home in Nashville at a party, while Gyllenhaal was in New York City at a party for the musical “Fela!” and getting dinner with his mom at the Spotted Pig. According to the site, Swift and Gyllenhaal were last spotted together in Los Angeles on December 9. Although they spent Thanksgiving together, Swift and Gyllenhaal were apart during Christmas. Swift was spotted with her mom and brother getting some sun in Turks and Caicos during the holiday. E! News reports that Swift will be attending the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday (January 5) and is focusing on work. According to People, Gyllenhaal and Swift have not been together for quite some time. “They’re over,” a source told the mag about the short-lived relationship. “It ended last month.” Gyllenhaal and Swift started the rumor mill churning with whispers of their romance back in October, when they both showed up to support pal Emma Stone when she hosted “Saturday Night Live.” After that, the lovebirds were spotted together in Brooklyn then laughing and getting ice cream sundaes in Big Sur, California. Things heated up in the media when reports surfaced that Gyllenhaal had allegedly dropped $150,000 to fly swift to the U.K. to hang out with him while he promoted “Love & Other Drugs.” Then, at Thanksgiving, “Jaylor” reportedly spent the holiday with Gyllenhaal’s sister, Maggie, and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard. Despite all the reports of the pair having been seen together, taking trips, etc., neither Swift nor Gyllenhaal ever commented on the supposed romance. The most we got from the country star was that her rumored boyfriend’s latest movie “Love & Other Drugs” was “good.” “I write in great detail about my personal life,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “But I don’t talk about it.” If “Swiftenhaal” are indeed no more, perhaps the actor and pop star are the first victims of the predicted fallout from “mistletoe syndrome,” a phenomenon that occurs from roughly November through February, often brought on by the warm fuzzy feelings surrounding the holidays.
